Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium 12:02 - Jun 23 with 1607 views | Matt_Netherlands | I know someone mentioned this this other days… Feels like attendances will take quite a hit? Especially as the women’s games seem to have quite a community feel to them.
Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium on 12:10 - Jun 23 with 1512 views | JammyDodgerrr | Honestly still think it's a shocking decision. The only tiny positive is hidden right within the article that says over the two years, we will sourcing a permanent home 'in the Ipswich area'. Reads like it won't be Portman Road and I don't really understand why we seem to be overcomplicating it. I'm sure we could get the pitch at PR to handle the extra games.

Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium on 12:11 - Jun 23 with 1509 views | pennyfathersleg | Agreed. I feel a bit disappointed, although I understand why. I’m a fairly regular attendee of the ladies games, but I doubt I will be attending now. I live in Felixstowe, so that made it handy for me to attend games, but it really was a community feel. That will be gone now. Along with the fact that it isn’t a particularly nice stadium, it’s not fun to get to and parking is horrible. What a shame.

How do they source a stadium in the Ipswich area of Championship Standard unless they pimp up somewhere like Ipswich Wanderers or build a mini stadium at the training ground?

Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium on 12:26 - Jun 23 with 1406 views | Zx1988 | Is there any reason Felixstowe couldn't continue to be used for the women's games? The club statement makes a vague reference to required standards, but doesn't elaborate further. If it's to do with league requirements I can understand it a bit better, otherwise it's incredibly harsh on Felixstowe, for whom the extra income would have been far more beneficial than for Colchester.

It doesn't meet the league standards. Likely isn't professional enough in all areas. It definitely is an enforced move which is a shame, but it happens.

That's what I was wondering.

In the plans for the training ground there was mention of a "a show pitch with covered seating" going forward, so I would assume it's that.
Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium on 12:34 - Jun 23 with 1306 views | bsw72 | Not sure - there may be a drop in those from the East Suffolk area, but I know a number of people in West Suffolk, North Essex who would have attended more ladies games if the regular location was more central. I live between Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds - it takes me over an hour to get to the current stadium in Felixstowe but only takes me 35-40 mins to get to Portman Road and will only take a similar time to get to the Colchester STadium While moving to a ground in Essex is not ideal, it does provide a venue with better facilities and an improvement on catchment for the wider suffolk region. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I’m a bit surprised we don’t already have a training facility that’s suitable. It’s long overdue.

I had heard that the club were trying to purchase the land / ‘stadium’ where Ipswich Wanderers currently play, so the training ground can stretch all the way through, with the view that the ladies can play there too. [Post edited 23 Jun 13:07]

I know they've spoken to Wanderers a lot over the last couple of seasons but don't think it's come to anything, as it stands. Not impossible it could revisited, of course.

Wonder if they’ve got plans for the Bent Lane site now that they’ve got it all back from Marcus Evans. You could build a training facility and a small stand there for use for the women and youth teams, think there’s already a decent pitch there
Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium on 14:14 - Jun 23 with 795 views | Wright1 | I am trying not to judge this too harshly before seeing how it pans out but I am disappointed by this news. Women’s games confirmed for Col U stadium on 14:33 - Jun 23 with 712 views | flykickingbybgunn | Seems to me that a fan base has been established at Felixstowe and that is now mostly going to be lost. Which is a shame. I expect there are reasons but to move it 20 odd miles to Colchester is unfortunate.

Not exactly helped by being called 'The Job Serve Stadium' is it! Sounds horribly like Job's Worth.

The main complaints I hear these days about the Colchester ground from the locals is that the terracing is so steep and there are no handrails on the stairways. Old folks find it OK going up, but quite intimidating going down. Hopefully some handrails will be installed in at least some areas before too long. I'm told by people who use it that the ground does have good and popular pre-match entertainment for kids underneath the east Stand, which is the 'family area', so presumably if there is demand that will be in use. ) The club's own car park I would think could handle everyone. If not, parking near the ground has improved a lot recently with a new car-park in the retail area just east of the ground. But as other people have said, free parking is virtually non-existent, and public transport virtually non-existent. And unlike Felixtowe there really is nothing else to see, unless half-arsed shopping malls are your thing. p.s. I guess John McGreal will be getting his old parking-space. [Post edited 23 Jun 14:48]

I think even if the pitch could handle it playing week in/week out in a 30k stadium with a crowd in the 2-3k region (but hopefully growing) wouldn't necessarily be the best. Financially having games at PR for small crowds could also costing a lot more as the number of staff required to open/run the stadium will be much higher. A lot of Prem clubs have a showcase stadium with a capacity of a few thousand for the Academy teams to play at and unless our women's supporter base grows much more quickly than anticipated then a mid-point option seems sensible.

Thanks. Fingers crossed we can drive straight up and she still finds it fun when we get in there (although, I imagine the results/performances may be less fun now we've gone up a division).

r.e. your middle paragraph, I can see that costs at Portman Road might be slightly higher, (probably even the floodlights get through a fair bit more energy.) But stewarding costs would presumably be about the same. Is the point that it's just easier to open up sections of the Colchester ground according to demand than at Portman Road? Or are the refreshment facilities kind of in the wrong place if there is a small crowd? What's the major difference?

Yes quite possibly. From memory the Col U stadium is all single tier and is probably just much better set up for serving crowds of the size the Women's team might get compared to opening bits of a couple of stands at Portman Road. Even stewarding here would seem to be a bit cheaper as you don't need any staff occupying the 'unoccupied' stands - there always seem to be a few on duty at Portman Road here - maybe in case people decide to try to get into the bits they aren't supposed to?

"the terracing is so steep and there are no handrails on the stairways." That sounds a 'mare - with somewhat poor balance now, I wouldn't relish that. Doesn't it contravene some sort of h & s requirement?

It would appear not. It is certainly hazardous for anyone a bit doddery. For ITFCW, it offers on site parking, seats and cover. I guess we will only use the main stand until crowds justify opening up more. Concourses work pretty well, and access to players for post-match signing should be at least as good as Felixstowe. There might even be some hospitality options too.
