Up until yesterday, judging from the journalist on Twitter (Farzam Abolhosseini), seems like the deal is progressing well and all very positive. Looking at the timelines of the deal it still seems most likely to me we are trying to sign both, as seems unlikely that a deal could have fallen through in a day for Egeli, and similarly unlikely that our interest in McAteer started in the last 24 hours and the deal done and dusted in that time.

This is what people seem to miss. He played as a striker for his whole youth career and scored loads of goals. Certainly got the physical attributes to play as a 9 for us in our system. | | | |

I actually see McAteer (although I totally appreciate predominantly plays on the right) as more of a Broadhead replacement.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we were still in for Egeli.
Both are incredibly versatile and we’re getting too caught up on the sides they usually play. Egeli played up top for a long time, doesn’t add to the squad numbers because of his age and fits the model in terms of incomings. There is still a lot of cash available and loads of irons in the fire. |  | | |

If we sign Egeli permanently I don' think he will count in the 25 man squad due to his age. Maybe there is a view that we want to give him half a season to settle in (like with Omari) and therefore signing McAteer helps with that, particularly as Burns is getting back to fitness as well?
There may be a certain amount of hedging our bets - if Egeli is not an absolute certain, then better to get a good deal done now rather than leave all of our remaining business to the last week. | | | |

Burns isn't due back until November & after the injury he had, is unlikely to be match fit until December, so I wouldn't rule out us not registering him until he is full ready in January. We don't really have the luxury of being able to carry a squad place, by choice, for a likely 3 months.
Last time we were in the Championship, McKenna nearly always changed his entire front 4 in the second half of matches, which requires 6 'attackers' to play behind the centre forward per game (3 starters & 3 finishers); with injuries & suspensions, that'll require at least 8 players in his 25 man squad (+ u21 non loans) to compete for those 3 spots - there will of course be options for versatile players like Taylor, Akpom or Johnson to cover in that area too of course.
But on that basis, noting the loss of Hutchinson & Broadhead, we are definitely still going to be looking for further arrivals as we are well short of McKenna's requirements.
If the Celtic link to Ogbene proves to have substance, we still have a lot of work to do over the next week. | | | |

I can actually see him playing as a 9 too. I think we are finally having the option to mix it up a little bit more. It looks like we have many options with the front thinking players. Excited for tomorrow now.

Morsy will be 34 next month & with 1 year left on his contract, he would have had very limited transfer value so we weren't leaving much on the table by letting him go for free. The issue is whether we could have got another year out of him, or whether our midfield replacements will be his equal or better. Not getting Hackney may be a big disappointment. |  |
