Yep, and I hate it. But Latin players seem to be another breed when it comes to cheating.

Yes? I've grown up and watched more and more British players resort to the sort of stuff that is now unfortunately commonplace. But I always saw more play-acting from Spain/Portugal/Italy/South American teams.

Ah, no. It’s the dark arts not cheating. Lol. It’s only cheating when others do it. Mind you, the Italians (men’s team) are probably the finest proponents of the dark arts/cheating. I think there’s some truth to that. I’m old enough to remember when English clubs were way behind when it came to the dark arts. We’ve certainly caught up now, but still can’t match the Italians.

Certainly all the 70s and 80s British commentators Motson, Davies, Moore etc would agree with you. But I think it was more down to a different mentality. A British player would not go down unless they were absolutely pole-axed. Foreign players often had more technical skills and they felt that if they beat you they had the right to go down to win the free-kick however minimal the contact. Eventually as we imported more and more players, the latter attitude became the norm.

England fans love to recall how Maradona cheated in 86, whilst forgeting the tackles our lads put in on him, including a forearm smash to his head by Terry Fenwick. Think the phrase is rose tinted glasses.

Maradona never thought for one minute that he would get away with what he did - it was so blatant that it was ridiculous. Fenwick’s elbow was just thuggish and extremely dangerous but typified the then English attitudes towards cheating - physical intimidation that could break someone’s legs etc, that’s fine. Proper hard men doing proper things when football was proper. A dive, nah can’t be doing with that. Totally unforgivable. One thing which I have always found odd - was Peter Shilton only capable of jumping a couple of inches off the ground? And during the next WC from the highlights that I’ve seen he just seems quite static. Was he really the best English keeper around then?

Back then you had a choice of Shilton, Chris Woods and Ipswich born Gary Bailey. Shilton was the best keeper about, but Gary Bailey should have played more than he did. Shilton failure to out jump an Argentinian short arse has always rankled me.

Shilton getting out jumped by a midget was cr*p, not sure we had any better tbh Clemence and Corrigan I think were both around but Shilton probably the best we had. Yeah, Italia 90 his penalty attempts, let's say he was no Paul Cooper in that regard.

The fact that you can name Lee after all these years suggests he was one of the exceptions, not the rule. And he was. Mike Summerbee wasn’t averse to a dive too and slightly later Eric Gates knew where the floor was. That was an age when if you rolled around screaming, you’d either be given something to scream about later in the game or get more than one of your team mates treating you with contempt/delivering an earful. By and large, the game regulated itself. It was hard and so were a lot of the players, but everyone knew what a ‘nauty’ challenge looked like and retribution would come. Sometimes, like Chelsea/Leeds FA Cup Final replay in 1970 the tasty stuff got out of hand - but again that was the exception. Cheats like Ronaldo, Maradona wouldn’t have lasted five minutes pulling the antics they did and Cucurella would have long since been wondering where his kneecaps and thatched roof hair went. The fact that our terrible commentators insist on using the word ‘simulation’ says it all. Nobody wants to face the problem. All games are filmed. It’s easily done but nobody’s interested because cheating works. People like Lineker and diver Shearer with their conspiratorial nod and a wink ‘well he had to go down’. No he didn’t and to suggest a player did is all part of ‘you are not an ex-footballer, you don’t understand, it’s part of the game’ nonsense. In other words justifying their own irrelevant existence. Actually smuchops Shearer, I do understand and I don’t like it. The game should be more important than players and teams (paraphrasing John Cobbold here), but it isn’t. If it was, abominations like VAR would have been binned long since. Dodgy decisions, cheating favours the big boys. They get the best of the decisions and ultimate protection to do as they please by the officials. Ok, they might bring in the big bucks, but it doesn’t make it right. [Post edited 28 Jul 8:49]

Whereas football has gone too far in allowing players to roll on the floor without sanction. I’d rather that than allow football to go back to the 70s and 80s which was allowed thugs to injure skilful players for fun.

The Brits are really the only ones who want to stop simulation or diving. Many South Americans see it as a skill to be commended - the ability to trick a ref is just as good as being able to trick an opponent... Going back to the OP the Spanish were throwing themselves on the floor a lot, they didn't need to tackle our players, they could do this and the ref would give them a free kick. The worst decision I thought when Agyemang tried to run though was intentionally blocked off by a defender and the ref gave them the free kick....

You don't even have to go back that far if you recall the tackle that put paid to Ulrich Le Pen's chances of a career in English football.
