Arsenal are that far behind Liverpool, but commentators still think they're in with a chance.

Imagine! That said I reckon Chaplin should have had a more prominent role.

Yep! He knows where the net is and a good understanding with Hirst and Davis as an a example. Just injuries always worked against us, to keep either a similar 11, or bring on the a few of the league 1 boys at the same time.

I think bringing on Chaplin and Hirst together would have been a good plan late in games, instead we were stuck with Ali.

I personally think our front 4 will be lethal next year at championship level, including a couple that we can bring on.

The manager, Kieran McKenna, persisting with Muric, Greaves and co.

We got hammered by this West Ham side when they were having their worst patch of the season, Wolves are beating them comfortably tonight, it's pretty sad to see, but we have to accept that mistakes have been made.

When you say they weren't any better than the ones already here, do you have evidence for that? Other players always seem to be elevated when result are not going well.

Do you think Harry Clarke is a better footballer than Ben Johnson?

What have you seen of Ogbene?

It has not happened for him yet in a struggling team but Philogene was one of Villa's best players against Bayern in the Champs league, to write him off is crazy. Let's see how next year goes, when we are on the front foot and a more cohesive unit.

For sure there has been some disappointments, Muric, we got massively wrong and possibly Greaves on current performances but he still may have a high ceiling.

The notion we should have just kept with our squad and rode on the PL is a bit ridiculous really.

You are being very selective with your comparisons there, and statistically speaking, no, we were decisively better with the "League One" boys in. The results have proven it, and I guess the proof in the pudding will be next season depending on how many of these remain.

We paid waaaaaaaaaaay over the odds for run of the mill, playoff bracket, Championship players. Philogene was the biggest mugging off we have had under Ashton, his agent deserves to be added to the Premier League half of fame because he is a genius getting those two fees for him in one season, because he's not worth anywhere near that much.

our recruitment was terrible, only blue tinted fanboyism will cloud you from seeing it, but it has been. It's only just April and we're relegated, 12 points adrift and won't scrape 30 points for the money we spent.

It's bad. Its very very bad.

The spin over the last few weeks was that Wolves were a one man team and they'd struggle to pick up points while he was suspended... Which of course was total, self soothing nonsense. Anyway this is a typical game between two sides who have nothing to play for at they end of the season.

We recruited woefully, were naive tactically and are not good enough to be in this league, not by a long shot. Heads have been down for a while, going through the motions, waiting for the inevitable. We will not get near 30 points by season end. If we come back up, it will be even harder to break the established 17. Wolves will have another season full season on us to get it right, West Ham now have a decent manager, Everton a new stadium and could push on and Manure/Spurs won't be that sht forever either.

We really needed to finish 17th this time.

Unlike you to put a positive spin on things......

Beats constantly slagging off the team I support.

There’s a lot of people on here in the latter half of the season who take a weird pleasure in pointing out everything that is wrong with the club and how poorly we have done.

All a bit strange, I don’t get it personally.

I’ve enjoyed parts of this season, and been very frustrated by other parts and certainly surprised by the huge gulf in quality.

I have actually been more critical than most regarding the fees we paid for some championship players. I was also concerned that it wasn't just the recruitment network and that maybe KM and Ashton were only interested in English speaking players. Although to be fair I haven't post on here for a year so you wouldn't know that.

However, I don't think you are being very balanced either.

I didn't even mention Delap, he was a new signing (with only first team evidence of Championship loan). We will recoup a lot of our total spend on him and maybe Omari alone.

Ogbene got injured, as did many others. I think the likes of Johnson, Szmodics, O'Shea, Clarke, Philogene will serve us very well next year. Hopefully if we get promoted there will be enough progression than many of them can make the step up next time but we will certainly need a varied approach.

I firmly believe there were 2 sliding doors moments this season.

1. Leicester at home - Non awarding of a penalty, Philips sending off and then the ref could have repaired his damage by giving the soft free kick on Morsy when (admittedly softly) fouled on halfway which then led to the 96 minute equaliser.

2. Fulham (A) - Jack Clarke unluckily hitting the post at 2-1 up in the 89th minute. The immediate break then led to the penalty for 2-2.

The drop off since Fulham is the most alarming and most disappointing aspect for me.

Southampton at home was a disaster for morale surely.

We adopted a strategy of buying good championship players. What I've noticed this season is Sommerville and other players outside of us have been gradually introduced from the bench.

We've had to rely on green potential at this level and hope it comes good. It has here and there like Delap and Cajuste but it's looked obviously off like Clarke and Greaves in some spots.

Philogene was terrible business I agree. Buying another lightweight flair player in Jan who didn't want to join us in the summer for £21m was a shambles. I'm sure he'll be handy in the championship but so should anyone in world football for that outlay.

I'm less sure we'll bounce straight back up. It's a slog of a league and we'll need to replace Morsy/Luongo and find a spare striker. No shortage of expensive wide options. McKenna may leave and that will destabilise the DNA considerably.

Who knows.

J. Clarke was one of the best players in the Championship last season. Szmodics was arguably the best player in the Champinship last season. Greaves was one of the best defenders in the Championship last season. Hutchinson was part of a promotion winning side last season. Phillips is an England International coming back from and injury and fitness problems. Cajuste is a Swedish International. O'Shea has been one of our best players this season. Philogene is an English u21 International.

Don't disagree in principle, but think that calling Cajuste "green potential" is just plain wrong. 80 apps between ligue 1 and Serie A and 20 for Sweden tell his worth. Plus his Youtube highlight reel against proper European opposition blew the socks off anyone who bothered with it.

Kieran McKenna is one hell of a coach/manager. Once he got his teeth into this league, we were always going to improve. We actually started the season better than I thought, but now he is up to speed with the league and the new signings are listening and carrying out his instructions, we are in a very, very good place. The performance tonight, I think, will now be the norm, so safety is a very real possibility. McKenna is a magnificent coach and the players are listening and doing as he asks. If we carry on improving at the rate we already have, then we will pick up points a plenty.
Just as a side note, great atmosphere in the ground today.

Since then we've achieved 8 points in 17 games.

I appreciate you describe safety only as a possibility so this isn't intended as a gotcha post - but I find it hard to understand why someone who was expecting improvement in November is so critical of other fans who are upset we haven't shown any improvement whatsoever.

I think the prem is just a different animal. 80 appearances in Serie A is great for a cultured European technician but it's no guarantee of being decent in the Prem.
