If I was Woolfenden and received that remark from Ashton or McKenna I'd ask what my role is, exactly. To sit on my backside in case O'Shea picks up an injury or suspension? Fine for someone who has always been a reserve, or brought into the club with full knowledge of the competition, but a first teamer who has subsequently been dropped? Much tougher.

What exactly can we do? He got a new contract in January. I imagine he wants to play, but I don't see many calling for O'Shea to be dropped so that Woolf can start more games and I can't see us permanently changing shape so that we can play both O'Shea and Woolf, and nor should we. I'll be gutted when he goes as I'm a big fan, and personally I wouldn't have been in a rush to replace him last year, but given where we are at, I don't really see what we can do to make him want to stay when it's clear he wants to be playing regularly.

He's contracted to the club and a very important member of the squad. He's an injury away to O'Shea from first team football. The club holds all the cards imo. We want like for like replacements in the squad so there isn't a massive drop off should they be required.

Sure, but what we want and what the player wants are different things. Woolf isn't a kid anymore, 2 years ago he was a regular starter in a team that won promotion from this league. He might have been happy making half a dozen starts in the Prem but we're not in the Prem anymore and he'll want regular football. Just telling him he's not going isn't going to make him feel any better about the situation.

The only thing would be to play him on the left ahead of Greaves. I can imagine some fans being happier with that solution. He has experience there from Lambert's League One days though never looked completely comfortable, albeit he didn't have as much experience then. McKenna tried, and generally succeeded, in selling the importance of the squad last season but it won't fly with as many players at a lower level.

Greaves cost 18M

And yet oddly enough I've been an employer for most of my working life and when I first started up took 80% f my former employer's workforce with me.

Back to the football though. We want a squad that can challenge for promotion. Not just a starting eleven.

edit. One thing I noticed during my absence was that in groups such as the Blue Monday Telegram group people can discuss their football differing opinions without the personal jibes. And it's much the better for that.

Woolfy someone we'd like to keep. Situations aren't always simple. Different people have different wishes. Most difficult summer on that front. Have had different situations with people like Burgess, Broadhead, Morsy, people who have had life-changing offers that they've deserved off their time here. Difficult as we want to keep a very strong squad together and want to keep some of those that have been here as part of it, but have to respect wishes and want people who want to be here. Always more complicated than just what we want and the player wants.

This suggest to me that McKenna was not necessarily expecting these departures, and add into the mix the Townsend injury, this has undoubtedly made the transfer window even more difficult.

A few months away from this place taught me that I had spent far too long arguing the toss with people who aren't as important in my life as my wife and family. I was also guilty of being unnecessarily personal in order to win a pointless argument with a stranger on the internet. I would have thought your year away would have given you time for similar reflection.

The Blue Monday telegram group has also shown me how people can have different opinions on football without the need to resort to personal jibes. In the time I've posted there I haven't seen one fall out.

The old Glassers would have replied to your post with something about not running a whelk stall or some other dig. I'm now into disagreeing agreeably.

People have different opinions on what happens at our beloved football club. These differences can be debated civilly.

I'll leave it there for your consideration.

Playing some because they cost more, rather than because they were/are better players/in better form, was one of the reasons we garnered so few points last season.

Must have anticipated it with Morsy surely, due to Sami's age -> inevitable diminishing of his pace?

guessing that the plan was to shift morsy into more of a club captain/sub role, but maybe wouldn't have suited morsy's character in any case?

would've been great to have his experience around the place, but not enough to deny him a life-changing move.

Yes. I didn't expect Sam to go this season but I did see his role as being used sparingly. I had hoped that he would see himself as an elder statesman in the group but the offer from the middle east was life changing for his family.

All that is very romantic, and I get it. But what I will never understand is if that club are paying him £100k a week, why the fck we didn’t ask for a few hundred quid as a transfer fee.
Absolutely baffles me.

We owe that club nothing, and we are a business, to just see him go on his merry way seems a terrible bit of business from the club.

I'm guessing it's a sort of thank you for all Morsy has done, to not put up any barrier. A goodwill gesture. Not everything has to be about cold hard cash!
