Paging Brandon Williams? (n/t) on 10:09 - Jun 27 with 2987 views | Chris_ITFC | More likely to sign Robbie Williams at this point. Probably a better like-for-like replacement for Axel too. We can do better. Sure, he’s free and exciting - but so is jumping off tall buildings with just a parachute. Sure, that can lead to pain, destruction and a call to the emergency services. But so can Brandon Williams.

Not been training with a club. Can you even begin to comprehend how hard it is for an elite footballer to come back from that? I don't think a L2 club would sign him right now.

It's because he was excellent at his best for us. People forget that was only for 2-3 games though and with his off field issues it's a gamble we can't afford to take.

He has been training with a club, Macclesfield, if I remember rightly. Obviously not the level he would be training or playing at but presumably there weren't many queuing up while his court case was ongoing.

Robbie Savage as a mentor has probably done him some good! I’d be quite happy to see us take another punt on him. Quality player.

He was just getting in to a groove when he was here last. By all accounts a very popular member of the squad. Loved watching him, super aggressive, amazing slide tackler and good going forward, that Preston goal was mustard. Head vs Heart

I agree. If the club could put together a contract that sufficiently protects ITFC's interests, and if BW is sufficiently happy that he's in a better place that he'd sign said contract, I'd be more than happy to see him back at ITFC. Not that any half-way decent agent would let their client anywhere near that sort of contract, however.

A half-decent agent will want to look after their client in the way that you described. They do develop a personal relationship with who they represent and if they have a shred of integrity then they’ll want the very best for them. Yes, some agents are heartless money grabbing weasels but most do have the best interests of the player at heart.

True. A very well-protected contract would probably be part and parcel of the better deals on offer; £2.5k-£5k a week at a lower-Champ/L1 club, or £10k-£15k a week at a decent club but with a well-worded contract. I suppose it would all be a question of whether BW backs himself.

Would we get the BW that ran from his own half and scored a worldie, or the one against QPR who came on and did an Ali Dia impression…

But can the club ride a valuable squad place on a player who may take half the season to get back up to pace?

He got into a groove for literally a handful of games and then around Christmas was absolutely awful . Can't remember which match it was, but was genuinely one of the worst performances i've seen in a Town shirt. His head had completely gone and he was so far off the pace it was ridiculous

Very good point. Didn’t we have all this with the likes of Chopra? When the new owners came in they talked about standards of behaviour, work in the community, role models etc. Should we revert to who cares just like the Jewell/Evans era where because a player was on the cheap we weren’t interested in why? Alternatively, save a bit of cash and scrap all the community stuff and just hand out Poundland yellow balloons. According to BBC ‘ The 24-year-old footballer was spotted driving at high speeds and erratically in an Audi A3 on the A34 near Handforth, Cheshire, on 20 August 2023. His car was then in collision with a Ford Fiesta before crashing into the central reservation. Chester Crown Court also heard Williams and his female passenger appeared to have yellow balloons in their mouths. Williams, who admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance, was sentenced to a 14-month jail term, suspended for two years.’ He could have very easily killed somebody. Man Utd effectively booted him out and I don’t think there’s been much of a stampede to sign him up. Maybe I’m wrong and his agent is beating Villa, Newcastle and co off with sticks. Signing an animal like Thatcher, Bowyer, Bullard taking the p&£# after conning a contract. Tubs of lard like Wood, Ebanks-Blake, Ellington, ankle tag man Croft: it all annoyed me and let’s face it, if last years humiliations thought us anything, it’s that the game has progressed. It’s truly professional unless you want to hoof around at Oldham. I dearly hope we’ve moved on from that, though clearly some haven’t. I guess it’s the old Norwood style cult hero thing. So this is a long winded rant saying a big fat no to Williams from me. We can do better. [Post edited 27 Jun 11:37]

IIRC it would have been Watford away, that was his last game for us I believe. Think he got hooked at half time and didn't have a great day but I don't remember it being anywhere close to being a performance deemed one of the worst ever in a town shirt, I don't even think he was that criticised for the performance at the time. I cant remember him being particularly poor in any other game barring him getting skinned for that Leeds goal when he got thrown on vs Summerville for no reason.

Small wages, short contract, and prepared to warm the bench until he proves himself and stays out of trouble.

Good memory. Clearly better than mine! Maybe a bit of exaggeration on my behalf, but getting hooked at half time isn't a good look! I feel like Clarke was also returning from an injury himself, so McKenna would rather not have given him minutes? Again, could be completely wrong. There was definitely a game where I remember thinking something wasn't right with him whatsoever, and it really stuck in my mind as the rumours starting coming out not long after. It's all a bit heart over head and I think massively unlikely. Hard to not like the idea of him coming back with a point to prove and scoring the winner against Norwich haha. What is interesting is we have Clarke and Johnson. Urgently and if they stay we are not desperate. Williams would be free and presumably wages low as well now. 6 months contract "go and show everyone what you can do" and earn the an 1 year + with option. If he has the hunger and desire it could be brilliant. If he doesn't we don't lose a lot. (No reason you can't put some protection in the contract if he goes AWOL again). Before any of the above just have him training for a few weeks. Where is he at. [Post edited 27 Jun 14:04]

Quite. Far too much baggage and risk tied with him, no matter how much talent he has. Perversely, it was him letting us down that cemented Axel in that role (I think). A

My thoughts precisely. Far too sentimental. I want him to be successful and I want us to be successful. If it was together that would be great, but once burnt I doubt McK will be on the phone to him.

Half the season to get back up to pace, and then go missing for the second half of the season like last time? Not the kind of risk we need to, or should be taking...
