I always thought he played well in the few games that we saw of him. Can’t blame him for wanting out if he’s not going to feature much again.

Woolfy off? on 16:27 - May 26 with 4403 views | Grumpy_Old_Man | He looked desolate on the lap, kept away from the squad. Obvious disappointment. Far too good to be sat on the bench for another season unless KM goes with O'Shea, Woolf and Greaves. There will be offers I'm sure.

I noticed he seemed disconnected from the squad, until Broadhead went over to him. OIbviously he was concentrating on his children, but it came across as deeper than that too. I said at the time I didn't get why he signed a new contract, as it was clear he was only seen as back up by McKenna. The only thing I can think of is he wanted to re-pay the club, and give us the chance of making money of him which we can invest in full.

If it’s reliant on O’Shea leaving, I wouldn’t say that’s “very unlikely”. He’s proven he’s more than good enough for Championship level (him and Greaves are a top 6 pairing on paper), with £20m in the bank from O’Shea to invest elsewhere.

Woolfy off? on 16:39 - May 26 with 4212 views | kpblues | Shame because to me O'Shea and Greaves were not upgrades on Woolfy and Burgess although they were ok players. Should have got more minutes and would wonder why he would stick around.

Woolfy off? on 16:59 - May 26 with 3974 views | ParisBlue | In my eyes at least we've always looked better with Woolfy at the back. He may not be the quickest, but he's decent in the air, and steps forward better than our other defenders. Started the season well but immediately replaced once O'Shea arrived. Should have played more, but I get a feeling there's something KM isn't 100% sure about, even in 23/24 he got dropped to the bench a few times.

I thought he played well. No bad mistakes. And better on the ball than the rest. Which is significant. Teams quite happily leave O Shea and Greaves on the ball, rather than pressing them, because they know its not going anywhere effective.

His kids (or his daughter at least) were running loose kicking balls around so he was following and playing with them. Very possible he was distracted by that and hadn't noticed everyone had begun to congregate in the corner.

If O’Shea’s sold, we’ll replace him. And you’d imagine his replacement would be a first XI player… ahead of Woolfy. That’s the sad reality.

He didn't even join the group when Broadhead went over to him, which I saw as an attempt to integrate him. Others had kids running around yet still came across as part of the whole. This isn't meant as a criticism of Woolfy. I just think he did seem separated from everyone else, with only Broadhead making an effort to communicate with him.

Seems unlikely he would deliberately, and publicly, snub his teammates and coaches though, no?

No, I don't think it would be deliberate. Could be subconciously feeling separate from the group, rather than conciously. It's something which stood out to me yesterday, and others have highlighted it. And probably something which is easier to notice after a bad season than a good one. Also, Woolfy's message isn't exactly in line with the club's. The club's is, understandably and correctly, the journey is not over. Woolfy's sounded more of an ending.

Woolfy off? on 08:02 - May 28 with 2009 views | Blue_Heath | I really hope not but you can't blame him, limited game time and at his age should be playing every week. As I feared there may be a huge turnover of staff this summer. It already appears to be starting in the backroom before we get to the players. That said an opportunity to refresh but would be really sad to see Woolfy go, think he deserved more game time this season and he should have been part of a 3 man central defence.

I get the impression Woolfy is a sociable sort of chap and this is out of the ordinary for him and perhaps nothing to read into it As someone has already said probably distracted by his children and quite righty so …he was having a moment with them

Woolfy off? on 08:39 - May 28 with 1678 views | Herbivore | I think he's more pissed than many of our players that we've not succeeded this season, he made some quite critical comments about how we'd not been good enough mentally over the season. I imagine he's frustrated at having such limited game time having generally played well when he has been given a chance. He's at an age where he doesn't want to be playing 10 games a season, he needs to be first choice somewhere and he'll rightly feel he's good enough to be. O'Shea has been fine but I still feel we look a better team when Woolf plays, he is SO much better on the ball than our other CBs and so much calmer as well and we've needed more of that across the season. There's obviously something there McKenna sees that means he doesn't trust him to be a regular starter in the Prem so it might be that Woolf feels it's time to move on.

Similarly to the goalkeeping situation, it will be important to have a ball-playing defender next season and as you say, he is our best option for that (Burgess improved massively with that as well in our promotion campaign) I wouldn't blame him for moving on as he clearly isn't seen as a starter and he needs to play. However, if he does go then it would be important to replace him with someone that has similar qualities and I wouldn't imagine that ball-playing defenders are the cheapest in this age of 'Pep' ball.

Burgess' curved ball down the line for Davis or into the inside left channel for Hirst is a very lovely thing, he has massively improved on the ball. I think what Woolf brings is different, he can play that risky 10 yard pass that breaks the press and opens things up for us, or he can break the press himself and carry us 20 yards up the pitch. He's really our only CB capable of doing that.
