Help with cars 09:49 - May 28 with 2376 viewswiganblue

Hi All

So unfortunately my car has broken beyond repair so I find myself looking for a new car. I drove a manual SUV, diesel. I'm not a petrol head, so tend to look at cars with decent MPG with sensors, cruise control and has to have DAB.

Do I buy what I know being this or should I be considering petrol hybrid?

It seems car manufacturers are moving away from diesel and indeed manual cars, so is it best to future proof myself if I decide to sell later down the line?

I've narrowed it down to Honda or Kia and I'm considering a H-RV, Civic or Niro, or is there something else I should consider? I prefer a raised ride as I do a lot of countryside driving but something about the civic "look" on the shape from 2019 onwards has caught my eye!

I think a petrol hybrid is a sensible way of hedging your bets. We have had Hondas for years; they have a good reputation for reliability, if a little expensive. We have recently trashed Mrs Radlett's old diesel CRV; she looked at the HRV but didn't think the boot was big enough, so she went for another CRV.
I have had a Civic for years & it's a very different car to drive, pleasantly unlike the tank-like CRV. Only issue is that the electronics haven't been great.

My recommendation is that you try Nigel Havers Car Sales Ltd, they are based in Debach, and they currently have an old Morris Ital "J"-reg in stock which might be of interest. It was previously owned by Francis De La Tour.

Frances De La Tour.

You are allowing your standards to slip!

Frank Thornton and Geoffrey Palmer would be most disappointed.

Probably need a bit more info on budget, usage etc

For what its worth, We've got a 2010 civic diesel, that has done 140k miles, and is still brilliant... been the best car we've had for reliability etc. Not that exciting, but just works, all the time.

I've also got a 2010 Mazda MX5 ( 2l petrol), which has also been fantastic. Having had VWs, Fords, and french cars in the past, I've been blown away by how easy owning a japanese car is.... so would definitely be heading that way again in the future.

I'm not sure of what to buy next, which is why I'm currently holding onto my two old cars whilst I can. I may go electric with one of them next time, but also , still waiting to see how second hand EVs hold up over time.

It's the same model which Jack Watling once owned.

I like the Rover Vitesse Fastback. Apart from the walnut and leather interior, which really does give it luxury car status, what impressed me most was the overall economy. I mean, 38.4 miles to the gallon at a constant 56 miles per hour, I think makes it a class leader.

It was the misspelling of Frances' name that I was pulling you up on, not the provenance of the Ital.

Granted, Nicholas Smith might have corrected you with a more kindly air, but the instincts of Thornton and Palmer are probably going to be more helpful to you going forward in your quest to sustain the memory of our Light Entertainment Cultural Heritage.

Jap cars are brilliantly engineered. Mrs C has a six year old Toyota Yaris and like the many Toyota's, a Mazda and a couple of Civics before it, nothing has gone wrong.

Engineering wise, it just feels less fragile than my new Audi A3 - which I adore for different reasons despite my suspicions.

As long as they’ve been serviced, I’d always recommend cars from the land of the rising sun.

Electric? Not for me. But it’ll be the only option one day thanks to rolling eyes Milliband. The technology is improving which won’t do second hand values any favours.

Echoing a few on Japanese cars. I have a Nissan Quashqai, 2013 model. Its got nearly 150k milage on it, I've personally put on 115k of that in 8 years. It's been a fantastic car. Only once failed a MOT, which was due to a blown bulb. Other than that it's been very good indeed. I haven't treated it particularly well, rarely get serviced but get all works done straight away if needed.

Over 40 to the gallon, petrol, very nice

Japanese. Land of Nippon, meatball flag, did a great Olympics and had one of the best Bond cars (a specially cut down Toyota 200GT), wagamamas, Shogun etc. Ok I know most are made in other places (Yaris is made in France, I believe), but they’re made to a high standard mechanically, electronically, electrically even if the interiors can be a bit meh.

Edit: they also made one of the best fighters of WW2 (A6M Zero), reconnaissance aircraft (Ki46 Dinah) and flying boat (H8K Emily)

I have a Ford Kuga 2 Litre Diesel. I was lucky enough to get this as it had everything I wanted on it as it had leather seats,is automatic, with an auto tailgate and a scenic roof. It is comfortable and whilst not hugely economical (31 m.p.g.) you can get a 1.5 Litre version although I personally have my doubts this is powerful enough for a vehicle of this size.
The sound system is good and although mine doesn't have a Sat Nav or reversing camera you can get them with both.It also has auto wipers and LED daytime lights.
Although petrol and diesel cars should stop production in 2030 (unless it's been altered) you can add another 15 to 20 years on top of that before they disappear and even then a dare say that vintage/classic cars will still be about.

I run a Fleet of 600 cars which do 20,000+ miles a year - the answer to any car buying question is - Toyota

If you need luggage space; Corolla Touring Sports
Want a big saloon; Camry
Don't mind small or looking like a minicab driver; Prius (especially the new one)
SUV; RAV4

Toyota's do not breakdown unless their human keeper is a complete fckwit.
We had one that managed to do 50,000 miles between services without skipping a rev - marvelous vehicles

Out of what you've specified; don't know much about Hondas, but youngest daughter has 2019 Civic which is really nice and roomy
Kia Niro is a fine vehicle, but avoid pre2022, issues with wiring loom and it takes ages for the replacement loom to arrive.

Wife has had Prius and RAV4 hybrids as the family wagon for the last 12 years and I endorse what you say. Solid, reliable and economical and drive okay.

I was in a very similar position to you. My old Honda Civic of 20+ years died towards the end of last year. I went down the petrol hybrid route and settled on a Kia Niro. Really happy with it, great mpg and the other things you are after.

Two bits of advice:

Message Newky - he's knows his sh1t and will give you an informed opinion.

If buying second hand do your homework on possible issues with said car and if possible take someone who knows their sh1t along with you to check it out. Even more important if your choice of car has known issues and/or is more than low mileage.

The pick ups are mentally reliable - the one that Clarkson tried to kill and couldn't (Dropped it from a height, set it on fire, drowned it etc.)

When in Liberia we had some - the roads are largely mud baths out there - some had done 300k Km - and whilst they were battered to fck, they all kept on going.

Proper potholes in West Africa too - where the car in front goes out of sight it's so deep :-) Most aid agencies used them there - for a reason. Indestructible.

Means nowt in UK mind, cos our roads are far more accommodating. thankfully.
