Remember your first time...... 13:04 - Aug 4 with 2764 viewsBlacknGoldnBlue

Do you remember your first football match you attended? Was it a Town match? Can you remember who played? What was score? Anything stand out memorable from the game? What thing sticks in your memory about the experience?

Poll: Will Ipswich be relegated this season?

We lost 2-0 at home to 9 man Crystal Palace.

Clearly I’m a glutton for punishment.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

24th October 1970 at Portman Road
Ipswich 1 Liverpool 0
Town - Sivell, Hammond, Mills, Morris, Baxter, McNeil, Robertson, Viljoen, Woods, Collard, Hill, Sub Lambert.
Liverpool - Clemence, Lawler, Yeats, Smith, Lloyd, Hughes, Hall, Lindsay, Heighway, McLaughlin, Thompson. Sub St. John

Mick Hill scored the winner for Ipswich. I still have the match programme.

I was 12 and went with my mate and his dad. Couldn't really ask for a better start than that and I was hooked! I only missed one home game in the next 12 years and that was when we played Birmingham on a weekday afternoon in 1973, due to not being able to use the floodlights during the miner's strike. I was still at school.

Town v Wolves, early 70's. Strangely I remember more wolves players than ours - Dave Wagstaffe and Derek Dougan (who I think scored for them). David Best was in goal for us. Can't even remember the final score - suspect it was 0:1 - unless someone else knows better!

Your memory is failing you my old mate!

According to the Pride of Anglia website, it wasn't 1970-1 as Dougan didn't play.
It wasn't 1971-72 as although Dougan & Wagstaffe played for Wolves, Laurie Sivell was in goal for Town.
It was either 21 Apr 1973 Ipswich 2 (Morris, Whymark) Wolves 1 (Richards) or the next season - 27 Oct 1973 Ipswich 2 (Morris, Hamilton), Wolves 0
Those are the only games I can see where Best, Dougan & Wagstaffe all played.

So whichever it was, you started with a win!

Maybe 1969? Dougan and Best played and Dougan scored.

But maybe my memory is messing about - it has been known to happen you know!

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Ah yes, I didn't look at the games before 1970.

Weirdly enough mine was West Ham v Barnsley. Pretty sure it was an FA Cup match and they went in 2-0 down and ended up winning 3-2. The Julian Dicks/Ian Bishop era.

Was a pretty good game considering I wasn't converted into a Hammer afterwards!

Ipswich Vs Watford November 3rd 1984

Final score was 3 - 3 but as I was with my grandparents we left 2 mins early to avoid the rush when the score was 2 - 1 to Watford. Got a momento of the game....

I'm the one in the middle.

First game was Palace v ??(possiblyDerby) in mid 60s as i was born in Dorking...
Can't really remember the score possibly 1-1 but the one thing that sticks vividly in my mind was a chap making an attempt to get on the pitch but slipping as he tried to jump the perimeter wall and falling backwards smashing his head open on the terracing!!.... put me right off for a bit!

Next was a London derby Spurs v Chelsea roughly 1967 when Dad got tickets through work... spent game watching the two sets of yobs chasing each other round the open terracing!...

First Town game when I fell in love with live football and the club was September 22nd 1973 v Burnley ( after the Real Madrid game) 3-2 Town with a Bryan Hamilton brace..... my avitar is the programme cover.

Ipswich vs Reading, April 1996 - we lost 2-1.

I was 4 - can’t remember much about the game, other than the result. What I do remember is walking up the stairs and seeing the pitch for the first time and thinking it was the most mindblowingly amazing thing in the whole world. Still get that feeling a little bit any time I get down to PR on matchday!

Genuinely cannot remember my first game, but it was town for sure. However, the first memory i have is watching Dalian Atkinson score against someone whilst sitting in the lower cobbold.

First game i recall, Ipswich v Cambridge, and i recall steve claridge scoring. Google says this was 1990/1 sometime, making me 8. Playing left back for Cambridge was Andy Jeffrey, who i now work with!

Wow! I know he scored some wonderful goals but scoring while sitting in the crowd is something else.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

1992, Town 2 2 Palace

Both teams also missed a penalty. Palace's was missed by some bloke called G Southgate. Wonder whatever happened to him, and if he ever took another pen?

Ipswich 6 - 1 Barnsley.
The promotion season.

Dad came home from work early and drove us from Norwich to Portman Road.

3-0 up at half time, dad turns to me and says 'if we play like this second half we will score another 3'. Couldn't have asked for a better first game really. I was hooked from that moment.

Pretty sure my next game was a 2-1 loss to QPR and then a 1-0 win over Swindon.

Was also lucky enough to be at the home semi final Vs Bolton and then the final at Wembley.

I was definitely spoilt in my early years supporting town.

Town 0-0 Notts County, 17th November 1990.

I remember being in the Portman Lower, as it was then, in the family enclosure – schools like mine, Dale Hall, were given a certain number of ticket offers per season. It was absolutely p7ssing down and some Notts supporters in there let me and my dad go under their umbrella at one point. The game was a shocker, some Notts lad ran clean through and missed, there was also some kind of goalmouth scramble that I remember excitedly telling my teacher about the next Monday. I was hooked.

Ipswich 1 0 Manchester United. February 1969.
Tony Dunne own goal.
Hooked for life.
Thanks Dad.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

April 2nd 1956 Carrow Road (I had to look up the exact date!).

Roy Bailey's debut. He let in two goals in the first five minutes. We lost 3-2.

Ipswich 5 - 2 Birmingham. October 1977.

Don’t remember too much about it (I was 5) other than the bucket I was standing on broke when I jumped to celebrate a goal.

Ipswich 2 Stoke 0 April 1982

I was a very excited 9 year old who was in awe when I caught the first glimpse of the stadium when parking up in the old Greyfriars multi storey. Still remember it like yesterday

I was about 3 or 4 years old. I remember my Grandad holding my hand, taking me from his house, for a short walk to a football pitch in the grounds of a large county house. No idea who was playing, probably the village team vs an other. No idea of the score, or if there were even goals. Never went there again, probably due to the pitch being quite temporary.

For years, I wondered if it was a false memory, but the pitches' brief existence got confirmed to me by some older gents in the village when I was in my 20s.
