Don’t recall USA 94 games suffering extreme heat on 08:39 - Jul 13 by baxterbasics
It's mainly the latter.
It was hot back then too but players just got on with it. Back when men were men.
And when player welfare wasn’t a major consideration ….
Add to that the increase in pace and level players are now expected to operate at when on the pitch, and you are creating the perfect conditions for it to end very badly.

Clearly nobody passed the “operate at pace” message on to Jonathan Douglas 😂

Fellas, is it gay to not half kill yourself yourself with dehydration now?

Extreme heat is not just dehydration. The body just can't cool its core temperature down naturally in extreme heat despite being adequately hydrated. I ran the snowdon marathon yesterday and it was cancelled after 20 miles due to the number of heat related casualties.
There absolutely was extreme heat at USA 94. The Mexico v Ireland group game was played at 41 degrees, and five of the tournament's games were played indoors.

I remember there were big concerns about the heat and FIFAs approach to drink breaks in 94, it absolutely was a thing then.
and it was often maybe felt England had the luck of not qualifying as we'd have been potentially having the same issues as Ireland did with it.

And on average temperatures are higher everywhere now, even in the 20 years since that World Cup

Nothing says manliness more than playing football with the real possibility of a thunderstorm hovering overhead. Or playing in extreme heat without having a five minute water break.
Proper men doing proper manly stuff.

... but if any of them DO collapse and die in the heat, we can just blame vaccines, so it still won't move the needle amongst those types when it comes to climate change discussions.

It’s okay because the players now have the FIFA mandated 72 hour rest period between games which FIFA had to introduce as a result of too many silly tournaments being introduced by FIFA.
