We've got a really strong team (whoever plays tonight), an amazing manager, and our outlook is frankly insane compared to where were were just 3 years ago. So I should be confident, even allowing for the challenge that Birmingham obviously pose.
But there is just that nagging doubt that we'll have a hangover from last season, which seemed to get worse as it went along (if we're honest about it).
Absolutely nothing is decide tonight, but it will be a huge confidence boost (for me if nothing else!) if we do start with a win.

Start is key. They'll be hyped up beyond belief and it's one of the best atmospheres in England when they get going. Need to have a steady opening without giving them too many chances, and impose ourselves. Got more than enough to win the game. |  |

I’m thinking back to Sunderland away 2 seasons ago, similar ‘we could do without this first’ vibe, they dominated us for at least the first 35 minutes, and I expect them to try to do the same tonight. Honestly, I think we're going to lose narrowly tonight. Like in 1995, they've got the momentum and we've got the hangover. In fact, although that 1995/96 season we ended up doing OK and laying the foundations for a successful few years, we were pretty slow starters. Have a feeling we might be again. No, you're right, we've looked bang on it in preseason for the most part. Perhaps hangover is the wrong word. But it will be an adjustment for us, and there's no denying that starting in a new division above is a lot more energising than starting in a new division below.
