Anyone got that sort of feeling that we won't go up next season yet? 18:03 - May 8 with 5335 viewsWarkystache

I mean, we should, with that squad, the money and the ability to purchase better. I just worry about our defence. Bloody dodgy at times. Perhaps I'm worrying unnecessarily?

Couldn’t agree with this more. It worries me people having an expectation that we should come back up. Aside from maybe the promotion season in league one, our recent success has come from punching above our weight so I really hope belief doesn’t turn to arrogance or entitlement.

Look at Luton for example. They gave the PL a really good go and were comparable to us in many ways.

Luton weren't great in the Championship and didn't strengthen their squad sufficiently. I'm not sure they are really comparable to us. Why look at Luton when you can look at Burnley and Sheffield United, or Leeds, Leicester, and Saints last year? 5 of the last 6 clubs relegated out of the Prem have either gone up or finished third in the season following relegation. There's no reason to think we shouldn't be challenging, it's not arrogant to say we have an advantage over most Championship sides and should be amongst the favourites to go up.

Unfortunately you can't just turn up with a decent squad and expect everything to happen without a lot of effort. Another thing, or two things really, are injuries and what our midfield will look like with no Phillips, Cajuste possibly, Loungo and with Morsy more a bit part player than a regular.
Then of course you have the enigma of Taylor who has had long enough to establish himself but hasn't managed to.
To a large extent who we get in will depend on how we do and of course those that move on.

Were you as worried when people were saying we ‘should be relegated’ this season?

Yes, anyone saying ‘we should be relegated’, equally as embarrassing.

A good start will be vital.

Which means a kind set of early fixtures would be helpful.

Wrexham (Away)

Norwich (Home)

Birmingham (Away)

Leicester (Home)

Would be about as unpleasant as it could get for us.

I can really see one of the relegated Prem teams being given Wrexham away, for the hype, given that the Championship kicks off a week before the Premier League:

"Is this the biggest game in World Football this weekend? It's certainly the one with the largest global interest!" Etc.

What we want are a Home game against a 24/25 lower mid-table side to start, followed by a reasonably short away trip, and a game against one of the Play Off losers under lights at Portman Road, to give us chance to find a rhythm and guage ourselves against what we should expect for the season ahead.

There you go: some fretting about things we have no control over!

I feel similarly to how I did going into the 23/24 season really: absolutely no idea how it may go in a new division. Only this time we are approaching it from above rather than below. I'm fearful of expecting too much; that start in 23/24 was completely insane and I do worry people may expect the same again and if it doesn't happen the despair (maybe a bit too strong a word) will set in quickly.

We should finish top 6 regardless but this is Ipswich we're talking about, we don't tend to do straightforward.

Luton got up through the play offs and spent next to nothing comparatively playing a very distinct direct style. I don't see the similarities at all.

As for punching above our weight, when you have an inbuilt advantage of a better squad than 95% of the division and a 45m parachute payment this is now not the same club as our L1 days.

Which is why it was so important to go up even if we've come up short - promotion has totally transformed our club.

We may not come back up - we might finish 3rd and miss out on an off-day in the playoffs, but anything less than 3rd and it will have been a poor season.

On paper it looks like a much weaker league next year. Leicester and Southampton will need new managers and probably a huge squad rebuild. Outside of that it’s hard to see anyone with ‘near championship quality’. If Sheff Utd don’t win the playoffs I think they’ll be selling due to their substantial debt.

If I was to bet I'd say we would be top six and probably miss out in the PO's. Which would pretty much mean we'd have plenty of interest for most of the season. Not all bad.
I'm thinking we might have to learn how to win again and it might take a while. We've had positive momentum, think we're going back down with negative momentum and it must affect the players somehow.

Look at the negative momentum Sheffield United and Burnley had and they've both finished top 3 by a mile.

Can't really argue with that, except that Luton dropped like a stone. I think we're more Burnley/ Sheff U than Luton, but I still think we might need time to find our feet and I'm steeling myself for an iffy first 2-3 months. The Championship is still an incredibly tough league and there's no stone-clad formula that relegated teams with parachute payments get top 3 status.
We don't even know yet who's staying or going. Or how good we'll be in the transfer market.

Luton really are an outlier though, 5 of the last 6 relegated sides have done incredibly well, before that Burnley, Luton, Fulham, and Bournemouth all won promotion in their first or second season in the Championship. Burnley signed or lost over 40 players in the summer and brought in a new manager and they've just got 100 points. Even if we see massive turnover and lose McKenna, we should still be in a position to challenge.

We will get 100 points, so if we don't well done to the other two,

A top two finish and 100+ points is my cautious but optimistic prediction... assuming Kieran is still with us, of course.

I cannot understand the focus on Luton.

Why not focus on five other relegated teams in the past couple of years?

But for ourselves being the fly in the ointment, Leeds, Leicester and Saints were a country mile better than the rest. This season, SU and Burnley. Miles better and I suspect Sheffield will beat Sunderland too.

I’ve seen a few Championship games recently including last night’s. Coventry - played neatly, pass the ball nicely, got some good players. But they are so far off the top teams they need binoculars. Sunderland? Organised and have some good young players and I can see why they’ve had a good season. But they are limited. The rest? Derby, B’burn, Bristol City, Norwich? We shouldn’t fear anyone.

As long as we strengthen that midfield and don’t lose too many of the better players we will be fine. Unlike last season, we know what the standard is and what it takes to win.

Maybe I am being over confident but I’m actually super confident about next year

As long as we strengthen in the middle of the park and find a striker I think we really should be winning the league or at least going very very close :)

Lecester will be getting hammered with point deductions - think Southampton will struggle. Really do hope Sheffield united go up as none of the current championship old timers scare me in the slightest

Maybe I’m too confident :)

No, I tend to agree. If we start off poorly next season after this campaign that concerns me as we have got in the habit of losing games. Reading some of the comments, it’s like it’s going to be a walk in the park. I just feel it will be a lot tougher than many are anticipating. The first 10 games will give a good indication of where we are. Just feel there’s a lot of issues that will have an impact on us next season, but the start will be crucial.

I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a top six finish and a home win over Norwich.

130M net spend, Leeds and Burnley promoted, parachute money, Delap (and likely Omari) brining in 50-60M more after payouts. Bang average championship. Owners will be expecting nothing less than a top 2 finish.
