Two questions: Anyone on here use a sleep tracker? And anyone given up sugar? 09:43 - Mar 24 with 5023 views | The_Flashing_Smile | I don't want to pay the earth for one, but I'd like one that's useful. I'm guessing wearables are best? The ones that are just app based aren't going to work because surely they'd pick up whoever you're sleeping next to as well?! Failing that, if anyone can tell me why I'm tired all the time... Hardly ever drink, eat well, even gave up caffeine a month and a half ago, but that hasn't made a difference. Thinking about trying to give up sugar next...

Two questions: Anyone on here use a sleep tracker? And anyone given up sugar? on 09:55 - Mar 24 with 2933 views | Guthrum | A blood test might be a good idea. I went for one a couple of weeks ago and they discovered my medium-term blood sugar (HbA1c) was about three times what it should be. Finger-prick test was very high, too. Had a phase of being very thirsty and peeing a lot, but otherwise no indicators or risk factors (e.g. weight) for diabetes. Have made big changes to diet (from high-carb to very low/slow release), on Metformin and fitted with a blood-sugar monitor. Diagnosis and treatment ongoing, but the numbers are already coming down after just a few days. Can't say I feel massively better, but then I didn't feel bad in the first place. Moral of the tale, get yourself checked out before it gets bad (I almost never went to the doctor).

I should've probably said, my sleep routine is very good. No screens, no eating too late. Dark/cool room. I generally read before bed.

A sleep tracker can actually make your sleep worse, you can develop orthosomni (form of anxiety caused by obsessing over “perfect sleep” data). Constantly analyzing your sleep can shift focus away from how you feel and toward chasing metrics, which can ironically lead to poorer sleep quality. It’s not dissimilar to how Strava can impact your cycling or running, focus on how you feel, not what the numbers tell you how you “feel”. Not to mention most devices available otc give inaccurate or overly simplistic readings, especially when it comes to sleep stages like REM or deep sleep, only clinical equipment will measure accurately.

I've had blood tests for sleep specifically and health generally and everything is fine. They don't test for everything though do they? I was thinking of trying one of those Zoe tests, that I think covers a lot more.

Yeah, appreciate that Benters, and Lady Dollers said go easy on yourself at the moment, it's a particularly unusual/stressful time. But my sleep/tiredness issues go back years.

This. Years ago a routine blood test picked up that I was enormously deficient (I think it was by over 50% or something). Got on a course of 1-a-day high strength approved by my GP & most of my previous tiredness dropped away, energy increased. Best taken after meals or eating something fatty to help absorption. Has been said by some that zinc in a low dose also helps increase D3 absorption, but I'm not a medic.

You could try the Zoe test but it is quite expensive and you could first start by following the sort of things they suggest eating (as I have done), although some are not necessarily that cheap. Blueberries, almonds, olive oil, avocadoes, oily fish, kefir, oats and products with high fibre spring to mind. The other thing I have done is to cut down on things with added sugar, preferring instead things like bananas and blueberries which I believe are better for you when it comes to blood sugar. I also eat roughly 8 or 9 portions of fruit and veg a day. [Post edited 24 Mar 10:27]

I think it depends on the individual to be honest. For me personally a sleep tracker has helped. I suffer from insomnia and the data on the sleep tracker often shows that I have in fact achieved more sleep that I imagined, so for me it has been a reassuring comfort at times. I can see how it could easily go the other way though. If you are somebody that might obsess over the data then they are probably best avoided.

I do all my cooking with olive oil and eat a fair bit of oily fish, and the occasional smashed avocado. I could probably eat more of the rest though.

Think they covered most of those elements in the general blood test, or the follow-up ones (of which there were a lot). I am told that a lower-carb diet (or, specifically, lower quick-release carb) may help with tiredness, but that's purely anecdotal, not from a medical source.

A friend of mine took a low carb diet to extremes and his cholesterol ended up going through the roof.

Yes, you've got to watch that. Not good to do an ultra-low carb/Keto diet for too long. You can end up effectively digesting yourself. I'm not going that far, just cutting down a fair bit. Used to eat masses of carbs, due to having a physical job, so there was a lot of leeway (that may have been the source of the problem). My cholesterol score was extremely good.

Avoid refined sugars and white bread, were the key things the nurse told me.

Glad you've bigged up olive oil for cooking. The less refined stuff is actually better for frying, allegedly, but I've never had any of the problems some say using the extra-virgin grade brings. Olive oil is the only cooking oil that stays in its nature & doesn't degenerate into different chemicals when heated, according to a chemist friend.

Has a very low smoke-point tho. So frying must be done gently.

And anyone given up sugar? on 11:40 - Mar 24 with 2335 views | SaleAway | I have a garmin that I use.... sleep metrics perhaps aren't that true ( I wake up multiple times during the night, that it doesn't pick up), but its stress monitoring is interesting. My wife has high stress when asleep, so currently being referred through sleep clinic to try and understand why her sleep is not restorative. Whereas even when I wake up a few times, I still feel refreshed. Note: alcohol processing by the body is terrifying viewing on a wearable.... the stress levels on the body of processing alcohol are very noticeable.
