It’s quite difficult to show empathy towards individuals who openly admit to despising migrants, still find Bernard Manning funny, blindly believe everything Farage promises them and think Israel is behaving wholly appropriately.
You call it ‘delegitimising’ their views, but when they’re just too stupid and entrenched to listen to any other viewpoint, they don’t lack self-awareness?

I’m not ‘stereotyping’ them. All four of those examples are happily owned by one of our ‘narrowly closed mind’ individuals.
As for the wider point, I’d be quite happy to be challenged and belittled for not agreeing that..
Farage is great.

the general lack of self-awareness, the belief that someone's own views are uniquely objective and correct, and the lack empathy towards others to recognise that their opposing views are legitimately held is a depressing feature of much online discussion. as i say, it becomes very dull. |

A truly tolerant society must retain the right to deny tolerance to those who promote intolerance, if intolerant ideologies are allowed unchecked expression, they could exploit open society values to erode or destroy tolerance itself.
