Might sound really obvious... 09:26 - Aug 11 with 2293 viewstractorboy1978

But thought we really missed Hutchinson on Friday. We needed a ball carrier centrally to drag us up the pitch. I really like Szmodics but that isn't him. If Hutchinson does go, we need someone of a similar profile. I've been pretty firm on here that I wouldn't be selling him though. I think we should be setting our stall out as we have with Davis.

It's also clear to me that for all the 'better' on paper options we have, Chaplin and Broadhead still make us tick a lot better. They know the patterns instinctively and we look more cohesive. McKenna's challenge is finding a blend of 'better' players that functions as well as that front 4 did in 23/24.

MA seen leaving a local chemist's with a large box of Strepsils this morning. Def Info.

That's not good news. It sounds as though Omari's throat infection is going round. As he had a sore throat and high temperature, it could well be Covid, as I do know there is some of that around. I hope not too many players catch it.

I was honestly surprised on Friday by just how much Chaplin improved us. His movement, anticipation, energy, then his understanding of how KMac wants us to play. Suddenly other players were brought into the game. Oppo tiredness played a part, but that's good news, as we will benefit from that last 15-min boost in most games.

I said to a mate that Chappers came on and looked like Chappers, if you know what I mean!

Broady, not so much, but that might just be rustiness. But yes, on Friday's evidence I'd be starting Chappers.

From memory Broadband went directly into a battle, seemed pretty physical, which isn’t his normal game.

Agree on Chaplin (and I know he’ll not be a main stay/starter each week, but I’d have had him as captain this season)

Yes, I'm not sure that SS has really been the success that his numbers in his last Blackburn season might have led us to believe. is that because he had one stonking season, or is it because some players just don't work in our system?

Personally I have always liked Omari on the right much more than in the middle. However, I readily accept that (a) KM knows far more than I will ever know about these things, and (b) If Omari's off, it's kind of a moot point.

Sammie's been injured a fair bit since joining us.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Nice to read an intelligent debate about tactics and style of play on here.

Akpom could be the key to unlocking Szmodics' potential in this team. Reports suggest Akpom likes to drop deep and has the ability to build up play, allowing Szmodics to run in behind and sniff out the goals.

The thought of a front four of Akpom, Szmodics', Philogene and Hutchy (or his replacement) is mouthwatering.

I just wish we'd have added Hackney to that. Someone of his progressive passing ability would be devastating feeding that atrack and unfortunately, for all his qualities, Cajuste isn't really that guy.

Hopefully the Hackney deal could be revived or we find someone of similar abilities.

Can't see Akpom starting ahead of Hirst regularly. I think Hirst will mainly start, for some games we might go Akpom up top, but think we'll also use him a decent amount as a wide forward or 10.

McKenna likes his players to learn their roles inside out. He'll have a preferred position in mind for Akpom. At the moment I'd guess that's striker.

When we had John-Jules on loan he was used as both a 9 and a 10. Hutch has played right across the three behind the striker, Szmodics and Philogene have played a couple of different roles too. He's not averse to players having flexibility. I think he will mainly be seen as a striker but I can't see him being picked ahead of Hirst in that role on the reg.

We really missed a dribbler. Someone who can work the ball out of tight spaces

Philogene could be great this season, but one thing he could never do that Hutch does brilliantly is bounce out of challenges retaining control. Hutch's low centre of gravity and running style allow him to do that better than most other players (even at the level above, I would suggest). Philogene will have to skin players from half a yard further away in order to carry the ball through.

That bouncing off people was a skill and ability that Hutch aquired over the last 18 months. When he first came he was just like Clarke - so easily brushed off the ball. Can Philly learn that? Well, he's been around the higher leagues for a while and not got it - but apart from Hull he hasn't been settled for any length of time so maybe KM can coach it into him.

Clarke? There's no doubt he's got quick feet and loads of skill, but he, like Smodders, seems to me to be a signing that we go because we could, with the hope we could fit them into our system of play. 12 months on we don't seem to have done that and it has to be a concern.

Likewise Kayden Jackson was played in both roles as well.

Hirst will definitely be the mainstay striker.

I think that is massively overblown to be honest. He's contracted here for 4 more years, has a great relationship with McKenna and his team mates and ultimately will knuckle down and be giving his best every time he's out on the pitch. The idea keeping him is going cause more harm to our chances of promotion than him going is just plain wrong.

Guy has already missed one game because his head wasn't right...

I'm not sure that I can share your optimism that he's going to knuckle down.

Yes, both would have helped Friday night. Maybe even a fully fit Burns could have helped. Akpom could have helped as well

Unless we accept a bid for him, I expect we'll see him at some point this week. Think people are going way over the top about the Omari situation.
