Great Scots who have played for Town but never won an international cap 10:51 - Mar 21 with 4162 viewsWeWereZombies

Phil's line about Hirst being only the fifth Town player to win a cap for Scotland surprised me, but then I tried to think of others and could only come up with three...who didn't:

Bill Baxter - not even for boxing...
Jimmy Robertson - One cap but either when playing for St Mirren or Spurs
Alex Mathie - Unused squad member in 1987 FIFA Youth Championship

When you think about the Scottish managers we have had here (Scott Duncan, err John Duncan, George Burley, another one who's name I can't remember but I think he played for some German club as a participant in a prestigious tournament) are we a bit unrepresented north of the border ?

Gerry Baker, played for US, where he was born to an English father and Scottish mother, but was raised in Scotland. Brother Joe played for England.

The Scotchish manger you can’t remember is obviously John McGreal. Def info.

Well Liverpool may be a bit Scotchish but it isnae Scots. Maybe I was thinking of Jimmy Forsyth or Ian McParland, there aren't any other Town managers from Scotland who haven't been mentioned yet, are there ?

I’m sure any of them would have mentioned it if they’d played any games for or against big clubs. I’ve not heard anything.

(Liverpool my arse. If it’s got a ‘Mc’ in the name it’s Scottish. End of).

Paul, Paul, that's got me thinking...no, nothing comes to mind.

Historically, Mc is Irish, Mac is Scottish. Think John McGreal's background is Irish, but too far back for him to qualify, I believe it was checked out at the time.

Ian Redford was a very good player in a very good Dundee United team. I don't know if he was ever 'in the conversation' for Scotand when he was there, or at Town.

May he rest in peace.

I honestly thought Redford played for Scotland in his Rangers days, but a quick look at Wiki shows it was U21 only.

In both Gaelic languages Mac is the original. Mc is an Anglicisation, with the rest of the surname also being Anglicised.

I believe Mc is the more usual Anglicisation in Ireland, whereas Scottish surnames have a mixture of Mc and Mac.

The best way to distinguish is the rest of the surname. Some are unique to Ireland and some to Scotland, but there are often surnames which are the same in both Gaelic languages (with minor spelling differences) and what distinguishes them is the Anglicisation of the rest of the surname.

For example,

McDonnell (Irish) - McDonald (Scottish).

McHugh (Irish) - McCue (Scottish)

McFadden (Irish) - McFadyen (Scottish).

I might add that my mother's middle name was McFadyen, to reflect her mother's name. McFadyen means son of little Patrick and is spelt Macphaidein in Scottish Gaelic.

Such names (being patronymic) were not at the time really surnames but became set in stone when Anglicised for the purpose of things like the registration of births.

In Scotland (I don't know about Ireland) all of these had male and female forms depending on the bearer, e.g. all Mac- names become Nic- if the person is female.

David Johnson the Second nearly played for Scotland. Cleared by Fifa, he was set up to play for Scotland, but there was some Home Nations red tape which stopped him. Played for Jamaica instead.

Scott Fraser. Didn't work out after the crazy Cookie summer signing spree.

Before my time watching Ipswich, but Doug Moran played 42 league games in the season we won the league. He didn't win any caps for Scotland.

There was also Danny Hegan whom I did see play. He was born in Scotland but represented Northern Ireland, maybe because his chances with the Scottish team were limited.

Another I saw play was Frank Brogan who didn't win any caps.

Thing is about Frank Brogan (whom I saw play often) and such as Doug Moran was that for most of the Sixties Scotland were spoilt for choice. So they were up against such undroppable talents as Willie Johnston and Charlie Cooke.

Many of the Town's Scots from past eras would be in contention for the Scotland of today - not to mention that, back then, grandparents were not a thing in relation to national selection. So, I suppose that there most have been many others in those past decades who could have claimed to be Scottish under current grandparent rules, but whose claims would never have surfaced.

Alex Mathie can probably feel a bit hard done by not making the Euro96 cut for Scotland. Scored for Ipswich regularly, starting in the Premier League and then the Championship, I think over 20 goals before that competition.

Probably born in the wrong era, Rangers were strong then, McCoist was basically their Shearer?

David Johnson II's international history was a complex as it gets. He was born in Jamaica to an English mother & played a few friendly internationals for the country of his birth, but as a British passport holder born outside the UK, he was eligible for all of the 4 home nations. Northern Ireland wanted him, but he rejected them for Wales, partly because his wife was Welsh. He then got injured & didn't join up with the Welsh squad. Scotland then approached him, but it was then pointed out that as his mother was English, a prior agreement between the 4 home nations meant he could only represent England. During all this hullabaloo, Johnson discovered that his natural mother had been murdered by his father & that he had been adopted by foster parents after spending time in a children's home.
