It feels like we need those guys in the squad though even for optics. We seem so light on depth at the moment. Unlikely but if Omari decides he can be involved on Sunday, Philogene is fit and you have Akpom and Cajuste then things suddenly look a whole lot better.

The Akpom one is especially strange. If he was a top target, why not loan him in from the start of July so he could have a full pre-season with the squad?!

Understandable he wants the best deal, less understandable he’s happy to largely forsake pre-season and not be ready to help his new club. Ultimately it’s the system that allows this and you hear about no end of players who aren’t ready for the start of the season. The transfer window should shut a week or two before the season starts imo. They’d still have over 2 months for moves. It might speed up decision making too!

It’s like Brums interest made us aware of him. Which surely, as the ‘bigger club’ we should have eyes on deals like that. Maybe we did, but as you say, why not make a move sooner

Yeah, it did feel like the 'hijack' exposed our scattergun approach to recruitment with Ashton. I kinda wish we had a director of football that could work beneath Ashton and alongside McKenna to take this out of Ashton's hands. But the truth is, he lives for deadline days/last weeks of transfer windows as he's in cahoots with his select band of agents.

Makes me think he wasn't the number one target. Though we haven't been linked to many strikers this window.

I've posted on this. The Akpom deal was simply not one that could have been done weeks ago. He wanted a return to the UK and the Prem, so was not open to a move to a Championship Club - it was only as the summer moved on and no Prem clubs showed interest that he was open to said move. This is very much a problem we (and other clubs) face when looking at this level of player - we have to bide our time unfortunately.

I can't see anywhere reporting that Akpom wanted a Prem move. I'd be very surprised if any Prem clubs would've been interested in him, personally.

He was being 'forced' out of Ajax, which (for a large part) explains his stance with wanting to play for us and not Brum. He was being forced out and therefore stood his ground when choosing. I've no doubt that, like Hackney, he wanted a Prem move. Just because it's not widely reporting or pushed by his agent(s) doesn't mean that wasn't the case. As I say, this wasn't a deal that would have been done in June or July. The calibre of players we are going for have either other options or are waiting for other options - we are shopping in a very different place to where we once were.

Not that we'll necessarily see it or hear about it but if the last few weeks of the window don't pan out I suspect the recruitment capability/approach might be challenged by the board/owners.

Feels to me that deals are being pushed towards the end of the window more and more generally these days. You can only recruit players when they are available can't you? Looks to me like plenty of clubs are in the same boat this summer - including Brentford, who are held up as the masters of recruitment.

I keep going back to the end of the window being late Aug as the biggest problem. Close it on 1st Aug and every club has their business done before a ball is kicked. Why can't it be that simple? I don't really know why it's in anyone's best interests for the window to be open for the first few games of the season.

Because most seasons across Europe don't kick off until later on the month. La Liga is this weekend, alongside the Premier League, whilst The Bundesliga and Serie A are the following week. European sides will want to do business right until the start of the season; they won't change their dates to suit the English Football League. And English clubs won't want to be put at a disadvantage by the window closing earlier for them.

My read is he wasn't the top target. Maybe he was plan B or C... and once Brum made their move it forced our hand. It's the only thing that makes sense to me. There's no way we weren't aware of him or his availability - we are too well run for that.

So who were our top targets? Guiu? Hackney? If the move doesn’t work out the club should work on plan B and C instead of continuing the obsession over one player who doesn’t want to come As a parachute club we should be one of the most attractive propositions outside the PL however it seems we are struggling even to get our second and third choices in Either MA and KM are being too picky or the recruitment team is simply incompetent Look at Brum, promoted they signed Kyogo asap who was more effective than any of our forwards last weekend. We have been crying out for a striker since God knows when and are still left with the useless AAH as a backup. Pathetic.

Yeah I think that's precisely who our top targets were. We don't actually know the timeline for a lot of these things. There's no way that the club are working on one deal at a time. However, you have to wait for as long as possible for your top targets otherwise you are settling and potentially missing out on a better player. How can you possibly be too picky? We are spending tens of millions of pounds on these guys - they have to be the right profile and character. I think this is a very emotional and reactionary post from you IMO. The window isn't done. We might not have AAH anywhere near the team come September. It's only "pathetic" if we don't get our deals done by the end of the window.

I’m confused too. Whatever country, league or club you are attached to (or not any) if you are a professional footballer then you would be working towards (or already there) the start of the season if you are europe-based?
