Yeah, but there's loads of factors at play. We might've been happy to roll with what we had until he became available, we might've wanted to keep our powder dry in the hope we needed £15m for a CM addition in Hackney, but only spent half of it on an alternative, who knows.

He's a solid pick up. Davis - Greaves - O'Shea remains 3 of the back 4. Its good to have competition at right back as Johnson is really hit & miss. Their versatility also covers the left. My only issue is it feels a bit punchy at £3.5m but I'm not too bothered about that.

I disagree with your title.

If you analyse it critically, I think you'd arrived at the conclusion that it is a mixed / hybrid approach. Some are, as you say, short-term signings with a view to get promoted and then replace them, whilst some are clearly with a view to be part of a PL 'squad'. If we do get promoted, we'll need some new faces for the starting 11, many of this season's starting 11 will drop to the bench, and this year's bench will move out.

Your last sentence seems pertinent, same could be said of the McAter signing. When that was first speculated most thought £5m fair enough, then when £11.5 was announced there was a collective wtf.

Which exactly the issue we had last year, and the issue newly promoted teams to the Premier League tend to have season after season. Too much churn and change. One of the reasons why we did so well in 2023/24 is because we had a settled team who knew each other's roles.

I am still absolutely baffled that we dropped 12million quid on Kasey Mcateer if I am honest. Not sure he fits in to wither of those brackets personally.

Still time in the window. Hoping for a couple of marquee additions in attacking positions. Squad will be looking good if so.

Prices seem to have taken another up-turn across the board. Plus I'd not be surprised if we are being squeezed a bit as having (and being willing to spend) more money than most of the rest of the division.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I don't see that we did that last summer. We recruited top Championship players rather than clearly PL ready players (with the exception of Cajuste and Phillips). Even Omari was 'potential' rather than ready.

I understand your point about a settled team, but in reality is any settled group of Championship players ever going to be able to compete in the PL now? The gap is a chasm.

Agreed. Furlong replacing Johnson is pretty meh.

Johnson is good enough to get us promoted for the Championship.

Furlong isn’t good enough to play for us in the Premier League.

More turnover, with no significant or long-term upgrade.

Johnson is just plain better than Furlong, but we do need cover. I'd have just thought there was better out there or exciting development options available to us. This definitely feels like the worst of the transfers so far, and a bit desperation stations.

On the evidence of the first three games where Johnson has been a complete non factor, I'm not sure there is a strong case to say he's better for what we need there.

Maybe the simple reality is that we need a more physical, defensively minded fullback in the mould of Axel.

I wouldn't call it desperation at all. Starting RB and captain of a team that has continually fished Championship top half.

Adds leadership, championship know how, physicality, a presence at set pieces, better defensive qualities than Johnson and adds a decent long throw option.

I hear Nunez doesn't speak English either - so looks like we have dropped that requirement as well.

Maybe that's why teams yo yo,
Can't get a foot hold in the prem,
Build a team to get up,
That's not good enough to stay,
Start again build a team in the prem but can only spends so much money rinse repeat,

The Furlong link is the clearest signal yet that we've shifted to a more short-term strategy. It also doesn't reflect particularly well on last summer's business.

Furlong is a pragmatic move to cover Townsend’s season ending injury isn’t it?

We’d never get anyone here to take on Davis

Even more so when Tom Fellows moving for less than the fee we've paid for McAteer. If a competent scouting network were to be doing their job well, you could surely pick someone up with just as much talent for a fraction of the price.

Or maybe like last year he’s realised Johnson is up to the level and we need to do something different.

Spoken to a good mate of mine who's a West Brom fanatic, he reckons Furlong is decent enough and very good at the dark arts. But is baffled why we haven't gone for Fellows who is quality.
