This 'Raise the Colours' movement... on 12:22 - Sep 5 by DJR | We're doomed! On my way into Tunbridge Wells this morning, I came across about a dozen England flags on lamp posts on a half-mile stretch of one of the main roads. Tunbridge Wells was one of the few places which was neither a city or university town and which voted to Remain. But flags at half-mast? What's that all about? It suggests to me to that someone important has died. And why England flags? Do these people not think that the Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish are British? [Post edited 5 Sep 12:23]

This will blow your mind but living north of the border I see far more flags of Scotland than I do of the Union.

Touche! Having said that, I would maintain that the current trend of raising flags in England is tied to something that is different to the various reasons why Scottish flags have been common in Scotland for a long time. You of course may disagree. [Post edited 5 Sep 12:40]

Sadly for me, there appear to be some people in Scotland using its flag in the same way that people in England have been using flags recently. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/sep/06/reclaim-our-flag-saltire-cultura

We have Union flags on many too. All at half mast. Either they pre-empted the Duchess of Kent's death or it was as high as they could get them. I did wonder whether they could have been celebrating the Tour of Britain but I guess they aren't. I am amazed no one has made a mint from taking them down to re-sell.

Found out an interesting fact about the Duchess of Kent over the weekend. After retiring from her Royal duties she spent 13 years as a music teacher in a Hull primary school and no one except the Head knew who she was.

I had heard the teaching part but not that others didn't know who she was.

When I visited Ireland I had the same mixed reactions that I have of it here. It is impressive the patriotism involved but sad the violent nationalism and all the history that lies behind it too.

This 'Raise the Colours' movement... on 20:48 - Sep 7 with 717 views | Whos_blue | I drove down from Cambridgeshire to Devon today and saw a fair few flags on the bridges on the way down. They looked sh1te. Nothing remotely patriotic about them at all. They looked cheap and tacky and when they are faded and weathered will look even worse. Some of the St George flags had messages scrawled on them. You couldn't read them but they looked parricularly sh1ite. Nothing shouts patriotism more than a cheap flag with some inane sh1te scrawled all over it. Well done to all involved.

In Wales too unfortunately. The anti-foreigner protests around here have had more than their fair share of Welsh flags. It’s a new one on me. Maybe Welsh racists have always used their flag but I’ve not seen it before. They’re not the brightest though, so copycat approaches mirroring what’s happening in England are to be expected.

I heard that too. Isn’t it amazing? The version I heard mentioned she worked at more than one school, but whatever the fine detail that’s an amazing and refreshing story.

3 George crosses and 3 Union Jacks to date, we find it more of a statement to just slice them down the middle and let them hang rather than to simply cut them off. Edit ....sorry to spoil your fun as I know you get off on seeing them xx [Post edited 7 Sep 21:45]

You're full of crap. The ones hung up round my way are way up lamp-posts and have clearly been hung by teams of people with ladders so unless you're going round with a set of ladders in your pocket too then you're talking bollox. Also, nobody is hanging union jacks I've only seen George crosses. That's the campaign- to hang George crosses. [Post edited 7 Sep 21:53]

The odd thing is that nationality and immigration policy are determined on a UK-wide basis, so really it's only the Union Jack people should be using to show their Britishness and to sock it those that are not, or are not sufficiently, British. [Post edited 7 Sep 22:16]

Extending tree loppers would be much quicker than a ladder. I've got a set that would reach any of the flags I've seen up lamp posts.

This 'Raise the Colours' movement... on 22:30 - Aug 31 by bluelagos | Why be personally ashamed? Like say us electing someone you dont like or having laws you dislike? Be embarrassed but ashamed? Surely you should only be ashamed of something you yourself have done? |
Fine, but by contrast, what have people got to be 'proud' of, if it wasn't them who did it? I'm proud of some stuff I've done in my life (and ashamed of plenty more...!), but why should I be 'proud' of anything my country has done?

Are you proud that Town won the trophies they have won? If you have children, are you ever proud of anything they do? Pride can come from a sense of affiliation or belonging. That isn't unusual.
