According to Nixon.

Ipswich push hard for McBurnie

By Alan Nixon

Ipswich Town are pushing hard to win the race for striker
Oli McBurnie - ahead a pack of rivals.

The relegated Tractor Boys have come on strong for free
agent McBurnie after lining up the sale of Nathan
Broadhead to Wrexham.

McBurnie has already been in talks with old clubs
Swansea and Sheffield United as well as Hull City.

Ipswich may offer the best footballing chance for him as
the Scot looks to join a promotion chasing outfit.

Kieran McKenna is trying to put a squad together to go
straight back up and the target man with a prove record
is a priority.

Spanish clubs are also keen on McBurnie after a year
with Las Palmas but Ipswich are emerging as favourites.

Seems to be a great deal of negative feelings surrounding this one.
Having studied his profile and play style, he looks like a Delap/Hirst hybrid and may fit in well if we secure Hackney.
His Championship stats are excellent and may be worth a punt on a two year contract.
In LaLiga they played him wider out instead of up front like a conventional 9.
We have seen that Delap worked well with KMcK and it may be the same here - although his sh@thousery may need to be clipped.

It's his off-field antics I'd be worried about.

If it's a choice between going in to the new season (which is 8 days away) with Hirst & Al-Hamadi or Hirst & McBurnie, then it's the latter and it's not even close.

Obviously it's all about money and making it back to the premier league but this would be a really strange one and show that Ashton was full of it when he said getting people who really wanted to be here and would represent the ethos of the club

A lot of footballers don’t use their brains off the pitch. It’s what they can do on the pitch that matters. I’m sure not every TWTDs contributor is perfect either. Although some would have you think they are more perfect than god himself ! A bit of a rough diamond yes, and a bit sh!t housery on the pitch(sometimes you need a bit of that , Morsy was far from perfect there). I’d take him. Him and Hirst any day above Hirst and Ali.

McBurnie just doesn't seem to fit the narrative of a KM type of player, one potential bad apple is all it takes.

Swansea sources reckon he had discussions over here as well, so it very much sounds like his agent is working overtime.

He was actually spotted in Sheffield, so seems to have been something in that.

There are degrees of bad between perfect and pure evil.

But the choice also includes going into the first game with Hirst and Al Hamidi and biding our time to get a better option in before the end of August. I'd rather do that than panic sign McBurnie, who isn't very good and is also a weapon.

None of us are perfect, but most of us don't have drink drive convictions and cautions for assault and further charges against us for assault. I'd wager most of us don't have a criminal record at all. This is stuff that's all happened while he's been a pro footballer too, these aren't scrapes he got into at 15.

Don’t mind it long as he’s third choice.

Only as an al Hamidi replacement. You’d want a real striker to come in as competition for George.

Strong rumour on Hull City forums that he's currently undergoing a medical with us?!

They say we blew them out of the water re. wages.

Surprised at the narrow minded hatred towards him, in some quarters.

Exactly the profile we lack and need, nasty.

11 goal contributions last season in a league light years above this level.

That’s more than our entire forward group combined, excluding Delap.

He’s a handful, creates space, and has scored goals at this level.., and a free, will cost a fair bit in wages but would add something different to the group.

We have lightweight and technical coming out of our ears .., we crave a nuisance. Sign him up.

You're surprised some people would rather we didn't sign a drink driving thug with a very patchy record at this level? You must be very easily surprised, great to buy for on birthdays "Ooh, some socks! What a surprise!".

His character at clubs has repeatedly been called into question, and he’s a drink-driving asshole.

Would hate to have him here.

While I'm still not a fan of his track record, having watched clips of him for Las Palmas last season on YouTube, he's definitely more mobile than I remember. Similar to Hirst re. running channels and working defenders, but possibly a bit more rugged than Hirst.

If Sheffield United are pushing to sign him back there can't be that many issues about his character. I haven't heard many character problems over last few years of his career

Drink driving obviously a massive issue, but that was over 5 years ago now - he's not a serial offender so hopefully has learned from it

That was always his game. His younger version was a bit like a poor man’s Delap. Quite direct and a very willing runner. He had a bit about him and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in. I don’t know if he’s mellowed/slowed down as he’s got a bit older. He needs the physicality, so if we are going for him I hope he’s still got an edge and hasn’t lost much in the way of pace (as he didn’t have a huge amount to lose - fine and mobile for a 9 but not quick). A more aggressive and direct Hirst is a pretty good comparison. I’ve mentioned it before, I can see why we might be interested.

Not sure when the pitch invasion was when Forest fans came on and taunted and attacked the Sheffield United players, but I certainly wouldn't hold that against him after what happened to Billy Sharp

He was found not guilty of that charge, which to be fair came after Forest fans invaded the pitch and went after Sheff U players.

He addresses the past wrongdoings – to some extent anyway – here: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/dec/06/we-speak-to-everyone-in-spanish

Who knows if this ends up being a question for Town or not but, if it does, I'd be a bit reluctant to go for the moral jugular straight up. I don't know the guy or how he lives now but I do know, as most of us probably do, that early 20s to late 20s is quite the development curve. People change, mature, add other dimensions to their lives that smooth the jagged edges.
