Hackney medical is happening tomorrow (Thursday). Still hasn’t agreed yet but is getting there. Impressed by McKenna today and his ideas so I’m told.
Personal opinion (and from what I’ve heard today from my pal) is that he’s hoped an Everton or the like come in as he knows he’s good enough for Prem football right now. His stats have him as one of the best under 23 midfielders in the world. That said, if nobody comes in for him, playing for us as a likely top 2 team and playing for McKenna is still a huge step up. It’s not that he’d be rejecting us, but more that he’d be rejecting the championship. Which makes sense.
I think we get him. And he takes us to the prem which is what both parties want obviously. Would be some bloody signing. Uppa Towen.
Edit - And the other interesting bit I got about the transfer itself was that the reason they accepted 20m on the second bid as a package is because the outright original fee is a big chunk rather than instalments as is often the case. We’re giving them a proper lump which they (Middlesbrough) were apparently all for. Hackney pissing around and taking his time does us (in case someone else comes in) and Boro (as they want to spend the money on other plays) no favours whatsoever.

Maybe (do wages help arrive at £25m? Believe transfer fee is £13m + potential £4m). If we go up next season, I think we should look to poach starters from the best clubs in the best leagues in the world, even if they're dipping into their 30s. A sprinkle of genuinely elite talent could make all the difference, even if they provide little resale value. Maybe we tried this in Phillips, just in reality we were loaning a player who struggled to get a kick for West Ham. |

I have a feeling it'll be much closer at the bottom this year. Have to say Sunderland have made some exceptional signings so far, Adingra is class and the lad they brought in from USG – Sadiki – has a massive future ahead. |

Palace also have the distraction of the Conference League, something that I think has quite a few games and they will need to put some effort into while not wanting to get too distracted from the league, which is hard with 17 players! |  | | |

Everton looked especially poor last night, and lucky to be playing a west ham team who blow hot and cold. Think Everton will struggle without huge investment in new players.
And West Ham have enough to survive without too much issue. If Lewis Orford or Callum Marshall wanted more regular starts I’d be happy to see either come to us on loan. |  |

It’s only that city have the first option to match any bids we receive. There’s no specific fee set for them to have him back on the cheap. It’s just that they can match whatever someone like Chelsea offer. They have a few days to react to the bid that we must disclose to them.

Fairly sure we could have pulled off a transfer like Xhaka last season if we wanted to. We just decided not to spend £25m over three years on a 33 year old of questionable temperament.
Sunderland while having a big stadium etc, were in theory behind us in terms of squad development etc too at this stage. They feel like another who have come up maybe 1 or 2 seasons early and are about to be found out (like us). Plus they lost arguably their two best players on promotion too. |
Agreed. Omari Hutchinson was our number one priority, marquee signing last summer, and he was delivered.
Most of the other signings last year fitted a similar profile: quick, young, Home players for FA/UEFA purposes, with high upside and potential for future profit.
Xhaka may be what Sunderland need to stay up: if he is, it's money well spent. But it is almost certain that they won't make a transfer profit on him! | | | |

I would be surprised if he’s one that would be a high priority target for them. Pretty sure they’ll be looking for established top flight players either from here or abroad. Can’t see the Spurs fans being overly happy with this either. He may well be on their “long list” but I’m sure Frank is on record as saying he wants more established players. I really admire your optimism (there's precious little of it on here sometimes), but I can't see how we're best placed to jump up from our mini league into the top 17 PL teams, when three of that mini league are in the PL this season and we're not?! |
How many Championship teams in history have a squad more valuable than ours? Since our year in the Prem, many of our players have increased significantly in value. I haven't done an analysis, but gut feel is that the squad McKenna is assembling here, especially if we get Hackney, is possibly the strongest and most expensive 2nd tier squad ever. |  |
