Has anyone got some video of the penalty.. looked soft when I watched it live on 18:06 - Aug 24 by The_Flashing_Smile | The pen enabled them to change tactic, sit back and low block though. I'm not denying we had lots of time to recover, but it was a huge factor given it changed their tactics and made it a lot harder for us to score. Without the pen the game would probably have been more open, and we may well have gone on to win. |
Respectfully disagree. We had 15 shots to their 2; we have almost 73% possession. We didn't lose this game because of a soft penalty; we lost this game because we were unable to capitalise on our dominance. It was on us rather than on them; we should have been out in front by the end.

Thats just not true. We lost it because of both. But for the pen we would probably not have lost. But for our inability to crack open a deep 10 man defence, we would not have lost.

Has anyone got some video of the penalty.. looked soft when I watched it live on 18:25 - Aug 24 by GlasgowBlue | I think it's very relevant. 8 of our starting line up were regular Premier League starters for us. We used 14 players who have premier league experience against a team which just three months ago went into their last game of the season facing relegation to League One. Penalty or not, our team should have ben more than capable of getting points from that game yesterday. |
You seem to be missing the point more since your return, I don't know whether intentially or not. If we take our last Prem starting line-up, only 5 of those started v Preston: Walton, Davis, Morsy (C) (Luongo 88’), Chaplin (J. Clarke 70’), Cajuste (Taylor 78’), Hutchinson, Greaves, O’Shea, Hirst (Delap 70'), Broadhead (Szmodics 78’), Tuanzebe. You'd say Palmer would usually start, so I see 6. Don't know where you're getting 8 from. Regardless, it shows the team's changed a fair bit... so it's unsurprising we'd start slowly. If you just take Delap, Hutchinson, Morsy and Tuanzebe - that's not just a huge amount of quality being removed, but a huge amout of cohesiveness. Players who know how the team plays. So the first point you've missed is our team has been gutted, not fully replaced yet, and those we have brought in have not had long with their new team. Preston, you say, are a team who nearly went down. Well, as I said, they've started well - undefeated, 2 wins and a draw. Also, only 4 of their starters yesterday were starters in their last game of last season, so they've massively changed that struggling team. So your point that it's a team who nearly went down doesn't quite work. It's a different team, and seemingly an improved one given their results. Finally, whilst we probably should have been more than capable of getting points from that game yesterday, as stated, the pen made it a lot harder as it enabled them to sit back, employ the low block, and stifle the game. Another point you've seemingly missed. Yes you'd like to think we'd do better, but when you apply all the context (mentioned above), the result isn't hugely surprising.

Palmer, Davis, Greaves, O'Shea, Johnson, Philogene*, Clarke & Szmodics* were regular starters. That's my 8. Hirst stared the last few games when we knew Delp was off and probably would have made quite a few more if he wasn't injured pre season and after the Spurs game. Add in our subs: Chaplin, Young, McAteer, Cajuste. Plenty of Premier League experience there. More than enough to see off a team that missed relegation to League One by one point on the last day of the season. Rather than bat this one back and forwards let's agree to disagree. *When not injured.

Right, so you're including two who barely played due to being injured. Bit disingenuous? I also included Hirst. No, let's not add in subs when you said "Starters". And you've swerved the points about Preston. I can see why you'd rather agree to disagree.

I really wasn't going to do this and after this post I'm out, but Szmodics (one of the injured players) was our second highest Premier League goal scorer and a regular starter before being injured. Philogene, the other inured player, played in the Premier League (and Champions League) for Villa before joining us and was a regular starter for us after he joined, scoring our two goals at Old Trafford, before he got injured. So hardly disingenuous. As for using subs, if you had read my op that you replied to I clearly stated 8 starters and We used 14 players who have premier league experience against a team which just three months ago went into their last game of the season facing relegation to League One. So the subs were in the 14 we used. I'd rather agree to disagree than spend my Sunday evening repeating myself over what will most likely be ten pages. If you want to claim the win then you can have that one me. It's really unimportant in the scheme of things. [Post edited 24 Aug 21:35]

They definitely made it harder for us after the goal, but for that one bad decision to define the game after the possession and shots that we had really isn't right. We should have put it away

I also don't think they would have played much different if it was 0-0. Their aim would still have been to snatch something from a set piece.

"Regular starter" Szmodics actually had just 10 starts out of the 38. I'll let others decide if that constitutes a regular starter. Your other "regular starter" Philogene had 7 starts. Playing for Villa doesn't really help the cohesion of the Ipswich team. I'll accept your point on the subs. You've still swerved the points about Preston.

It was a no brainer to play Ashley Young yesterday. We had to stop the crosses coming in and defending isn't Johnson's strong point. |
Does he have any strong point? The most experienced PL player we have he’s been a real let down

Think the toss can be argued on Philogene but it’s fairly obvious that Szmodics was a regular starter when fit, and if 10+ games isn’t enough time to get up to speed how much of this season are we writing off to allow new signings to contribute? You do also realise Preston had 5 new signings starting yesterday, yeah? [Post edited 25 Aug 7:02]

When did they sign though? I'm guessing they're shopping in a different market to us, were able to get their players in earlier (because they're not so sought after) and have had more time training together than ours have. You need to read more carefully, I've already mentioned how Preston have massively changed their team - which merely backs up my point that they're not the same relegation-threatened team of last season. "when fit". That's the other point though. He was very often not fit, hence he only started 10 games. I also wasn't making a point that he wasn't up to speed. You seem to have seen my name (again) and gone steaming in without engaging your brain.

Indeed, we went 1-0 down with 80 minutes left to play & managed just 2 shots on target in the game. This isn't a one-off; Town have managed a grand total of 4 shots on target in our 3 League games this season. This isn't just bad luck or bad finishing - it's a clear sign that we aren't making many chances. At least McKenna was honest enough to admit after Saturday's game that what we are doing isn't working & that the balance of the attack & the team isn't right. We will all have our own ideas about what's wrong, but he has a week on the training ground to try to fix it & it isn't just time for the new players to settle in. I would expect some changes of personnel or shape for Saturday's game against Derby.

We've lost our inspirational captain - a player who would lift the team and pull them up the pitch. With Morsy still here we'd have more points from these opening games. Then we have Delap and Omari - our star striker and most creative player - gone. Then we have Tuanzebe - arguably our best defender - gone. Burns still out, Ogbene coming back from injured, Broady gone. We've also not finished replacing these, or we have players not up to speed with McKennaball. The spine has been ripped out and we're 'making do' at the moment. I could go on. These are the reasons we're not firing and clicking yet.

Tuanzebe started only 6 more games last season than the player that started at RB for us on Saturday. 3 of the others listed started less games than Szmodics who by your own definition was not a regular. Delap’s role has been replaced by Hirst who has been at the club for 3 years and played 85 games for us Morsy and Omari are obviously big losses but most teams at this level have to deal with turnover, it’s the nature of the division, as illustrated by Saturdays opposition having more new players than us

Has anyone got some video of the penalty.. looked soft when I watched it live on 18:09 - Aug 24 by The_Flashing_Smile | Last season is irrelevant. They've started well this, and our team has been gutted/seen new players come in who either aren't up to speed (literally) and/or are not up to speed with the rest of the team/Kieran's tactics. Yes our attackers didn't do their job, but their job would've been a hell of a lot easier without the dodgy pen and subsequent low block spoiling tactics. |
Last season is irrelevant That's not what fans were saying when talking about mckenna credit. He's still getting that based on what we did 2 seasons ago. ( btw not disagreeing with that. Just saying past seasons are seen as relevant) [Post edited 25 Aug 9:09]

6 games more is a considerable amount more, and I think most agree we looked better with him in the team (and didn't want him to leave). The 3 you mention that I listed were just asides to the main point. Saturday's opposition didn't lose their captain. They lost the players that nearly got them relegated and have brought it better ones. I doubt another team in this division has had the turnover of important players that we have. McKenna himself has said it has been more than he expected or wanted. We could do this dance all day but it's a bank holiday and I have better things to do with my time. Let's chat again in a few weeks when the window's shut and the new team we're building has had time to gel.

Let's take the blue specs off just for a moment shall we?
