I’m no doctor, physio but maybe something was slightly misaligned and it was never really fixed.

From memory, so don't quote me I think He broke the fibula, the smaller bone behind the tibia. It is not as load bearing as the bigger tibia at the front of the leg, hence he was not so aware of it at the time. | | | |
