What a waste of our taxes on 19:59 - Aug 10 by redrickstuhaart | They are doing their job. The alternative is to break their basic code of office and to lose their jobs potentially. If you have police deciding which laws are right or wrong, we are screwed. Y |
Yup. I have some sympathy with the OB here, with the massive caveat that they have to carry out their arrests gently and with respect and understanding. [Post edited 10 Aug 20:43]

What a waste of our taxes on 20:31 - Aug 10 by ClareBlue | You can protest against the legislation without breaking it. More subtle ways to make the point without having a placard supporting a proscribed organisation. Plenty of young people's lives are at risk of being significantly altered after yesterday. Travel bans, jobs they will not be able to do, restrictions on working in all legal professions, etc etc. I wouldn't say half of then know the consequences of what they were involved in yesterday |
Most of those arrested were older. And they were doing it for that very reason. Watch the film-its shameful. But actually, the best way of protesting against such absurdity is highlighting the absurdity.

What a waste of our taxes on 19:17 - Aug 10 by lowhouseblue | but clearly not an argument that you can counter. you can label it pejoratively copying the insults used by others but you can't actually engage with the point being made. editorialising rather then debating. i was responding to someone who claimed that 'standing by' and being 'silent' in the face of an humanitarian crisis is unacceptable - and i've shown cases where lots of people who post constantly about gaza stand by and are silent. i'm pointing to inconsistency and hypocrisy. calling me names doesn't respond to that point. |
Bore off. | |

They’ve been pit in an impossible position by Yvette Cooper. Palestine Action clearly aren’t engaged in terrorist activities (at least from what I’ve seen, but maybe I’ve missed them bombing communities). I’m not surprised people are resisting. It’ll be interesting to see how the appeal against proscribing goes.

never any answers. you're challenged so you attack the person rather than engage with the arguments. for anyone who's out of the sixth form it's pathetic. indeed, in any decent sixth form they'd take you aside and explain how debate is supposed to work.

The justice system will have to work within the established sentencing guidelines. And will assess the proscribing issue on proper legal principles for a Judicial Review. Broadly, was the decision reached through proper processes and / or is it patently unreasonable.

Key will be what happens if PA’s challenge is successful. What happens to the protestors then? If they’re still penalised, I predict a riot. But I’ve no idea what would happen to them in that situation (I doubt it would be good, as we’ve already seen in the case of convicted climate protestors.

What a waste of our taxes on 19:18 - Aug 10 by brazil1982 | "Sudan is now the world’s largest and most devastating humanitarian crisis, the head of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned" (UN). Never much of this on the news, or dare I say, copied and pasted from the Guardian in here. Where's the outrage? |
The problem with Sudan is that it is an inter-ethnic civil war so it is very difficult to solve. There are also no Westen interests involved. The result is that it gets precious little publicity unless (like me) you listen to the World Service on a regular basis. There are some appalling things that have gone on there but the contrast with Gaza is that people are not trapped in one small area, and Western nations aren't arming and siding with one side. On the other hand, US and European cuts to aid (something I have highlighted on TWTD several times) will impact Sudan. Sadly, very few people in this country seem concerned about cuts to foreign aid. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/humanitarian-system-struggles-fill-us-void-sudan [Post edited 10 Aug 22:26]

No, I just think you're dishonest and disingenuous and I can't be arsed to deal with your constant misrepresentations and distortions. I'm not alone in that view and I'm confident it's an accurate perception of how you engage on here. Why would I want to debate with someone who conducts themself like that? What would be the point?

My hunch is that, whilst charges may be laid, no prosecutions will be brought until the challenge has been heard.

It will eventually end up following its predecessors into that inevitable and ever increasing right-leaning pit of wilful ignorance and shame, whilst the usual backing singers whisper foul and petition for reinstatement. Sweardown, peace and love and at least three downvotes from sympathisers with usernames that begin with ‘b’ or ‘g’

in this case, i have some sympathy, but not in the over-reach exhibited elsewhere, where "free palestine" and "stop the genocide" have been conflated with supporting palestine action by some police officers!
