Maybe he's taking the word 'set' very literally.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

His decision to allow Philogene to mark Maguire with live with me for a long time.

Maguire was the only likely Man Utd player to score from a set piece and was allowed to walk down the middle and have a free hit.

Yes, sack him. Three set pieces conceded tonight. Half our defenders don't even watch the ball. They just grapple and block. I played county league, and even we were coached better than that.
1. One hand on the player you're marking so you know where they are (don't push or give a pen),
2. watch the ball,
3. ATTACK IT!

We only did #1 tonight. Players need to take some of the blame. A certain amount of #3 depends on you actually giving a sh!t, and putting your body on the line, which we lacked the heart to tonight.

Our strongest defender should surely be on him at all times at set pieces

We lost him a number of times and paid for it

What's more incredible was we had conceded the second fewest goals from set pieces up until today!

Should be sacked for that alone.

Defending set pieces has been one of our few strong points this season. Obviously a bad night on that score though, certainly will be an inquest!

I think we lost pretty much every first contact in our own box tonight. Sorry, Morsy won one actually and put it in his own net.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was Cajuste who was assigned to mark Maguire. Early in the first half, Cajuste lost Maguire and Palmer made a smart save. Second half corner, we were not so lucky!

It was Philogene for the third goal which you have to say is madness

Again, I maybe mistaken, but watch it back, Cajuste is his marker, Philogene, just happened to be the player who was eventually closest to Maguire, but it wasn't his man.

Then the best aerial defender who was playing, should have been assigned the responsibility, not the central midfielder, who has shown nothing in aerial defensive prowess.

today, undoubtedly. but is it also true that before today only brentford were better than us at defending set pieces?

what worries me more is our lack of goals from attacking set plays, rarely look threatening.

Just watched the highlights again and it was still Cajuste marking Maguire. Maguire ran off him and then Philogene waited for the ball to come and didn’t attack it so Maguire knocking. Both equally culpable.

I sit in the West stand near the dugouts and every time we have a set piece against us, a free kick or a corner, Kieron moves out of the way and up pops our set piece coach from his comfy dugout chair.

He then stands in the technical area whistling, shouting and pointing to all our players as to where they should be standing or who they should be marking etc. He bloody well annoys me and others who sit near me.
Then as soon as the set piece is over, he goes back to his comfy chair and Kieron is then back in charge.

Either the players ignore him or he's not very good at his job as we are not that good at defending set pieces.

Another reason he bloody annoys me is, he is so damn tall he blocks the view of the fans behind and to the side of him. You look at the dug out next time a corner or set piece is given against us and you will see him stand up then sit down again like a bloody jack in the box

Yes, I think you're correct. Surely should have been a central defender instead of Cajuste though. Not sure what Philogene was assigned to do, stand around doing nothing by the looks of it.

Until last night we’d conceded 3 goals from set pieces all season.

So I’d suggest we are good at defending them, last night was a bad off night on that front.

Our attacking set pieces however, deary me.

As many others have said, we were one of the best in the league at set pieces before last night, so basically you're just making up nonsense because he obscures your view occasionally.

Stop bringing facts into it.

One of the galling things about not being good enough this season is people fixating on errors and extrapolating them to enormous size.

Does anyone know who decides what players Mark what player. Is that a set piece expert decision. A managers or even another 1st team coach...

We've conceded 6 goals from set pieces which isn't one of the best in the league but it's firmly midtable. We're nothing like a Wolves who have conceded 17, Southampton 16, or United themselves who have conceded 12.

We've also scored 5 from set pieces which again, isn't the worst in the league, it puts us 16th.

Of course, room for improvement but set pieces aren't the problem for us this season.

The problem is we very very rarely create enough good chances and we regularly concede them hence a -1.02 xGD per 90 which = guaranteed relegation, unless that number significantly changes.
