US stock markets crashing - how significant a fall? on 23:26 - Apr 4 by WicklowBlue | Too early to invest yet, Trump is off Golfing for the weekend while the markets burn. Further dips to follow globally, listen to the mood music around the EU negotiations.... EU posed to add tariffs in a week or so if nothing changes and more at the end of the month. If Trump and Co don't start ceding ground the US could be facing a rolling wave of counter measures in the coming weeks keeping the downward pressure on markets and USD. Plus the Fed are already starting to grumble even more. Never ever try to double guess the market, the winner is always the longer term view. |
When I say now I mean this event, I don't necessarily mean right now. You do you though. When the markets rebound they may rebound hard and fast as the losses have been huge. Nikkei is trending up in the last few hours. Personally I think Trump needs to soften pretty soon or he'll lose all credibility. I see he's already put something on his non twitter saying 'hang in there'. Who knows though. [Post edited 4 Apr 23:44]

Not too many on my watchlist are in hard to resist territory just yet, but a couple will be getting close over the next 48 hours I imagine.

FTSE opened down 500 points and is now up 200+ points from that. Amazing volatility.

I have had a few price alerts but missed 2-3 which is annoying. 1-2 others are hovering 1% or so above the target.

Vistry Group (LON: VTY) triggered a buy for me today at 499 so will see how that performs over the coming months.

US stock markets crashing - how significant a fall? on 12:24 - Apr 4 by Nutkins_Return | He hasn't. I can't stand Trump. He's a bafoon and a repulsive human being. The things he is doing to his friends and allies is disgusting. But relatively short term some of this tariff stuff will bring some positive results for the US at least. I imagine his strategy is classic trump, go in hard and pull the trigger on some extreme stuff and when he gets a good chunk of what he wants (commitments of investment/manufacturing in US etc etc) he will reign it back. What is not clear is the longer term impact. The trust and goodwill lost. Strategically Europe will look to new markets rather than eggs in 'friendly' US basket etc. It's a new world order. In summary I'd back your stocks to be ok. [Post edited 4 Apr 17:56]

Good point. I think this could hugely backfire on the US if China sees this is as a chance to step up and offer good trade deals to the rest of the world. It will mean they will have to step up their imports but could really pull the rug from under America's feet.

Hang Seng in Hong Kong down 13% in one day. Biggest fall for 28 years. And Trump is still on social media this morning saying these countries are directly paying the USA billions of tariffs

the President's job isn't to micro manage fluctuations in the stock market. Trump has nailed his colours to the mast with his tariffs & he shouldn't have been surprised about the retaliation & market reaction. While I think his trade policies will ultimately prove disastrous, he's actually doing what he said he would do.

Think that’s the least of their problems to be honest - look where it was in 2018 before growing Chinese influence. Capitalisation has effectively halved. All the talk of replacing exports to the US with China is ridiculous. Western firms have already been reducing investment in China in the last couple of years. It’s an incredibly difficult place to do business with state interference and incredibly weak protection around IP. We need to focus on repairing our place in Europe, starting with joining the Single Market.

He’s now threatening China with an additional 50% tariff if they don’t stop matching what he has down to them. It’s like a child saying it’s his rules or he takes the ball home.

It’s exactly his rules and he doesn’t care about the consequences. It was always going to be that way which was why Starmer’s brown nosing was only ever going to get him a face full of bad gas and tariffs higher than Russia, N Korea and the Taliban. It’s higher than 10% too when you add in steel related items cars and parts. Time to sort out arrangements with the EU and countries we want to trade with.

Its worse than that. Its like a Russian bully dictator attacking a neighbour and then claiming its unacceptable for them to respond or retaliate. And that he warned them of the consequences of doing so.

US stock markets crashing - how significant a fall? on 00:21 - Apr 8 with 557 views | quirkie | It's going to get a heck of a lot worse yet, Trump won't back down, and nor will China. EU haven't got a clue what to do, and the UK is just a spare part in this. My portfolio has 25% in Stocks and it has taken a right hammering, not going to see it back to where it was at the start of the year for at least 5 years if not longer. If the DOW goes down to around 30000 I wouldn't be at all surprised. The FTSE I expect to be down under 6000 in a weeks or two. Maybe a buying opportunity then.
