1-0 Wolves on 20:21 - Apr 1 by vapour_trail | Disagree. First half of the season we were competitive. We just lost too many points that would have had us in the mix now through naivety and bad decisions. Since NY it’s been dreadful, We were never favourites to Dario but it wasn’t impossible. Hopefully there’s lessons learned. |
Indeed. It is disappointing that we seem to have regressed. Injuries clearly haven't helped but they affected us first half of the season too. Until January we were very much in touch with safety. Since then we can't buy a win and find ourselves potentially 4 wins away from being in touch.

You're not wrong. Been difficult to be positive about a lot this season - but I am looking forward to a reset next year. I think McKenna has had a poor season - but also think he knows what to do to get us back up next year.

1-0 Wolves on 20:40 - Apr 1 by Marshalls_Mullet | I agree with most of that. Promotion was the big thing. Go up, grab the money, come back down. It has been good in terms of the cash helping stabilise the club going forward. |
I think we would have been competitive this year if we stayed down and maybe a playoff team. However, it wouldn't have been with KM and we might not have ever tasted the PL money. It was huge injection for the club, stadium academy and most importantly squad, even though we didn't get it all correct from a recruitment standpoint. We just need to try capitalize as a parachute team and try and then stabilize in the top flight (easier said than done). [Post edited 1 Apr 20:58]

1-0 Wolves on 20:18 - Apr 1 by Marshalls_Mullet | Agreed. We do need to start being honest as a club, and stop pretending that this has been any sort of positive season. The gulf is huge, but we really haven't put up any sort of fight. I expected us to be relegated, but I did hope KM might somewhat outperform expectations and have us battling to the end. |
Sad it can't be on the playing side yet, but at least we're in a far better position financially and in terms of infrastructure, esp with the new pitch & training ground facilities etc. Sometimes you've just got to ratchet up bit by bit over time, it's hard work, there's some slippage back, but overall you're progressing.

The spin over the last few weeks was that Wolves were a one man team and they'd struggle to pick up points while he was suspended... Which of course was total, self soothing nonsense. Anyway this is a typical game between two sides who have nothing to play for at they end of the season. We recruited woefully, were naive tactically and are not good enough to be in this league, not by a long shot. Heads have been down for a while, going through the motions, waiting for the inevitable. We will not get near 30 points by season end. If we come back up, it will be even harder to break the established 17. Wolves will have another season full season on us to get it right, West Ham now have a decent manager, Everton a new stadium and could push on and Manure/Spurs won't be that sht forever either. We really needed to finish 17th this time.

Right. A fair question is how on earth we (or anybody coming up) is meant to create a side that’s capable of getting circa 40 points. Seems very difficult to do and surely needs a different approach to recruitment next time, with a focus on overseas players.

I suppose we are at least on the map again now. Let’s face it, the Greek chap wouldn’t have been jumping at the chance to join a complete unknown in July would he.

I’ve not heard anyone say the title is on or the relegation places aren’t done. However if Liverpool did collapse, Arsenal can be relied upon to close the gap given they’ve scored at about two points a game whereas at two thirds of a point a game we ain’t closing any gap unless we channel Leicester 2015.

Norwich couldn't recruit any better when they were known for being a yo-yo, the only way around it is to spend way over the odds to get them in, which we did with the Championship players we signed, but that was the problem, we recruited our permanent signings from Hull, Sunderland, Blackburn, West Brom, Burnley and Luton and paid silly money for them, absolutely silly money and they were not any better than the better players we already had here. The fact we have dropped key players to field them has been another reason we have sank like a stone. Our recruitment was woeful across two windows. When you are relying on players as poor as Godfrey and Enciso, in a relegation fight, you have all but waved the white flag. The next hold out for hope myth is that Man City will get deductions, which I doubt, and if they did, we'd probably still have finished 18th knowing how our season has gone.

I think elements of the recruitment have been poor but to say it's been woeful like a few, including this chap are saying seems particularly harsh doesn't it! We were always going to look to the championship as that is a talent pool where 1) The club would sell 2) The player would wants to come. Palace have done very well out of identifying EFL talent as an example. All that said, a couple did seem rather panic buys and it did not appear we even tried much in Europe? The French league seems to pull up some gems but as you say we were hardly on the map, or set up to do most of our business overseas. Surely that all changes if we get back. Recruitment can probably be awarded a much more accurate grade one way or another this time next year I guess.

Yeah I think that’s a good take. Also given the pace at which we’ve progressed, it’s not really a surprise that the recruitment department wasn’t ready.

When you say they weren't any better than the ones already here, do you have evidence for that? Other players always seem to be elevated when result are not going well. Do you think Harry Clarke is a better footballer than Ben Johnson? What have you seen of Ogbene? It has not happened for him yet in a struggling team but Philogene was one of Villa's best players against Bayern in the Champs league, to write him off is crazy. Let's see how next year goes, when we are on the front foot and a more cohesive unit. For sure there has been some disappointments, Muric, we got massively wrong and possibly Greaves on current performances but he still may have a high ceiling. The notion we should have just kept with our squad and rode on the PL is a bit ridiculous really. [Post edited 1 Apr 21:24]

The manager, Kieran McKenna, persisting with Muric, Greaves and co. We got hammered by this West Ham side when they were having their worst patch of the season, Wolves are beating them comfortably tonight, it's pretty sad to see, but we have to accept that mistakes have been made.
