Didn’t realize for their Pen until I’ve watched it back 23:22 - Aug 30 with 2377 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Just how badly Palmer is in no man’s land! As poor as it is that the runner had that much space, Davis is covering and it would have been probably a decent but difficult chance rather than a clear 1:1.

Ugh every goal conceded this year we’ve played such a major a part in and usually not just one player either!

I might be too harsh, but I think the second goal as well, he didn't do that well. His footwork lets him down before he goes to dive low for it so when he did dive it was sub-optimal at best. O'Shea should never have gone to chest it though, let alone lose the ball that easily shortly after.

Every goal conceded has been really poor and had errors from multiple players.

It's just a continuation of last season, and not a real surprise, as 3 of the back 4 and the keeper are the same players that were making these errors then. Their confidence is shot. We need a couple of wins, and fairly sharpish, to get this monkey off our backs.

A stronger midfield would help, morsy and luongo dug us out of a lot of trouble at times. I hope Nunez stays fit, I think him and cajuste could form a decent partnership.

Matusiwa didn't have his best game yesterday but, if McKenna sticks with a midfield two, I don't think we can write him off yet.

….but Palmer just never looks like he’s gonna make anything other than the most basic of saves.

Certainly not a save that is going to “surprise” you anyway.

Any one on one he faces is basically a goal, as is any shot vaguely in the corners.

He’s just a bang average goalminder at the very best.

This is obviously just my opinion, other opinions are available.

Sir Alex always said, if you analyse every goal conceded, it contains an error by the defending team - thats football.

He also continued that comment and said, but the team scoring will always view it as great football - thats football.

for all the riches we have and multi million pound players in so may areas, we don't have a single keeper that is decent. Nothing would please me more than to see a good keeper come in on deadline day.

He's basically the same as Walton. Solid enough, but does nothing remarkable.

That point about shots in the corner, or pretty much any shot on the ground, definitely applies to him and Walton.

Agree. Every successful promoted team has not a good, but a great goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Palmer isn't that far up the scale. I mean, these two penalties we conceded. I never thought for one second that he would possibly make the save.

….be difficult to have an argument about which of them is the worse keeper.

Neither of them have any part of their game that you could consider to be strong.

Of our last 4 keepers, I’d probably say that the only areas of strength that we’ve had have been Muric’s ability to deal with crosses and Hladky’s distribution. But Muric’s positive was outweighed by his high “cock-up potential”.

On that basis Hladky was our best recent keeper based purely on his decent distribution ability and the mediocrity of the rest of his game.

As noted by others, it’s really not been a position that the management/recruitment team have excelled in during the good times, despite the riches at our disposal.

Hladky had a stature and alertness too, he always looked ready for action, whereas the other three looked ready for reaction and that can translate into nervousness. That being said he wasn't even on the bench for Burnley yesterday.

I agree with your OP, however, point of order- the vast majority of all goals in football are due to ‘errors’

Look, we need to make do with a steady, experienced, mid-table championship level keeper. We’ve never had millions to spend on a keeper. I’m sure if we did we’d invest it wisely. Anyway, all the best teams, especially those who like to play out from the back, make do with an adequate keeper - Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal. You’ve only got to look at Man U now or Spurs last season to realise how unimportant it is to have a top level goalie.

Presumably so did the ref otherwise Leif was going for an early bath - which is what the TalkSport commentary team thought was about to happen.

While I don't disagree that Palmer is just an ok keeper, Leeds had an absolutely honking goalkeeper last season and got promoted despite him. The exact opposite of Burnley who were promoted because of their keeper.

This is certainly not going to happen.

But the GK department is just another example of what we've seen in all areas of the pitch in the last 15 months. Lots of money spent, for no tangible improvement, and in many cases obvious weakening.

Is Palmer better than Hladky was in the promotion season? Is Greaves better than Burgess was? You can carry on like that pretty much all over the pitch.

The departure of Muric constitutes an admission that his recruitment was an expensive failure. And he was far from being the only one. We need massive, rapid, improvement or else proper accountability.

Absolutely agree and he started coming to take the ball off Palmer more yesterday, some lovely turns, thought we bossed the midfield for a change this season. The pairing works! It was our absolute lack of creativity that killed it for us..

And a few seasons ago Burnley had Muric.

Think Palmer is plenty good enough in the traditional aspects of a goalkeeper but he isn't great with the ball at his feet. Chaplin was on from goal kicks all day yesterday with nobody around him but he doesn't have the vision or ability to find him.

In all honesty Hladky's ability with his feet was a key reason for us splitting defences open 2 years ago and he's just another to add to the list of players we've replaced with other players who aren't as good / don't suit how we play.

Both goals were soft as sh1t. We’d got ourselves into a really good position at half time, failed to get a 2nd though when we had some decent chances (O’Shea has to score that header at the back post) and gifted them 2 absolutely honking goals. So frustrating.

He could have come out further, due to the covering defenders, and I feel that he is too far to his right as the shot comes in.

If I am being honest I would put peak Shane Supple comfortably above him, and Bart a clear division above.

We could have had the lad from Plymouth, who is now at Sheffield United, Michael Cooper...
