Standing desks? 12:06 - Feb 26 with 1715 viewsThisIsMyUsername

Any suggestions please? Since starting a new remote job at the start of the year where I am spending a lot of time hunched over my dining table looking at my laptop, I am developing pain in the neck.

I believe I could benefit from using a standing desk. The 'problem' is I am 6'2, as well as standing desks seeming to be pretty expensive.

Any suggestions for the cheapest possible option which will work for a relatively tall person?

Thanks in advance.

I've just put a small table on top of my dining table. I'm still looking down but perhaps not as much. I will do this for now.

You might be better off with a decent office chair unless you specifically want to stand.

Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is that with the height of my table I'd still be looking down significantly.

I think standing could be the way forward, particularly as I'm not working full-time hours so it's not like I'd be spending 7-8 hours a day standing there. Perhaps a max of 5 or 6.

With out sounding like an utter anorak, the company still has a duty of care to ensure you have a suitable working environment. Doesn't automatically mean they will buy the equipment, but they may be sympathetic??

Standing desk seem to have mixed reviews on effectiveness, but it is very much an individual requirement. Breaks from the screen are still recommended for either sitting or standing at your workstation.

I got offered one after I bust my back, but I actually found it easier to make my own wooden box to plonk the screen/laptop on.

Manager thought I was a bit strange for not taking the offer of the electric desk, but going to Wickes, then building it, was the highlight of my week.

Thanks, Deano. This is self-employed work (for a particular company) so I don't know if that still applies and whether they would provide any kit (doubt it), but I will double check!

Very individual isn't it as you say. I also get 'bored' quicker when sitting down I think vs if I feel like I can move around a bit more freely. I'm also conscious about things like my hip flexor muscles getting tight from lots of sitting so it would prevent that too.

I do go for regular screen breaks out in the fresh air!

Great shout. I could put one of those on top of my new and current table upon a table configuration.

I use one of these. They are brilliant!

So I can vary the day, sitting or standing.

Yep mine is similar, spring loaded so you can easily adjust it to the right height.

Getting out of the house is the main one for me. The dogs are the key to that… they let me know when it’s time to get away from the screens!

I've got one from Ikea, think it's called Bekkant or something similar, has an electric motor to elevate. Been pretty good for the past 8 years. Would recommend. I stand in the mornings then sit in the afternoon.

Some of the prices for the items available!

I think I'll get a laptop stand for £20 on Amazon and stick it on top of the two tables.

So important. We aren't designed to be sitting at a desk all day without moving.

I’m 6ft5 and have had this for a while. Having a standing desk is worth £180.

Listen to your body. With all the **** there is to buy in the world, why cheap out on an investment in your health. I'm 6'2 as well. You spend, what, 8h of your day, a third of your day at a desk. What are you going to use more, that has a such a benefit.

As someone else said, a decent chair will help too. One that is built for a taller person.

Good luck

It's not what you're after but I treated myself to a Secret Labs Magnus desk. It's ridiculously expensive, yes but it's top quality and I can go from sitting to standing at the tap of 1 button. I would wholly recommend. I'm 6'1

I sit/stand at this desk for a minimum of 8 hours a day and often more so why not make it comfortable and pleasant. They do hold their value too so future sale will recoup some cost but I don't see myself getting rid.

Previous tenant of mine. who like the OP is 6’2” and wfh, had neck/back issues and got his employer, a Uni, to pay and install (a major thing apparently) it. He loved it and said he couldn’t work without it. Don’t know the make, sorry, but it was very expensive.
