Arguing with the officials. 12:22 - Apr 14 with 1528 viewshomer_123

It's always made me smile.

I mean, in all the years I've played, coached and watched football....I have never seen an official change their mind, ever.

It achieves nothing.

Isn't it more about putting pressure on the ref to try and get them to "even it up" if a similar call is made in the rest of the game?

And arguing with the 4th official who doesn't even make a decision - why would anyone waste their energy on that?

Really? You've never seen a ref give a soft foul in the centre of the pitch when players and fans have got on their back?

Some refs are more likely to go to the other way, but I have definitely seen soft fouls given.

Players are also sometimes drawing attention to holding etc by an opponent that the ref hasn't seen in the hope that they look out for it in future.

You are right - it never makes a ref change a decision once they've given it.

But it can hugely affect decisions they make afterwards. And that can work both ways - wind the ref up too much and it can work against you by him not giving you/your team decisions; on the other hand it can make him have doubts about a decision and he'll 'even it up' later.

I guess we've all seen both of these things if we've played football at any level haven;t we.

It's the getting at the 4th official that gets me. Why have a go at the official who hasn't made the decision and can't override what's happened on the field of play. Its always baffled me tbh

I was playing in a game a few years back where we had a goal disallowed for a very dubious offside. Our captain went wild and explained in detail to the ref how it was impossible anyone could've been offside in the build up. The ref then proceeded to give the goal, almost resulting in a 22 man brawl as the opposition were so furious.

I miss Sunday football.

Norwich away, mid 90's, penalty given to town, then mysteriously a random offside call nullified it after they went nuts, ball was on the spot ready to go

That’s what my mate who coaches basketball always says; you’re not arguing that call, you’re arguing for the next one.

Funny that because I distinctly remember Kevin Lynch awarding Town a penalty against Norwich at Carrot Rd and then changing his mind after their players had surrounded him.

I was watching the Lazio v ROma game yesterday evening and Guendozi (ex-arsenal nutter) was arguing with the ref about a goal line technology given goal (btw it was way over the line!) haha

we have var for a few years now , still players throw their arms up appealing for offside. instead of trying to get back to make a tackle or cutting the cross out

Not so.

When my Dad was in the nick, he said they had a linesman called Mr Barraclough who would constantly change his mind about whose throw in it was if you told him he'd got it wrong. His arm nearly fell off from so much swinging it around.

It’s *never* about changing the decision in question, it’s about applying pressure, getting in the ref’s head and hoping it influences the *next* decision.

I’ve seen teams at local level who were absolute masters of that and the professional game is no different in that respect.

Plus players will know exactly what they can or cannot get away with each particular official.

I bet if a ref was consistent with issuing yellow cards for arguing with them, very few players will even bother.
