Ashton convinced McKenna won't leave this summer 18:21 - Jun 27 with 3714 viewsgsoly

This one passed me by. Ashton on TalkSport with White & Jordan this morning.

Answer on McKenna from 5:50:

"We sat down right at the end of the season at my house one night, looked each other in the eye, and said are we in? Are you in for this Kieran?

"And he was very clear and said absolutely Mark. We've got a job to do and I want to take us back up."

Haven't heard it as clear cut before. He's here to stay.

Welll, he isn’t off to Brentford or Spurs. I don’t see any other vacancies to tempt him...

He was fully ‘in’ before speaking to Crystal Palace…, agreeing terms with Brighton, speaking to Chelsea, and most recently Brentford.

That anyone takes Ashton at face value is bizarre.

35 years, zero elite success, not to detract where he’s had success in the EFL, but this summer running about getting selfies with boxers and pop stars sums him up.

Ego and control. They’re limiting factors at this level.

No category one, while league one clubs manage it, a depleted and very unbalanced squad, and FOUR YEARS since the promised foreign talent ID network we desperately crave.

He can’t delegate, he can’t appoint people better than him, to support the clubs needs.

I can see why Watford said on his departure ‘try and find someone to say a good word about Mark, you won’t’

The same mistakes, repeated for 35 years.

It’s not what anyone wants to hear, but it’s true. He isn’t at the level we need if we want to progress.

His ‘we’re better in the EFL’ interview was pathetic!!

You didn’t spend £150 million and only leave us with a 34 year old in midfield if you thought we’d end up back here.., and having our assets picked apart on the pitch.

Maybe focus on the football, and less about Eds autograph!

The bloke’s overseen the most successful footballing period and largest off-pitch improvement and overhaul in a generation. Just because you clearly don’t like the man, you can’t deny the above.

With Andrews being promoted at least there won't be a huge potential merry-go-round of managers.

I'd love him to do a Sir Bob and be here for many years but if he takes us back up and leaves I'll have no problem with that.

To be fair to Ashton, it can’t be easy living in the shadow of all the spectacular achievements of Simon Clegg and Ian Milne.

Absolutely spot on. The bloke would eat himself if he was made of chocolate.
Yes he’s overseen our best years recently, but has had a massive budget to recruit, even when we were in L1.

You clearly have met him and know him well. What’s he like?

You see, all I’ve seen is the dinky beard, suntan, Brentspeak, a lot of Fabio and descriptions of him as worse than Satan by monobrow knuckle draggers following Bristol City. I’ve also seen the club promoted twice, the stadium cleaned and tidied and its value increased from £40m to around £250m according to the internet. We also have a training ground being built that should be a little better than the Scutari version at Playford Road.

I presume this is all the work of others and the owners keep paying Ashton because they find his accent funny?

So, what’s MA like? What does he do day to day? What should he have done better? What was he supposed to say on Talksport?

And where was the "massive budget to recruit" when we were last in the Championship and promoted? Ashton has overseen a miraculous turnaround in record time, deservedly acknowledged by those with a far more balanced opinion than you're showing.

Well, there are some people out there that just love to hate, see the negatives, look for people to blame even if it means digging up that people didn’t like him 20 years ago at Watford. You know, the sort of people who when you look in their eyes you see the back of their head.

Not that liking the bloke is relevant. He’s not there to be liked. Life is not a popularity contest. I don’t know him, don’t wish to. I just want him to do a decent job, get more right than wrong etc.
