No Smoking Ban 29th May 2001 14:18
The ban on smoking in the upper tier of the South Stand is to be lifted. Up to now smoking has not been allowed in the new tier, but the club is allowing smokers the chance to puff away to their hearts' content during the new season. 1

The pre-smoking ban world seems a long way away.

Obviously today, there's just an inordinate number of people who need a sh1t at half-time.....

I first started going along to PR as a kid in about 1993 / 1994. Bloke a couple of seats along from me used to smoke like a chimney during the game and I remember finding it gross when it wafted in my direction, but that was pretty normal then and just the way it was. I've never had a problem with it at half time etc or in a designated area, that's no different to being out in the street really. I wouldn't have much of an issue with it being allowed in an open concourse like at the Valley or something, even as a non smoker.

I find it hard to imagine people ever smoked inside an office, that blows my mind. Or on a plane. Smoking and non smoking sections in restaurants, how did that even work?

Cigar smoke was one of the smells I remember from first going to football in the late seventies and early eighties.

I remember when I was doing some work on the Premier League survey about 30 years ago that the most widespread complaint fans had was other people's smoke.

Smoking in the cinema was crazy too. I remember there being a layer of cigarette smoke just hanging there above the audience. Different world today and largely cigarette smoke free thankfully!

Yes, still around. Met him for a drink with a couple of other friends a month or so ago. Not sue whether he's still writing the Town-related poetry though.

Please forgive me, but do the rules differ abroad? I remember going to Vienna back in 2018, and going to a pub before taking in an Austria Wien game and everyone was smoking in there. They then had a small room off to one side which was probably no bigger than 12ft x 12ft which was classed as the non smoking part of the place.

I raise you the cellar bar in the Albion Mills, eye-bleedingly smoky. Ironically, eventually you had to go out to smoke as there was so much smoke in there matches wouldn't light.

I've seen people smoking at pre-season games in Germany and Austria in recent seasons. Whether they were supposed to be is another question.

I think they do, or maybe the enforcement of them does. I want to say most European countries now have laws against smoking inside public areas but some are definitely softer e.g. have designated areas within them.

At the Euro's in 2016 there was a lot of smoking in the stands. I find it hard to believe it was allowed in France in 2016, but maybe the security just couldn't be bothered to deal with loads of drunk football fans having a puff.

Each country is different and in the US different states mean different rules. I go to Vegas each year and smoking is allowed in casinos and indoors. Although do not notice it too much because of the vast size of them.

It worked the same way that face masks during covid worked whenever you stood up at the restaurant/pub but somehow weren’t necessary when you sat down at the table.

I remember having a ciggy in the Cobbold back in the day. Seems weird now. I dont even smoke anymore anyway.

It used to be a bit of a ritual of mine that I would light up a ciggie if we were awarded a penalty. That coincided with Tommy Miller's run of converted pens too. The ciggie definitely contributed to that.

Like aeroplanes, restaurants tried to designate certain areas smoking or non-smoking but from my experience, the smoke used to waft across to the non-smokers like me. And you would get the smokers (like my late mother)who would sit with you in the non-smoking area & gobble down their main course so that they could sneak off for an in-betweenie.

Smokers are a dying breed these days.... 2001, was much better than 2021. Miss the 80s music upstairs in pals on a Saturday, the rock night at khartouche on a Monday, branigans Tuesday...
Good times, great oldies.

Also of note: Phil’s upbeat carefree tone. “Puff away to their heart’s content.”

It seems almost unthinkable now that smoking at footy or indeed the pub was acceptable and considered normal. Go home after a night out stinking of smoke because that’s just the way it was.

Still common half the world over.

So in Germany there are what is basically smoking pubs. Visited the Hartz mountains and one pub in the town was the smoking one where you could smoke inside.

Others you could smoke outside.

We ended up in the smoking pub (as non smokers) as it was the most lively pub, all a bit bizarre tbh

At Portman Road night matches in the distant past you could look towards the darkness of the opposite stand and see the sparkling glare of scores of cigarettes. It was a bit like mobiles now at a music concert.
