What really shows the fact that the thought that has gone in to Millibands Net Zero is badly thought out are events in the world today such as Israel and Iran where oil prices are now $10 a barrel higher meaning according to those in the know could mean another 7p per litre, not much you may think but that also adds to transport costs of goods. Whilst I am not saying the world shouldn't be aiming to lower emissions globally ( many countries aren't) the pace at which Milliband is trying to get us there is crazy. At a time when we are paying higher prices than is necessary because big companies are shutting down or reducing production in the North sea and new fields prevented by government policy it completely goes against the likes of the US where fracking and Trumps policy of "Drill Baby drill" is the total opposite of Little Ole Britain.

It has already been explained to you multiple times that the reason we pay so much is that our electricity costs are essentially pegged to the very high cost of gas, despite renewables being much cheaper.
Even if we sold off the North Sea oil, it would be to private companies so it wouldn't magically make our electricity cheaper, it would just raise some money for the Government.
the volatility in the oil markets and the instability of many of the producers is more reason to go further and faster to end our archaic reliance on it. would have been far better if we'd have done it 10-15 years earlier, but we are where we are

Also, surely this is evidence that moving away from reliance on a volatile commodity like oil is a good thing? It would have been great if we'd done a Norway and set up a sovereign wealth fund and ensured we profited from North Sea oil and gas before the much needed move away from fossil fuels, but that ship has long since sailed and the notion that the UK and its citizens would be protected against global price changes if we granted more licenses in the North Sea is completely fallacious.
I agree we are kiboshing fossil fuel exploration/production in a suicidal way before effective replacements are ready and there is a lot of badly thought through policy around Net Zero.
However calling it "Miliband's Net Zero" isn't 100% fair or accurate.
Yes he was the energy minister in 2008 when the Climate Change Act was passed, with a target of 80% reduction in GHG emissions set as the target.
But it was in *2019* that the government decided to double down and make it the full 100%. Can't remember if that's May or BoJo's doing, but they are all complicit. Pretty sure it was May responsible for the truly daft legislation to ban new combustion engines by 20-whatever.

Tvvats.
I would say upping fossil fuel exploration and extraction is more suicidal, given how grave the climate crisis is. We have the technology needed to be able to move more rapidly to net zero, what we lack is the political or economic will to do it because it will be expensive in the short term.

People forget that a significant proportion of every barrel of oil doesn’t get burned off but is used in manufacturing.
Someone who has the moniker "OldFart" not caring about the climate and environment being left to the next generation just because it costs a bit more isn't a good look.

I'm torn really. On one hand I support someone wanting to try and tackle climate change, on the other hand Ed Miliband always gives me the impression of someone who hasn't got a clue what he's doing. I would be delighted if he proves me wrong.
