Does Ipswich need a Northern by-pass ? on 13:45 - May 21 by longtimefan
Where's the "Yes - as long as NIMBY" option
Didn’t want to get into that debate!!!
Just saw that one MP said the majority of his constituents said they were against it. I asssume they were all in areas that may be affected by one of the routes. Ipswich desperately needs a by-pass and I’m amazed that those in charge can keep ignoring that fact!!

Central Suffolk and North Ipswich which includes where all the no lobby are based
I note having driven through this area recently that they are also against Westerfield Quarry, whatever that is
When one of them waded in on an Ipswich Star post, I remarked that perhaps a Northern Bypass would ease all the HGV traffic for that Quarry, they didn't respond bless them
Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I did a lot of driving in Central Suffolk last year but am based in Cambridgeshire. Every time I drove around I wondered how B roads in Cambs were main A roads in Suffolk. It really feels like 1958 in places.
The alternative would be a really good tram system, but that's less likely than us winning the Premier League this year....

There's a core of people that will just oppose any infrastructure or progress of any kind just because they want everyone to live in a dark age hell, so long as that person is still unaffected.
No to Sizewell No to Pylons No to the quarry No to the bypass No to BT expansion No to a new big Tesco
Sure a few are probably just worried about their view or house price which is understandable, but shouldn't be enough to prevent vital infrastructure. But the ideological eco-warrior objectors that move around from project to project demanding an end to any human progress should be dropped into a meat grinder.
The problem with Ipswich is Felixstowe. If that damn port didn't exist Ipswich would be a tranquil backwater. If you don't know where Whitehaven, Barnstaple and Pwlheli are then I don't blame you. There's nothing to see there. So yes, Ipswich needs a northern by-pass because Felixstowe is the 'Gateway to the World' for Containers.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Alternatively people are happy with their lives then someone comes along, plants a sizewell or tesco or fecking great warehouse in the back of their garden and fecks it all up.
Chap I know has lived all his life in his family home in a lovely spot in Suffolk and there are now plans to practically surround his home with solar panels.
Alright we need green energy so we can sit on our computers titting about on TWTD without burning up the planet, but he is paying a very heavy price for it.

We need a northern bypass but let’s face it, we probably won’t get one and much of this IMHO is because we don’t have city status - which is another thing we should have.
I’m all for major development of Ipswich but let’s be honest, we wouldn’t like it if our own particular area was going to be massively affected.
Although, what does make me tickle is that if the bridge is shut and I have to go to Norwich I will cut through loads of village places to get to the A140. Many other people do the same and often there is a convoy of us driving past cottages with big signs in there garden saying “No to the northern bypass”
I always find this amusing as if there was a northern bypass I wouldn’t be stuck outside their cottage.

While we could do with a Northern by pass not sure the A12, between seven hills & park and ride, could cope with the additional traffic.

I'm not sure what you are getting at PB
The report you link shows the bypass going where my line is. Seven Hills is to the south and is irrelevant
What am I missing?
The article shows multiple route options. Any northern bypass would come into its own when the Bridge is out of action. The A12 from Park & Ride, down to seven hills, wouldn’t cope.

It would cope a whole lot better that Heath Rd and ColchesterRd.

Might be slow when the bridge is out, but that's better than not being able to get through at all and gridlocking the whole town.
When the bridge / A14 is not shut, i.e. 99% of the time it will relieve Valley Rd / Colchester Rd which is still officially the bypass despite being completed in 1932

It fairly obviously is needed, but the unfortunate fact is that it is going to smash through the middle of some lovely villages (whichever route is taken) and for those people it doesn’t really lead to much improvement because there is a connection already to Ipswich/Woodbridge via the country lanes.
Think the pros outweigh the cons but I’d 100% be against it if I lived in Hasketon, Bealings, Henley or anywhere that might be impacted by years of work and an A road being plonked on my doorstep.

We need a monorail.

Not since Maersk pulled out.
Maersk pulling their Asian service from Felixstowe won’t change too much in terms of road traffic. MSC have already increased their traffic into Felixstowe as I’m sure other lines will too.
Objectively speaking I’d be interested to see why people have stated no as it’s very clear we need one. Whether people want one or if we get one is a whole other story.
