Doing Liam Delap things against Esperance.

Great strength and neat feet for his goal.

Chelsea got a bargain there - would already pick him over Jackson, and Delap has such a high ceiling. Just a shame he joined such an unlikeable club, as I still don’t want to see Chelsea do well even with Delap there.

Shame there was a statue in goal.

Not our player so couldn’t care less. He couldn’t wait to get out of town. Talking to other clubs before the season had even finished which didn’t sit well with me, despite our season being effectively over.

By the time he started talking to other clubs (with our blessing), it was clear that we were going to be relegated.

Given that he was going to be off anyway, and the transfer fee was essentially fixed, it was in the club's interest to get it done ASAP.

We'll sign players this summer that we'll have been talking to while last season was still ongoing. So will every club in the country - it's just how it works.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

We should've pushed for more than £30m really...

Him doing that (with the club's blessing, as someone else has said) has actually done us a bit of a favour by getting the transfer sorted ASAP and not ending up as a protracted saga, meaning we can move on quickly and start looking for a replacement

No need to be so bitter

Very much in the interests of all parties. It was a when not if, so absolutely no value at all in not getting it wrapped up ASAP. Potentially saved the best part of a month or 2 wages as well which isn't to be sniffed at, considering that's almost certainly 6 figures.

I doubt Delap was on £50k+ a week so hasn't saved that much money.

However, I agree getting it done early just saves it dragging on. Probably helped they wanted him for this tournament. Its a shame he didn't go with the U21s but the club pays the bills.

And if the club simply refused to allow Delap to talk to other clubs then, that would’ve created bad feeling which would have been completely unnecessary.

I doubt he was on that sort of money, but half that isn't unrealistic. Depends how long the deal might've otherwise taken, but the fact remains the earlier it happen the more cost effective it was for us. Why wouldn't we shift £25k a week of wages at the end of May rather than pay that through until August. Not silly numbers but it all helps.

The only other factor I could think of would be PSR, getting the deal in to this years number which might've been favourable to us.

A lot on here think Liam is there ‘friend’ as he played for town, when in reality it’s just a job,he’s moved on to better things.

I think it's just a few people being conversational and taking interest in a player who very recently did well for us.

Think its just more the fact there's not much other football news to talk about and he's someone we sold 4 weeks ago to a club higher up the food chain than we've probably sold any senior player for the past 20+ years.

If anything this poster is the one coming across like Delap was their 'friend' who has upset them by moving on

Unless that's the point you're making?

Feels like everyone else is just having a footballing discussion about an ex-player which is completely normal behaviour

I'll be delighted to see him go on to do well. Surprises me some of the vitriol above.

Another point on the idea of letting him speak to clubs once relegation was confirmed and sealing a smooth sale is how professional and appealing that will be to other players in the future. We are always going to be a stepping stone, be that as a yo-yo club or an established PL side. If we don't stand in a player's way, you're more likely to attract the next Delap, Hutchinson etc.

You’re right. It’s a good job nobody ever discusses past players like Taricco, Dyer, Downes, or even Mariner and Wark. These players should be dead to us if they ever leave for another club. They did a job and left.

Oh wait, you’re wrong…

Genuine question...

If you move jobs for more money, would you say you ditched you previous employer? And would you expect to be bitter towards you for taking a bigger role at a bigger firm?

That pay cheque being paid by a bigger club able to offer him bigger opportunities.

I’m sure that if he was purely motivated by money he could easily have moved to Saudi but he didn’t.

Pleased for him. Seems a smashing lad that did his best for us. We gave him his big break and he will be forever grateful to us for that I’m sure.

I’ll for sure follow his career and I wish him all the best. Will be chuffed for him if he represents England firsts and if he wins trophies, wherever he goes.
