Leif Davis 13:02 - Apr 12 with 3168 viewsringwoodblue

Over the last two seasons Davis has arguably been one of our best players and some were talking about a big money move and even an England call up but this season he has had quite a lot of criticism particularly defensively and unfortunately has not made the step-up in quality required for the PL

Is the Championship his level after all or has he just had an off season do you think?
Would he have been any better playing for a Palace, West Ham or one of those sides in PL mid-table?

I don't think he would've been any better at a different club to be honest. The good thing is that he and the club would have learned massively about expectations in the PL. If he stays with us for next season, wherever that may be, I think we would see a return to what he can be. After being called out regularly on MOTD I think his value monetarily wise would have taken a tumble, and other PL clubs may not be thinking he's what they need. Hope he stays with us.

His chance creation statistics beg to differ. In a PL team with a more experienced defensive unit that could cover for him when further up the pitch, he’d be a real asset.

Didn't he used to get exactly the same balance of praise and criticism for being a good attacking left back? (I presume that's the gist of your comment.)

He would have been better playing in a better team. I feel the same about Omari and Clarke. We just have lots of players stepping up to the league for the first time together. They will learn from it, some will probably get moves and im sure develop top be good premier league players.

Most of our players would have been. This also is symptomatic of the fact we haven't really established effective partnerships in any area of the pitch.

Yep I think that is right. In an ideal world I think the team would have looked something like

Muric
Axel
DOS
Greaves
Leif
Cajuste
Phillips
Ogbene
Omari
Clarke
Delap

Injuries, bad form etc have just stopped that team being rolled out. I think for Leif and Greaves particular the midfield has been quite a big issue. I feel like there is a real lack of cover defensively there. Love Cajuste as player but his partner ideally needs to be someone who can get all over the pitch, feel like we have really missed that and its left lots of the pitch exposed at times.

He's got the most chances created by a defender in the league. He would be better in a team where those chances were put away and he didn't have to defend as much or be as exposed when he's got forward.

He's great, he just can't defend. This season has shown that.

He'll have a great career but it won't be in relegation scraps.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Yes exactly. It's an impossible role being an attacking full back. Loved when you get forward and put a great cross in but criticised when you're not putting in crunching tackles on a winger at the same time. When you think of any attacking full back, they get the same criticism.

But what are these stats based on? I'd be amazed if he's created more actual chances than say Robinson for example. I think he has two assists all season. Prime example his one run and cross in the game v Wolves, commentary likely said great ball but it wasn't, it was nowhere near a blue shirt unlike Townsend's pass to Delap from same position the week before.

He's been a great pro and rarely missed a match but defensively he's never been great, his assists over the previous two seasons have been great to be fair.

If we can get a good fee I'd sell him and tighten up at the back allowing Clarke to run the wing next season.

As per my original post, he's been creating chances but we've not been able to put them away. Blaming him for that in its entirety seems incredibly harsh. We simply haven't given him many targets. It was nice Townsend had a target in Delap in that attack and it was a lovely pass but you surely aren't suggesting his delivery is better than Davis?

Here are the stats:

https://www.statmuse.com/fc/ask?q=most+chances+created+in+epl+24%2F25+for+defend

I've not checked the methodology, I'll check it at some point as time allows.

As for defending, some of that is a product of how we play so once again harsh to blame him in the entirety. He could do better in some situations but then other defenders could as well, it depends what you want in that position

I am expecting a +£20m bid for Leif this summer at which point we have and he has a decision to make. He is easily a PL squad player for an established club if not better in a stronger team, he will be a temping acquisition for a newly promoted club at a reasonable fee. I hope we keep him and get promoted then expect he’s stronger for us second time around!

Leif is stunning in his attacking wing back game, but his defending attributes are sadly not as good. Townsend is a much better defender, I feel, but he can also get in a decent cross into the opponents box.

He'd work better in a five, probably doubling up with someone like Townsend

Fulham play with Bassey who is a left back essentially but plays inside Robinson is it as an example and ends up more like a centre back at times

He would have worked better as the left midfielder in a three, or even as a Left Midfielder in a 4.

But we don't play either of those formations. Other teams do, and so he will command a very good fee in the Summer, if he wants to move on.

He is a superb athlete who has got great knowhow and feet. A weak defender. For me he is a left midfielder all day long and not a left back. Had he played Infront of Townsend we would have stayed up. Although him playing left mid would negate SS and JC. Current manager may perhaps do this in a return to the top flight, but won't happen this season or next.

Assists are such a dumb way to measure a player’s contribution
You could have Arnold Muhren in midfield but if you have Oli Hawkins up front Muhren isn’t going to be getting many assists is he

He still has a few years to improve, but what has worried me about this season defensively for him is that he hasn't seemed to learn at all. Unnecessary challenge to give away a penalty at Man City and then does it again at Fulham. Numerous times he has left attacking opposition players completely free.

I think he would be better in a team that doesn't have to defend as much as we have had to this season and if we keep him and come back up I imagine he will be much better prepared for this level of football, as will a number of our players.
