The FA have banned trans women from women’s football 11:30 - May 1 with 5921 views | Swansea_Blue | Which I suppose is effectively a ban from all football for any that have gone through any form of conversion therapy. No mention of a position on trans men though. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cz01z4rdx4no Hmm, Football or General? [Post edited 1 May 11:30]

It’s not clear, although that BBC piece is changing by the minute so maybe they’ll clarify or add a link to the new rules at some point. I suppose I could google it, but I’m supposed to be clearing out the garage!

Yes, I suspect so. It’s certainly a toxic issue (unnecessarily so imo) that must have been causing some sporting bodies some real headaches. They dealt with it reasonably sensibly in elite swimming by introducing an open category where any physical advantage from going through puberty as a male couldn’t then be exploited by trans women competing in women’s events. That approach works in swimming though as you can have multiple categories competing in one race. That wouldn’t work for team sports. Athletics could have done that, but they seemed to tie themself up in knots a bit. This makes it a lot easier for them, but I’m not sure where it leaves trans women.

I think in all sports the mens category is generally an open category, it is through junior sports but basically women can't compete after men have been through puberty in anything that is based on physicality

The FA have banned trans women from women’s football on 12:25 - May 1 with 2803 views | Basuco | This is a very difficult one. But, is there any difference between a female taking testosterone as a performance enhancing drug, to a male that has developed as a man when his body naturally produced testosterone then after a number of years supressed testosterone and transition to female? Effectively banning a trans female from competing in the sport they love and may be quite good at, is not great, but is there a fair way of a allowing it to happen? Maybe allowing them to compete if they transitioned to female before puberty? I can not begin to imagine what it must be like to be trapped in a body you do not identify as, let alone have talent in a sport that you love but cannot now compete in. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

we're all 'trapped in' our bodies. it's pretty much how being alive works.

You don't really understand or care about trans issues, we get it, but is there really a need to be such a bell about it?

“ taking testosterone as a performance enhancing drug” Isn’t that illegal?

Yes, my point is a trans female would gain a physical advantage by training and developing as a biological male, just supressing it on transition would not take away the benefit of the years with it naturally in their body. I am just trying to find a logical reason for the FA decision which is to make fair competition for all athletes, which is not easy.

Do 'Trans' football teams/leagues exist? Excuse my ignorance but would that be an alternative way forward to promote further inclusivity in football? I may be contradicting myself here though if the individuals feel as though the main point is that they are being robbed of the opportunity to represent themselves at fooball, within their chosen gender group. Whether there would be enough demand or the players would feel comfortable could be an issue.

I doubt it given only 28 transgender women are currently registered / playing football at any adult level in England.

I think they said on SSN only about 30 transwomen in the women's game so doubt there is enough to do so

that's enough for 2 teams. They can have a little league where they play each other 20 times a season.

Thanks Joe, I’ve not got experience of lots of ground roots level sports, so that’s good to hear there are often opportunities. It’s sounding like far from putting a line under this debate, the recent ruling could have kicked off years of various legal challenges. So this issue won’t be going away any time soon. The FA seems to be reacting fairly quickly, so it’ll be interesting to see where this all goes in future.

It's only something that could have been solved politically, rather than through the courts - I think it has freed up a lot of authorities to do what they and the vast majority of the population wanted to do without fear of legal challenges and the like which is generally a good thing but will obviously be issues along the way
