For all the good we’ve done with signings… 17:59 - Aug 13 with 2074 viewsSitfcB

…over the last few years there still hasn’t half been some absolute bizarre ones/flops.

R. Harper
G. Ahadme
A. Al-Hamadi
A. Muric

(The main ones off the top of my head but sure there’s 2 or 3 more?)

Is it to be expected with the amount of signings we make?

They aren’t all going to be a Morsy or a Chaplin I suppose but it’s beggars belief we’ve made these ones, especially Muric, based on some stats, going up to the Premier League and we made a mistake like that.

All the aforementioned really key areas as well, maybe with the exclusion of Harper as he was just ‘back up’ anyway.

I think there are some different types in there:

Harper - just a product of the demolition man summer
Ahadme (and maybe Camara) - relatively cheap options to fill a gap when we didn't land a main target. Kept the majority of our money for other options in the following window. Some of these types worked out really well - e.g the Luongo deal was a cheap short term option that went so much better than many thought it would
Al-Hamadi - was viewed as us jumping a march on some clubs higher up. If we'd had the squad depth the sort of signing we might buy and look to loan out early to develop whilst we still owned him.
Muric - good on paper, bad in practice - seems like some warning signs were missed here.

Ahadme was a punt. We tried to do other deals which didn't come off so took a punt. Some will call it a panic signing. Whatever.

Al-Hamadi wasn't random. He was one the fans were excited about. We just rose too quickly for him. He's a victim of our success.

Muric looked a good signing at the time. Not all signings work out.

Truly impaired.

We made a profit on Ahadme, so under the player trading model, he wasn't a flop.

We might make a profit on Ali Al Hamadi, so the same would apply to him.

Neither were bought to be the first choice Centre Forward.

Muric was such a wrong signing. His clangers cost us not just points, but also the momentum and belief that we could survive.

Harper feels ages ago! Was he an Ashton signing?!?!?

Regarding Harper, he and Edwards were the beginning of the West Brom invasion.

Not disagreeing with you, but I think you can look at most clubs and say the same thing.

Our sister bothering neighbours up the road are a great example. They've bought some right sh1te, some for decent money.

Wonder if we’re still tied to the multi year contract/agreement with the analytics arm of goalkeeper.com. Announced about this time last summer.

Notably, it appears no other clubs have signed up to work with them in such a way.

Was intrigued when we signed him but the fact we signed him injured made it a waste of time as he never really recovered.

Show me a side with a perfect transfer record, we've had a huge amount of churn accommodating our rise.

To be fair to Ahadme, he had an excellent game against our centre halves for Burton just before he signed, and he was still relatively young, despite not meeting the grade at Pompey. One of those that turned out to be playing at his level, rather than having potential.

I think k Town coukd sign the best 11 players in the world and we'd still struggle as we currently do simply because McKenna will not adapt and change his approach ( formation). He insists of making players conform to his tactics rather than play players to their strengths and in their best/ most effective position, and in the best combinations, but he will not change
Our opponents know hiw we are going to play because McKenna never changes, even when its clearly not working. How many more games are we going to be overrun or outnumbered in midfield before he changes his formation?

Little wonder our forward line us so ineffective when it gets bu gger all service, or our defence is back peddling because the MF is steamrollered!

The manager is in danger of coming across as a one trick pony. He needs to learn, adapt change. I just cant believe a deep thinker like him isn't reflecting on the last 12 months and trying something else.

Thing is, our recruitment based on stats, doesn't appear to be going well compared to what you can assume prior was actually watching and researching players or managing them before

If you look at recent high stat signings, they aren't pulling up trees for us as yet
Sammy S, Jack Clarke, Muric as you mention, ( But then we were missing Brightons data.. did we simply look at champ stats and try for the best players? )

When we recruited the likes of broady, Davis etc, their stats weren;t amazing, but they had talent that could work with km's football, not many signings since look to fit KM's football which for me is a bizarre strategy. Oshea is a solid signing, but when think of KM football does he suit it? same with greaves, same with palmer really. All high stat players in certain areas but not really players who i feel are km players.

a niche perspective

You've never liked McKenna, have you? I mean 2 promotions in 2 seasons suggests he has more than a clue about what he's doing but I'm sure also appreciates your advice and insight.

Agree wholeheartedly with this post. I am really confused by McKenna at the moment. One of those that thought he was initially brilliant (especially when compared to all those “managers” that followed Magilton), but his inflexibility is becoming a problem, and I’m also starting to doubt his man management skills.

we could turn a profit on 3 of those (though i'll believe it when i see it for aro!), so if they're the worst, then we're doing pretty well!

Dont look at Alex Fergusons or Wengers list od signings then! Many, many that didnt work out at Man u ir Arsenal. No one gets them all right. Nothing unusual.

Well, you couldnt be more wrong there. I think hes an outstanding young manager. But I'm just perplexed that he doesnt change and adapt.

There seems to be a problem with so many people on here that its seen as a crime to ask or pose questions and challenge things instead of following blindly.
