Excellent R5l phone-in on EPL-Championship gap this a.m. on 16:42 - Apr 8 by Parsley | It just becomes harder and harder each season. I imagine that if say Burnley or Sheff Utd had stayed up last season they'd be a team that we'd hope to compete against this year but for every season that the same 3 that go up and get relegated the other teams in the Prem become more established and more difficult to compete with. Next season there'll be 17 teams that have had at least 3 seasons in the Premier League. Relies on an established side imploding, which at different times this season it looked like Everton, West Ham, Wolves or perhaps Palace might get sucked in but never materialised. |
The silly thing is, we've absolutely no right to be anywhere near any of the clubs in the premier league, and nor do any of the promoted clubs. Clubs are thrown around, and I do it loads too, like the 4 you've mentioned, as if they're close to us on any level. Everton have multiple England internationals, and a cursory glance at Wikipedia shows they've spent over £20 million at least 20 times! As have West ham, more in fact. Palace less so at a mere 25 transfers over £10 million, but do still have a few England regulars, and wolves have 20 over £18 million including £40 million plus on a current Brazilian international! The more you look, the more you realise just how much of a gaping chasm the difference is, and how anyone even vaguely stands a chance, and also how crazy it is when people, somewhat reasonably to be fair, moan about £7/8 million transfers like Muric not coming off. That's barely a punt for the rest of the prem. [Post edited 8 Apr 17:20]

I'm not sure exactly what's changed but something has, dramatically.

Excellent R5l phone-in on EPL-Championship gap this a.m. on 16:48 - Apr 8 by Jon_456 | Ultimately points wise we were no where near it in the end but given the context of our starting position, I don’t think we were actually that far off. The difference next time (should we go up next year) is that we will be in a position to spend £100-£150m on 3-4 prem quality players instead of having to bring in numbers to boost the squad. On top of that, the players we’ve had this season should in theory be better the next time we get there. |
Hopefully we can find players who’ll have more impact than Phillips and Johnson. And, crucially, dip into the global market and find some bargains.

Indeed, this is what makes PSR nothing more than protection for the established Prem teams. How is any EFL club meant to compete with that? The only way a team promoted from the Championship has a chance is if one of the established teams turns into a basketcase. How is that in any shape or form competition?

That's on a very small sample size, though. Is it a surprise we have been some way off having risen so rapidly from League 1 mediocrity? Leicester lost Maresca and Dewsbury Hall and didn't replace either well. Southampton were some way behind both clubs last season and don't seem to have improved. Personally, I don't think it will be the promoted 3 going straight back down season after season. Until recently it has been very much the exception and I think it will be again.

Excellent R5l phone-in on EPL-Championship gap this a.m. on 16:39 - Apr 8 by Benters | Hmm tricky one that. Of course the gulf is massive even to us who finished 2nd in the Championship, but look at the buzz it created getting promoted. I notice a lot of people are saying we will bounce straight back again,I’m not so sure I think a more realistic target will be playoffs next season. Still there you go,people will still go meet up for a few pints before hand, and enjoy the day whatever happens I guess.(other options are of course available). |
Playoffs a realistic target? No chance, based on football economics alone and our net spent was high last off season. We will be one of the favorites for automatic promotion, possibly the favorite and that will be the expectation.

Excellent R5l phone-in on EPL-Championship gap this a.m. on 13:19 - Apr 8 by LeoMuff | I don’t we were as far away as people think, 25 points lost from winning positions. We weren’t that far off being in the mix for me. |
Agree. A relatively small tweak to the personnel and/or a bit more luck with injuries get us over the line in enough of those games to have us right up Wolves' derriere and applying a lot of pressure to them.

Excellent R5l phone-in on EPL-Championship gap this a.m. on 08:10 - Apr 9 with 408 views | heavyweight | I think a contributing factor for promoted clubs struggling is the number of loans allowed in the Premier. Only 2 allowed from premier clubs - whereas in the championship you can have nearly half a team of loanees. Of course it's not a way to build a team long term, but it would be a low-ish cost way of getting premier experience in the first season. I'm sure the league will not relax financial rules for promoted clubs, but to allow additional premier loanees in the first two seasons wouldn't be the worst idea. Maybe 4 loanees in the first season and 3 in the 2nd ? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It’s this viewpoint that will be a problem for the club next season. Completely unrealistic. We should have sights on a promotion chasing campaign, and aim for the top two, but it will be a very competitive decision, as it should be.

Next season, if we don’t get promoted automatically, then that will be failure.

Excellent R5l phone-in on EPL-Championship gap this a.m. on 13:40 - Apr 8 by TRUE_BLUE123 | Of course but its also very likely as you say that there will be a season where one a team in the premier league just collapse. Be it through bad ownership, points deductions and the hope has to be that we are the club who benefit from that position. Just need to keep getting to the PL (easier said then done of course) and hope that one season you can break the cycle. But have to keep the faith in the club. |
Thing is - even if we were to go back up and get that 'lucky' season to stay up and then 'push on', what then? It's then an interminable existence finishing somewhere between 11th and 17th season on season which is even more dull than yo-yo-ing. Leaving Palace a fan told me he wished they were going back to the Championship for an exciting season. The gap is one problem but the real issue is the way the league has been stitched up so that it is impossible for even the worst Man Utd team in 50 years and a Tottenham side even we can beat to be anywhere near relegation. And of course Man City will win the FA Cup to crush even that slim hope of success. Newcastle with multiple times our fanbase have had to invest hundreds of millions just to win a league cup gor goodness sake!?! The whole thing is a totally dull experience - I listened to the Championship run-in last night and was already looking forward to being back there - so much more exciting at all parts of the table.

Just one season without massive stress would be good for the tickers of some elderly fans though
