Two questions: Anyone on here use a sleep tracker? And anyone given up sugar? 09:43 - Mar 24 with 5691 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

I don't want to pay the earth for one, but I'd like one that's useful.

I'm guessing wearables are best? The ones that are just app based aren't going to work because surely they'd pick up whoever you're sleeping next to as well?!

Failing that, if anyone can tell me why I'm tired all the time...
Hardly ever drink, eat well, even gave up caffeine a month and a half ago, but that hasn't made a difference. Thinking about trying to give up sugar next...

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Two things to think about, do you have a high BMI? (sleep apnoea) probably not if you have been looking into sleep issues, I take a multivitamin with iron and vitamin D 2 or 3 days a week in case I am low on anything.

I gave up Sugar about 18 months ago. I'm not anal about it in that I check everything I eat for what's in it, but basically gave up all sweets, cakes, biscuits, Ice Cream and all the obvious stuff. Was just clear to me how bad it all is for us all and thought I'd give it a go. I honestly don't really miss it all although my 'treat' is now 95% Lindt Dark Chocalate that has minimal Sugar. Totally addicted to that now.

Also, about 4 years ago I learnt about 'mouth taping' to encourage nose breathing while sleeping. I used to snore and suffer from mild Sleep Apnea. It's changed my life. I sleep only for about 6 hours but I feel it's quality sleep where I wake up refreshed and have had no Apnea problems since. Check out James Nestor's book 'Breath'. There are a fair few interviews with him on YouTube where I learnt about this stuff. Believe me it works but you have to stick with it ...

Oh, and I drink about 10 cups of coffee a day and smoke roll ups!! 🤣

That's so funny, I've been doing the mouth-tape thing for a few months after seeing one of his youtube interviews, and also got the book for Christmas.

Sounds like you're on a similar path to me (other than coffee and roll ups!) but slightly ahead. Did you/do you feel different after cutting down the sugar?

Glad you've bigged up olive oil for cooking. The less refined stuff is actually better for frying, allegedly, but I've never had any of the problems some say using the extra-virgin grade brings.

Olive oil is the only cooking oil that stays in its nature & doesn't degenerate into different chemicals when heated, according to a chemist friend.

2 teaspoons of olive oil every day, lovely. Oils the joints and brain nicely.

Yeah, appreciate that Benters, and Lady Dollers said go easy on yourself at the moment, it's a particularly unusual/stressful time. But my sleep/tiredness issues go back years.

Like I said it’s a hard thing to go through losing one’s parents,I still go to phone my mother sometimes and she’s been gone five years now.

Regarding the sleep as you get older you get to look forward to a good Kip.

My tip is to get out in the fresh air as much as you can and don’t keep checking your phone when you are out.

I gave up refined sugar and all other ultra processed foods, around a year ago. I've lost 6 kg and feel much better for it.
That said, I have always had sleep problems, due to ADHD and periods of RLS. Lack of sleep affects my mental health and work performance and so for me, the trade off is I now use medication. It helps but I feel a bit groggy for an hour or 2 in the morning.
I also take vitamin D tablets between October and March, as we don't see much sun here during the winter.

A blood test might be a good idea.

I went for one a couple of weeks ago and they discovered my medium-term blood sugar (HbA1c) was about three times what it should be. Finger-prick test was very high, too. Had a phase of being very thirsty and peeing a lot, but otherwise no indicators or risk factors (e.g. weight) for diabetes.

Have made big changes to diet (from high-carb to very low/slow release), on Metformin and fitted with a blood-sugar monitor. Diagnosis and treatment ongoing, but the numbers are already coming down after just a few days. Can't say I feel massively better, but then I didn't feel bad in the first place.

Moral of the tale, get yourself checked out before it gets bad (I almost never went to the doctor).

I don’t think Dollers has much chance of passing a prick test .

Sorry Flash, it was set up too well. As Guthers says, go to your GP (if you can get an appointment!). There might be n underlying issue that’s easily rectified. Or it might be fine, but doesn’t hurt to get checked out. My sis-in-law is a GP and she’s mentioned in the past how many people tell her they feel tired all the time. It sounds like it’s very common, and I’m pretty knackd most of the time and would struggle without coffee. It could just be the stresses of modern life/our crap diets/not moving enough.

I’m a coffeeholic. I was in the gym at 6 this morning and am now sat by the pool watching my lad’s swim training while tucking into my third coffee. Other people have recovery shakes, I just need recovery coffee. Now I’ll go home and have a couple of cafetières and then I’m ready to face the day.

I haven’t up once and felt better most of the time, but did miss the taste/routine/rush of it. Mushroom coffee is supposed to be a good alternative but sounds a bit hippy.

I take it as a compliment - that I would fail in a test for being a prick!

I've been to the doctors several times over the years for the tiredness, was once told I had low iron several years ago but that's it. My diet is very good - I cook proper meals, varied and mostly healthy, steam all my veg, use olive oil to cook with, and I go for a run most mornings. So I feel like I'm doing all the right things, just wondering if there's something I'm missing!

Assuming you have other coffees throughout the day, that's a hell of a lot of coffee!

Me and Lady Dollers have tried mushroom coffee and both found it disgusting!

You're in the same space as Mrs SA.... does all the good things, but just doesn't feel refreshed. The sleep/stress tracker can show that something is not right, but GP still doesn't seem to be able to help. the 30 week waiting list to see a consultant at the Sleep clinic suggests that there's a lot of people in the same boat...

Turn off your WiFi at night. Turn your phone off, including special functions by going deep into your settings. Don't sleep with your phone in your room.

Frying with olive oil is not as good as people are saying in this thread, it's okay for poaching like when making a Spanish omelette but it does denature at high temperatures. There are good alternatives, the most easily accessible of which is coconut oil.

As well as doing some physical activity every day, do something creative every day too.

I've had a non obsessive sugar free diet for years now but I've been a poor sleeper for 40 years and I still am. I'm not overweight, I eat very well, I could exercise more but the things which make the difference for me are:

Turning off WiFi
Sleeping away from phones
Going for walks/runs without phones
Doing something creative
Avoiding people/things that cause you to be agitated: reduce TWTD forum intake and don't watch the evening news.
I'd also stop down-voting people's comments on online forums. If you want to publicly show your disapproval of another person's opinions, you're not in the best place mentally.
A 10 minute mindfulness meditation works well too but I found this incredibly difficult to do. If you're a runner or walker perhaps say a mantra in your head in rhythm with your footsteps for 10 minutes or more on your walk or run.

Finally, don't reject things which are not supported by science. Try everything for a month and see if they work for you.

I said goodbye to my mum for the last time last week and Ive slept quite well since because I know she is sleeping better too. Three years ago when my dad passed away it was a very different story. We all have to find our own ways of dealing with what the world chucks at us.

Good luck and don't hesitate to PM me if you're looking for honest, non-judgemental, ideas from someone you don't know very well.

Some interesting stuff there.
Something sticks out to me though, and I have to ask... you say about all this stuff, but you also say "I've been a poor sleeper for 40 years and I still am". So is this stuff just helping a bit, but not the full answer?

All this helps me a lot, especially being away from EMFs.

People have different sensitives to many things. When I stay at a friend's house for a week in the middle of nowhere away from EMFs and news I sleep like a baby.

When I return to normal life, work, phones, news etc, that's when my sleep quality takes a downturn. It's largely unavoidable.

My standard state is having a very slight headache which is undetectable until I spend a week away from EMFs and then evident when I return to normal life. In other words I'd never detect my headache if I didn't step away sources of EMFs. Whilst I know we all have different sensitivities to this stuff (I've become more sensitive the more I've distanced myself from it) I believe it affects us all to a degree.

EMFs haven't always been part of my life as I'm knocking on 60y/o. As a kid I was weaned on coffee and have always been a bit on the curious side and unless I go to bed shattered, I still find it very difficult to drop off because my head is whirring over something or another.

For most of my adult life I've "survived" on 2 to 5 hours of sleep a night. My mum was the same and she has just passed away in her mid-80s, the last 5 years of which was with dementia.

Sleep is very important so please do your best to get your troubled sleep sorted out as soon as possible.

Giving up caffeine might be a reason why you "feel" tired. You may have become conditioned to using it to get into a fully alert state earlier than you would have done.

But it's probably just down to post-viral knackeredness after several bouts of COVID (whether or not you are aware you had COVID every time or not).

Or maybe just ageing!

My condolences regarding your parents.

Agree that people should experiment & do what's best for them, so with that in mind I'd just add that sleeping & going for walks without an instantly accessible phone would be downright dangerous for myself, & I imagine some others.

Sounds like you're on a similar path to me (other than coffee and roll ups!) but slightly ahead. Did you/do you feel different after cutting down the sugar?

It's a question I get asked all the time and I wish I could say that there was a real immediate wow Factor and I felt fantastic straight away. However, over time I definitely don't feel as sluggish as I used to. I used to really like my biscuits, sweets and ice creams and I realized that I was a type 2 diabetic waiting to happen although never overweight. Another reasons that I also gave it up was that my research told me that sugar was inflammatory and I have to say but over time I do not get nearly as many aches and pains as I used to.

I've also cut out most processed foods and try and watch my carbs. I do still love my beer though and a sucker for chips and sourdough bread.

The thing is as I have moved into my 60s I've adapted a number of protocols in my life. I do Wim Hof breathing and cold showers daily for example. It's difficult to know what effect each thing has on it's own but the sum of it all seems to be working for me. At the moment anyway, ... fingers crossed.

Living in Australia I'm also lucky that I can get a lot of sunlight. There is a lot of research that says getting outside first thing in the morning is good for your circadian rhythm which would surely aid sleep.

I'm very curious as to how you're finding the mouth taping? I can give you some tips that I've learnt if it helps. It really works! Feel free to pm me if you wish.

I don’t think there’s anything obvious you’re missing. Sleep well, eat well with lots of different types of veg and fruit and move a lot covers the basics. It’s all quite simple really. If you’re worried or it’s affecting what you can do, I’d have a word with the GP. There could well be a straightforward answer if you’re lacking something, or maybe even allergic to something.

Sounds like I’ll give mushroom coffee a miss!

I do the 4 inhale, 4 hold and 8 exhale breathing when I meditate. Not sure I could do the cold showers. Tried a bit in my old gym which had a sauna, but not for me! I could probably do an ice bath - easing yourself in seems more doable to me. Lady Dollers' nephew is a footballer (just signed for Birmingham) and he has his own.

I'm fine with the mouth taping so far, no real noticeable benefit for me yet but Lady Dollers has reported I snore much less!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Sounds like the breathwork you're doing is Box Breathing? Can't be sure from your description. Do you do breath holds? Not sure if you would be up to it, but try doing some Breathwork first thing in the morning. Deep breathing with holds can Oxygenate your blood and perk you right up for the day ahead.

Sounds like the mouth taping is starting to work. If you are snoring less you are surely getting better quality sleep. When I started I woke up for the first couple of months with the tape gone indicating that I must have switched to mouth breathing during the night breaking it. After that I gradually started waking up with the tape intact and now do every morning. Means I'm breathing through the nose all night which is so much better for you. Don't ask me to explain the science as it loses me ... something about Nitric Oxide I think ...

Returning to your OP is it physical tiredness that you feel you're suffering from or sleepiness?
