I still think that’s a stupid idea to let him go for nothing. Given he’s on an estimated £1.5M per year here and this is seen as a huge increase, I doubt they’d bat an eyelid on throwing £1M our way. They’ll be spending shed loads on say a 3 yr deal - £8M, £12M £15M? Who knows, but it sounds like he’ll at least double his salary. He’s got this opportunity largely because of us, is still under contract and has big value to us still. Don’t give him away for free ffs when you don’t need to. You give sh*t players away for free to get them off the books.

Noone really knows what's gone on behind the scenes.

Morsy seems to want to leave, we're paying him ÂŁ30k a week and probably wont be a sure starter anymore. That money can go on someone else.

Don't get me wrong, I get your point. I want him to stay but they might have had an agreement etc. Who knows.

Consider they would only have to match his salary for him to almost double his income.

Yes true, we don’t know. I’ll be annoyed if it turns out his agent ends up with what would have been a decent fee for us. It’s a generous offer from us for sure.

While I agree that gifting some oil barons a fine footballer who is still under contract for free sticks in the craw...

This is about showing some respect to Morsy himself and rewarding him for everything he's done for us isn't it? Not demanding a fee makes his life easier (no protracted negotiations, can get his family moved and settled asap), and may also have given his agent more leverage when negotiating his contract.

If it was anyone else I'd probably agree with you, but the Egyptian King has earnt it as far as I'm concerned.

I understand why Town have done this and it's in some ways a great credit to our club thst thry have done it. But this was my point in another thread yesterday, scum always get good deals from their departing players. We often don't.

So now we have lost in this summer window three VERY good players,
Axel, Burgess and Morsy and got sod all in by way of fees. How is that financially sound....or is that me being " negative"?

Tuanzebe and Burgess were out of contract. How could we have got fees for them?

They were offered (presumably competitive) new deals but opted to look elsewhere for understandable reasons: Tuanzebe to play in the Premier again in his native northwest, Burgess to be a first choice centre back in a World Cup year.

It happens. Not really sure what else we could have done.

It's you being negative again.

Morsy is 34, his resale value is fairly small in the grand scheme of things. How much do you think we should be getting for him? How much would Norwich get?

We’re not a charity though. Morsy’s been an incredible and successful captain for us but let’s not forget how good the club has been in his journey. It works both ways, he’s gone Port Vale > Chesterfield > Wigan > Boro out of favour to ultimately getting his opportunity to captain a premier league club. I’d say it’s been mutually beneficial.

I don’t think there’s as much sentimentality and altruism to it as some are making out, and rightly so. No doubt there’s an element of doing right by him, but he’s on a big wage, we’ve not engaged in a new deal and clearly think it’s right for both parties to let him go. I don’t think we would do it otherwise, and the only players we’ve had this talk of tend to be the ones with little resale value or where their future earnings would outweigh that. We were quite happy to call Edmundson back from Boro and force a fee from them.

I think it’s probably deemed as much the right thing for the club as it is for the player. We’re not push over, and nor should we be.

I think it's more about doing him a favour by letting him take the opportunity in Kuwait. If he were to join Derby, then we'd want a fee.

I do wonder if there may be a little bit of cleverness in this.

The kuwait owner is an investor and the consortium consists of a lot of property owners.. possibly we've done good for morsy but behind the scenes made a relationship which benefits our investors

No, of course, and there's definitely an upside for us too in getting a high earner off the books. And as you say, we tend to play hardball with fees and rightly so. But I think in this case the club will have seen little value in potentially complicating a dream end of career move for a club legend for the sake of a relatively minor fee. Clearly if he'd moved to Derby, normal service would have applied and we would have squeezed a fee out of them - again, rightly.

Scum have lost plenty of players for free as well. Pukki, who was a legend in their limited terms, left them for free. Hernandez, who was a bit of a cult hero there, just left for free. You have a tendency to be selective when it comes to this sort of thing.

I think it’s as straight forward as he’s a big earner, he’s not guaranteed football here moving forward, we’ve signed a long term replacement and we’re comfortable to lose him. If it’s his preferred destination then we’re probably happy to agree terms that’ll help facilitate it as the alternative would be negligible. I’d be very confident if there was a big fee to be had elsewhere we would be looking to get one though. Similar would’ve been true for Harness.

Admittedly Morsy is probably the biggest one so far, but of those we’ve moved on under McKenna I can’t really recall any that you would say look like ones we might live to regret. Delap doesn’t count as it was unavoidable.

What do you do? Stand in the way of an examplary professional/actually a f king hero earning a life changing amount of money or hold said individual to his contract. Sometimes and in special circumstances you have to recognise what the man has done and say so long and thanks for the good times.

I imagine if we were selling him to Derby then by the time the agent has taken a cut and Morsy has had his share too (pretty sure you usually have to pay some proportion of the contract to end it early) we'd barely have made a dime. I would imagine the deal here is Morsy walks away to a lucrative contract and we owe nothing to him or his agent, so it ends up being barely any different for us financially.

Yeah, not to mention possibly having to bridge his salary for the next year and strengthening a potential divisional rival.

The first question we will have asked ourselves is are we happy to move him on, regardless of the where. Once we’ve got comfortable the answer to that is yes it’s probably a bit of a balance then between doing right by him and maximising value. As you say that’s probably quite negligible in this instance. I’m pretty confident if there was 7 figures upside to be had elsewhere we would’ve looked to realise it.

It feels pretty fair in this instance, we’re obviously comfortable to lose him or we would’ve insisted he sees his deal out, he’s not out of contract. And we’re obviously comfortable with the terms relative to alternatives. For Morsy it’s a great opportunity for a big final pay day.

By the sound of Phil's earlier report, Kipre is here based on Sam's recommendation. Big earner who'd likely be on the bench most of the season off the books and one last big pay day for Sam, seems everyone has done well!
Best of all he's not gone to Derby!
