Aberdeen 10:18 - Jul 26 with 3767 views | 1903Dons | Morning folks , I just wanted to congratulate your team for last nights victory, Albeit it was a friendly, I thought Ipswich looked a classy outfit. The intensity of the high press made it difficult for us to get on the ball for most of the evening to really trouble you, and thats down to your manager and how he wants you to play. I’ve never even seen the high press being executed like that at Pittodrie even we come up against Celtic. Shout out to the Ipswich fans who made the long journey 👏
Aberdeen on 10:27 - Jul 26 with 3620 views | RIPbobby | I think the difficult thing for us now is this is the 4th full season playing under this model and many teams we have played have taken it for themselves and made their variety of it. So when we played teams before we caught them cold and we overan them. Now it will be more difficult as they will be better prepared to face us. It was a useful game. Both teams will learn a lot from it. Good luck against them jambos.

Aberdeen on 11:42 - Jul 26 with 2979 views | gainsboroughblue | Always had a lot of time for Aberdeen. When I was growing up, played them in the UEFA Cup and they came down here for George Burley's testimonial. Very good side early 80s too. Won a European title. McGhee, Hewitt, Black, Weir, Strachan, Miller etc.

They can copy it all they like. McKenna's genius is in tweaking and adapting in game, good luck to them trying replicate that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

apart from that UEFA Cup game ! Similarities to us then, punching above our weight with two great managers.

A ridiculous team in the early 1980s, not unlike ourselves. Alex McLeish and Willie Miller probably one of the best defensive partnerships in British football. Gordon Strachan and Neil Simpson fantastic midfielders. Trophy after trophy in what was a very competitive era for Scottish football. A fine city too, beautiful part of the world - if a bit nippy! Best of luck for the season ahead.
Aberdeen on 15:02 - Jul 26 with 1917 views | Freddies_Ears | On our way back home, after a great time! Aberdeen is an impressive city, and I wish we could have stayed longer. Super ground (I even had a chance to see the memorabilia behind the scenes), fabulous support. I thought the minute we dropped from our top level, you were at least our equal. Given the vast difference in budgets, that is honestly praise for your abilities. Have a good season!

Aberdeen on 17:27 - Jul 26 with 1319 views | franz_tyson | Used to work in the Oil industry and used to go up to Aberdeen regularly to our Aberdeen office. I was told by one of my Aberdeen colleagues that after we'd won the UEFA Cup we went up there the year after for a European tie ( uefa Cup) and we were as cocky as f@ck before we got our ar@ses kicked and were knocked out. It wasn't plucky little Ipswich .... we were Big Time Charlie's, apparently. Great side were Aberdeen and I remember Dundee Utd ( the Dandy Dons) were a really good side in the early 80's. Pity it just became a two team league.

That early European exit was the beginning of the end. The money we’d invested in the new Pioneer stand from European success was no more. Player sales then the rest was history.

Yep, they’ve got some serious history. It’s quite a gulf now though unfortunately. The local paper discussing their team that was linked on another thread was an eye opener. It’s was talking about a couple of their new signings costing £1m each as if that meant there was some expectation on them. It’s a different level financially. What did Brum spend on Stansfield in L1 - £15m plus add ons wasn’t it? That was rare, but £10m signings in the Championship happen each year. I’m rambling and don’t know if I’ve got a point. If I have it’s probably just a nostalgic being a bit fecked off that money is ruining the game and making it so hard for some leagues to be competitive.

Not sure it was losing to Aberdeen that was the catalyst, as we finished as runners up in the league to Liverpool, with more wins than 80/81. The big problem was 82/83 getting knocked out in the first round by Roma, finishing 9th in the league and no European football thereafter. https://thesefootballtimes.co/2019/07/08/they-sold-a-team-and-built-a-stand-how-
