Hope we're not looking at a spillage; sea birds are suffering badly already from bird flu, the last thing we need is oil slicks coming into the breeding season.

Radar isn’t infallible, and needs replacement parts to keep operating properly. Also the settings of the radar can be changed, and if you’re not careful it won’t show any targets.

Certainly appears to be poor watchkeeping.

In last couple of hours conspiracy theories are starting to appear, even suggestions that the container ship had been hacked by Russia.

When the incident happened I checked other ships in the area and there were another couple of tankers also at anchor, both registered in Marshall Islands so assume American.

We are used to tankers at anchor for extended periods off Lowestoft, makes you wonder what they have been carrying. Seems strange the ship struck was carrying aviation fuel for US navy, when was an American carrier last in the North Sea?

The avgas will have been for Lakenheath. Plenty of ports along the Humber.

Hacking a ship isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, but the possibility is minuscule.

Our equipment tends not to be connected to an internet connection, and overriding autopilot would be easy.

The conspiracy theories are going to be rubbish, with the answer being a rather more mundane “the officer of the watch was asleep” or something to do with restricted visibility.

Nope, you can easily turn off the collision alarms on radar and ECDIS.

But why on Earth would you?

I manage all the non-commercial air traffic up that way, been a mad 48hrs. A nice quiet but foggy start to the week quickly turned into chaos.

The fog was certainly thick but as has been discussed, multiple systems to stop such instances. Should be interesting to see what translates from the investigation.

Somehow it will end up Ukraines fault!

Surely if Ukraine started the war by being invaded and bombed, this accident was the American Tanker’s fault for being stationary and in the way.

Portugal should withhold its sardine exports and switch off Nandos. That’ll show ‘em!

Edit: no point in restricting Port as a punishment. I think the Betrayers are more into bourbon and dishwater beer.

It’s annoying.

I don’t need an alarm to tell me the CPA is less than 1nm, I am doing my job.

I see what you mean. Are they just dumb proximity alarms, or are there alarms which take account of momentum too?

Basic alarms that you can set a CPA (closest point of approach) and TCPA (time to CPA)

You can set it from 0.1nm and 1 minute upwards.

They can sound on radars, ECDIS, and any integrated alarm systems. Often turned to lowest setting due to the noise, and if they’re integrated to the ships alarm it can be quite bothersome.

Certainly if you’re keeping an effective lookout, then you could argue that you don’t need such alarms. But they are handing, especially when coasting such as Solong was.

The navigational aid are just aids. They are there to assist, and if used effectively then incidents like this don’t happen.

As usual, you provide TWTD with greater relevant knowledge than the national news is able to muster. Anything maritime and you can guarantee it will be an Insurance industry talking head. They obviously have a perspective, but talk like all policies and procedures are followed at all times.

You've put the flesh on the bones here!

There is a Martime insurance guy on TWTD, a very good bloke, whose signature I see every day when I pass the mess room (some of our insurance stuff is displayed for all crew to see on A Deck between the crew mess and officers mess).

He’s been to my company head office more than I have!

I’m always willing to answer anything that you have questions about life at sea, ships, etc.

The investigation will be interesting for sure, quite a lot of things can go wrong with big floating objects ion poor visibility. Anyone remember the European Gateway sitting partially underwater off Felixstowe in the early 80s?*

A deliberate ramming is unlikely, "some people" have been jamming and spoofing GPS in the Baltic which will definitely cause collisions at some stage but seems unlikely this far out.

*A car ferry that hit collided with another ship.

GPS jamming / spoofing is more likely to cause ships to run aground than collide.

Again, with proper navigation techniques this can also be negated by use of radar and position fixing using ranges and bearings from land.

Reports that the Solong failed a number of PSC checks in the last year. (Of course that doesn't mean they were not fixed since)

Ah the PSC checks range from paperwork to proper deficiencies.

In October PSC Officers visited in Grangemouth and 2 deficiencies were found.

The newspapers shouting about steering issues are morons. Solong’s Compass heading from the emergency steering position was “not readable”. Which was found in July 2024. They were given 3 months to fix it, hence the subsequent follow up.

This could have been a malfunctioning display, a location issue, or a lighting issue.

I can do a full analysis of the PSC history of Solong if you like.

Similar to the MOT then? You failed this go fix it within X time. I presume if something vital/serious failed a check the Ship would not be allowed leave port?

Just thought I'd share what I read, as you say sounds like the media putting spin on the story to keep the clicks coming. No doubt the actual truth is what is being discussed with the skipper.

That’ll just be a coincidence. The Solong has been on that run for a while and she has previously used the same route she took this time. It’s just this time there was a ship anchored on her course line.

Anything serious and the ship gets detained. The ship can even be blacklisted and refused entry to ports within a PSC area for a period of time.
