So your suggesting our recruitment in those areas was even worse than the £8m we’ve completely wasted on Muric?

I haven't done the research you have, so how have you arrived at the fact he's cost us treble the points he's saved? Are you including every game we've lost where he's played or just specifically where he is deemed to have been at fault and we've lost or drawn where we could/should've won?? How does that compare with the games we've one or drawn with him playing? The biggest blunder was of course Bournmouth at home. Just a disastrous bit of keeping for their first, but I'm genuinely intrigued at the workings, unless it's just a hunch based on your bias against him? You may be right BTW as he hasn't been great, but treble the points? I don't know.

Our last three relegations are almost on 18:35 - Apr 19 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | He was absolutely the reason we lost crucial points when we were very much in touch though. Some very good performances were wasted. If a striker missed penalties in the last minute time after time no one would let them off the hook. |
Those errors were poor, but he had also been instrumental in us gaining points and being in touch in a number of games. A lot of what good keepers do is not noticed until it goes wrong. The key for me is that results and defensive performances have not been much better with Muric out of the team, in fact just looking at goals conceded: - With Muric (pl games only) we conceded 35 goals in 19 games - avg of 1.84 goals per game conceded. - Without Muric (pl games only) we have conceded 32 goals in only 13 games - avg of 2.46. Statistically that is a big shift, obviously there will be other factors with a changing defence but for me the things that Muric did well outweighed his mistakes - including his shot stopping and his aerial ability. As for your statement that he cost us points when we were in touch, when he was dropped we were 3 points off 17th, fourteen games later we find ourselves 14 points off, so a net shift of -11 points and even worse a gd change of -17 to -34 in only 75% more games. That suggests to me while Muric made some obvious errors, he had made up for those in games he kept us in and it is the team as a defensive unit which has proven too costly. Walton was not much better than Muric when he came in for his handful of games and while I do think Palmer has done well, again he has not been faultless and has conceded goals i would have expected him to save. Basically our defence has been problematic for the last 2+ years, but we managed to score ourselves out of trouble in the Championship. In the Championship promotion season we conceded 57 goals - the last time a side got promoted automatically while conceding more than 55 goals was 2018/19 (Norwich on 57 ironically) and before that you have to go back to 2010/11 (weirdly Norwich again on 58). in summary while Muric made some costly and public errors, he is not the calamity and significant reason for relegation, and without sorting that deep rooted defensive issue we will never establish ourselves in the top flight. Our last three relegations are almost on 17:16 - Apr 19 by bsw72 | How very unoriginal, the chap has only played twice for us in 2025 yet still gets singled out, ignoring the fact that 57% of our points have come with him in the side, and 67% of our clean sheets. He was not perfect but was unfairly singled out for his errors - goalkeepers make an easy target for people looking for scapegoats I guess. I agree the GK is important, but I doubt Zoff, Buffon or Peter Schmeichel would have been good enough to save this team from relegation. |
I doubt Zoff, Buffon or Peter Schmeichel went all game without ever uttering a word of comunication with the rest of their teams our defence was disjointed anyway but he increased the chaos, and nervous players who've lost confidence in their keeper are always going to become even more error prone. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

As surprised as i am to see yourself and others frothing at the opportunity to have another pile-on, this post is clearly saying all our relegation seasons have been defined by a muddled goalkeeping position. It isn't a post 'slagging' Muric off just highlighting that the GK position has been a negative focus this season.

Sereni was an excellent keeper. Marshall was absolutely rubbish.

I don't think we can definitively say that though can we? BSW72 posted a very helpful post about the stats earlier in the thread. Whilst you have every right to dislike him and blame him for our woes, I'm not so sure that it stacks up. I guess this thread will go the way of most other Muric threads. Some will be a little more objective in their thoughts/critique. Others will look on in incredulity that some supporters simply cannot accept we are down solely because of Muric.

It’s not really a case of defending Muric, but more of the case that other players have been guilty of bad mistakes. But not subject to the same criticism as him.

Muric is very quiet on the field. Perhaps he is not confident with his spoken English. Whilst out injured would some English lessons during his rehab give him the confidence to be louder and more assertive with his defenders in his penalty area?

Imagine how good Muric would be back in the day when keepers didn't have to be great with the ball at their feet or even be asked to play as a last defender....because every other aspect of his game is pretty much as good you'd want..

I suspect we've seen the last of him. He'll probably go out on loan once he's fit in the summer, in a parallel to the last relegation season with Sereni. Actually, you could similarly compare Sixto and Cajuste and Liam Delap and Marcus Bent, come to think of it.

Fantasy thinking that imo. Muric conceded 5 or 6 terribly soft goals and still has a better save record than Palmer, much better than Walton. Remove all his disasters, keep everything else, and Muric becomes one of the better keepers in the league. Recapping our lost points: 1 against City? Two bad errors in the 4-1 loss. They mauled us after we scored and then coasted through the second half; one of their easiest wins of the seasons probably. 2 or 3 against Bournemouth? They dominated us all second half and scored again ten minutes later, so it would be optimistic to claim he cost us the win. 1 against Brentford, definitely. He was in credit that game before the howler. 3 against Southampton, probably. Good PL keepers would expect to save both efforts. Hard to know for sure if Palmer would have. I can't think of any others. Offsetting the lost points, he was the highest rated player in the Brighton draw and Tottenham win. He also had a useful knack of saving one-on-ones in our early season draws. Summarising, 9-10 more points would have required the best keeper on the planet. We could say the same about having a healthy Rodri in midfield or last season's Haaland up front, and even then it wouldn't have been enough. Our situation is no single player's fault. Realistically, Palmer from the start may have earned us 3-6 more.

The key part of your post is “Nowadays every team swaps their goalie for the cup games.” It wasn’t the case in 2001/02. Don’t forget that Sereni had had a shocker in the previous game at Charlton, so the optics of him coming to the manager and saying, “I don’t want to play in this game” didn’t help him.

I think the question is how much the stats are relatively positive because of Muric or despite of him. He played over a period where we had more joy in surprising teams, fewer injuries and perhaps a degree of confidence that we had a chance of getting out of it. Palmer came in as that was starting to fade. The disastrous result against Brighton had taken hold - for some reason, that seems to have been the one which drained belief - and we were struggling as a unit. We could and should have had more points on the board earlier in the season. And Muric, for all his positives, was a key reason why we didn't.

Our last three relegations are almost on 12:47 - Apr 19 by Rimsy | I said after half a dozen games, if there's one player to single handedly get us relegated, it's Muric. Should have been replaced much sooner. A poor keeper totally undermines the defence. |
The majority of Muric mistakes have been with his feet. As a result of being asked to do much more with them earlier in the season than either Walton or Palmer. In terms of actual goalkeeping (Southampton aside) he was very good and definitely looked like a premier league goalkeeper. I bet you wanted to keep Hladky?

You have to wonder why he came to us, both from his and our perspective, if he’s not that good/confident with his feet. It was the style and tactic that we had built so much of our success on. But his brain was usually as much at fault as his feet. There was more than just Southampton, I’d add Bournemouth, Brentford, West Ham, to name a few. If you watch highlights, his positioning is interesting and communication with his defence is lacking.
