There are plenty of abused and disaffected people in western society who blame the opposite sex for their plight. There are also many that don't. I think the way to move forward is not to get sucked into the battle of the sexes, racism, sectarian division route and champion what we have in common instead. Failure to do this will only bring on greater fragmentation of our society
It's not rocket science, you're right. Ryorry was clearly suggesting that a male judge would be more likely to hand out a more lenient sentence. What would be a fair punishment for the idiot Rubiales in this instance? 2.5 years in prison as a prosecution lawyer supporting Jenni Hermoso was demanding? How much more for rape, paedophilia, murder? How much time for a pinched bum or a sexist comment? Would it be the same for either sex in both single sex and heterosexual relationships? We need to determine these things so people know where they stand in this rapidly changing and multi-cultural society
My view is shaped by the women close to me in my life - my daughter, my wife and my sisters actually. My wife and daughter both speak good Spanish which means they also have information that is specific to this case.

I’m not sure why you’re following this line. It’s well known that women are by far more likely to be the victim of harassment, abuse, harm or murder by men. Of course that will affect how this guy’s actions are perceived by the public (but not the jury or judge; hopefully they were purely following due process and the law).

Yes. I wasn't criticising your use of the term, for clarity.

Sometimes legal terms are not always helpful in allowing the layperson to get what is going on.

An example of this: if, in the UK, a person exposes themself to members of the public, then that is classed as 'outraging public decency'. There is no mention in the legal charges of the fact that the crime was sexual in nature. It is a minor crime, and often carries no custodial sentence. Fair enough. Not here to debate that one. However, it doesn't give the person on the street a good context in which to form anopinion. Just an example of what I'm trying to convey. 😊

Yep, fair point.

Well said.

I'm afraid the shock, anger and depression I felt from some of the responses on the thread are still swamping my ability to articulate everything I'm feeling and thinking about the topic as well as I'd like. Some females I see speaking in public like yourself do it extremely well on behalf of us; but I suspect for every one of you, there are several more like me who don't feel up to it, perhaps even more who just stay silent as I did about an experience I had in my 20s until I mentioned it for the first time in a similar discussion on here a few months ago.

It doesn't help when some on here then double down & just ride roughshod over what's been said. I wouldn't dream of disagreeing with a young man in an inner-city who's living in fear of knife-crime, e.g., because I wouldn't have had any of his experiences so it'd be literally ignorant, as well as thoroughly arrogant of me to ignore, gloss over or dispute his experiences of living in the culture he's in.

Whilst I appreciate your kind words, please don't diminish your contribution to this topic. I may be wrong, but you appear to be the only woman poster that I know that has tried to contribute until page 4. It's not easy being in the minority and trying to engage meaningfully and effectively when you are multitasking to this extent. Having said that, I'm very consoled by how many men here are sympathetic, alert, and proactive in protecting their own female friends and family, and trying to understand the narrative. It warms the heart!

I know you have also been the victim of very unpleasant experiences down to certain men's abuse of power, and you are very brave to even allude to it, let alone give any detail. I paid for years of therapy to work through a lot of my experiences and that has helped me to be able to talk about them without shame, but that by no means 'trumps' the experiences of those who can't or don't want to speak out.

Thank you, really appreciate all of that.

Yes, being in a minority of one (as far as I knew, understandably some don't want to reveal gender) certainly did make it harder - external pressure + internal turmoil of all those feelings making for a log-jam which could only get out via ! And on top of that, the multitude of nonsense in numerous posts from one individual incorporating repetitive 'both-sides'ing & the cracker of it apparently being "odd" that I "found a haven on a male dominated football forum".. Although several guys have been very supportive both directly in posts & indirectly through voting, which as you say is greatly encouraging.

Glad you got that therapy, sounds a good move. Something I might look at if circumstances permit later this year. It's my late mother's experiences too that are getting me angry. I remember from when I was young (maybe around 10) her quite frequently being upset at a couple of men leching at & trying to kiss her, one an employee of my late father which made things particularly difficult for her obviously; & one half of a married couple in their circle of friends.

BTW, just been watching on 'Rewind' (c95 fv) an episode of 'Drop the Dead Donkey', one of the few comedies which has aged well. Theme was sexual harrassment. It was produced & first shown in 1993 ...

Episode also available to stream for free on YouTube.

I honestly think it is mad that this has ended up as a trial covered all over the world.

What he did was offensive and stupid, but if he'd held his hand up and properly apologised at the time, rather than doubling down and trying to bring the weight if the Spanish FA behind him, then that would probably have been that.

Instead, it became much bigger than the incident itself, and here we are.

Except that you are missing the national context. In Spain misogyny is a real problem but one which they are starting to face up to. It was important that his actions were highlighted for what they were.
