What’s been most surprising to you this season? 12:33 - Mar 17 with 12491 viewsIllinoisblue

On or off the pitch?

1. The fact that members of the press/media are counted in attendance figures. (This will never make any sense)

2. Finding out the head analyst at goalkeeper, com - who convinced us to buy Muric - has zero experience in professional football and only job since leaving university was at Tesco. This is all on LinkedIn if it sounds too far fetched to be true.

3. Just how much better the ground looks now.

That we look further off the pace now than we did early in the season. I expected us to improve as we adapted to the level and new signings bedded in etc.

Hard work in the gym can get you so far, if you don’t have the genetics naturally tho, a bit stuck

Or are you? This stuff has been going on "off season" since Alan Wells was running in the Olympics. There are always ways around. Just ask that tennis player, Sinner.

Most promoted teams tend to struggle in the second half of the season though. I expected it to happen to us last year to be honest.

People keep rolling out this potential meme that our recruitment of Muric was based on the expertise of a Tesco employee.

I checked it out at the time. The founder did indeed work at Tesco as a data analyst, but it appears to have been a 'fill-in' job as a result of COVID, in parallel to continuing to operate goalkeeper.com. Like many employments, it's not unreasonable to assume that recruitment of goalkeepers during COVID and 20/21 was in low demand, and it was necessary to find gainful employment elsewhere to pay the bills.

Added to that, the guy is an expert in data analysis methodologies, and may only be responsible for setting up the backend framework. CEOs rarely 'do the horse work', but employ people to run the technical side of any business. There may well be other people who have the practical professional playing experience who undertake the analysis and reporting/recommendations - just using the tools developed by him from is academic expertise.

Now I'm only speculating how goalkeeper.com might be set up, but there are far too many assumptions being made about how goalkeeper.com operates, and who does what. Only a fool would jump to these conclusions based on the limited information one can view on LinkedIn.

The 'we signed Muric because a Tesco employee's website told us to' is up there with 'the ref let the Leicester snow game play out because he was scared of Roy Keane' in things that clearly aren't true but keep getting legs because they make a better story than the more humdrum reality.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

The patronising nature of the vast majority of pundits/reporters once the first week or so was over.

The fact that middle/lower table Premier League teams are really really good.

The size and physicality of the players in the Premier League.

The lack of perspective from a section of our fanbase who seem to get a huge kick out of being negative at every opportunity.

The fact I genuinely miss the Championship

LOL, I don't think a website can be credited with signing Muric.

Maybe the company behind the website, and the data / analysis they provide, but that's somewhat different.

I'm not sure what's worse tbh.

That we signed a player based on the data from a website, or one of the recruitment analysts watched Muric play and thought it would be a good idea to sign him, or that Ashton believed he was worth £8M.

Gap from Champ to PL , quality, power, pace is much bigger than expected

That £125m investment doesn’t even buy standstill competitiveness

That we’ve looked worse as the season has progressed, I really sold myself the dream that we would be a second half season team

Yup.

I can understand Journo's being included as they are there but including ST holders who haven't attended is the odd bit.

So did the none attending ST holder pay for his seat????

Not necessarily surprising but the whole "progressive" football thing can die an ugly death.

1. Teams defending a corner in such a manner that the biggest opposition player isn't picked up by the biggest defender and going all zonal. Philogene getting buried by Maguire a particular favourite but see also, McCallister v Burn on Sunday.
2. Teams quite happy to get everyone back on corners, providing no out ball and simply waiting for the opposition to get back in shape before the goalie passed it 2yds to the right and ceasing any momentum and potential advantage.
3. Nobody marking the back post any more playing directly into the hands of times who can whip a decent corner near post for a flick across goal and providing no simple goal line cover in the event of a 6yd melee.
4. Nobody happy to whip the ball 1st time into the "mixer" once a decent angle has been worked and instead looking to work the ball back over from one side of the pitch to the other. For ever.
5. Half & Half Scarfs and the people who buy them.

Modern football is sh1t.

See also pyrotechnic displays and ‘fan experience’ (forgetting that the experience we actually want is a good game of football).

Also, us fans now being called the fan base. Is that because it’s now openly acknowledged we’re at the bottom in terms of priorities?

Agree with the dugout thing. Bit of a shock to the system seeing a huge retinue with iPads reclining on plush seating when John Duncan with a notepad sitting in a glorified bus shelter about to put David Gregory on for the last twenty minutes against Oxford on a Tuesday night seems like it was only yesterday.
