One thing I think has changed is that the use of England flags in connection with the England football team no longer has the same racist tones that it had forty odd years ago.
I am not an England fan but living in London I went to quite a few England games at Wembley after work back in the 80s.
That was at the height of football hooliganism and to attend an England game in those days was in my view like attending a National Front rally. [Post edited 8 Sep 8:39]

Yeah actually it is usually the England flag, but I do get the OP, and it's a shame as well. Lady Dollers has commented when we've driven past a house displaying either the England flag or Union Jack that they're probably racist. Which I push back on, but I can understand why she (and the OP) might think it.
You say "Any meaning is projected on to it," but that's the whole point, isn't it? Flags are symbolic and hugely filled with meaning (good and bad). Whenever we see Ukraine flags in people's windows we tend to think the opposite of when we see England flags, and yet on the face of it they're just flags of different countries. | |

The village next to me, Manorhamilton is the first real village you come to after crossing the border into Ireland in the West.
It's been completely decked out in the Irish Tricolour and the Palastine flag from the beginning of the year.. I have no issue with either cause, but I just don't see the need for it.

Perhaps if we had a government that worked for us rather than the Unions and wasn't torn between satisfying the left and the right there would be no need for people to take to the streets and use the Union Jack and flag of St. George as some sort of protest against our country being ruined.
I have no time for far right, far left or whatever. They are destroying peaceful protests.
But whatever goes on sadly you will always have people that use the situation to their advantage.
There should be no questions asked if a person wishes to raise the flag. But because of reasons I have just pointed out it will now be seen in some quarters as racist. Which in turn gives those with an agenda to destroy our culture even more excuses. | | | |

If I were to quote Max Boyce, I could say "I know .... because I was there." when it comes to Wembley in the 1980s.
But don't take my word for it, just look at the photo of England fans at the 1980 Euros to indicate the use of the England flag at games. However, as I acknowledged, this is not to say that Union Jacks were not also on display at the games I attended.

Your welcome to try walking through the high street with a Rangers or England shirt on, but I really wouldn't advise it. I doubt tourists ( especially from the UK) would feel tempted to pop into any of the pubs in the village. Because at the very least the message is far from welcoming.

Depends on the context innit. If its a Devon village hall full of biddies its probably alright, if its a pub with a flat roof and some bulldogs chained up outside you're almost certainly in EDL territory.
FWIW I've never really felt the need to wave a flag outside my house and that's not likely to change any time soon. Can't say I would actively not do it because some bell ends have different opinions to me though, they've not 'claimed' anything.

Exactly. And the context of waving/flying the flag recently has been 'let's go and intimidate some asylum seekers', so the timing around a load of these popping up in various places is a bit, well, 'sus', isn't it. Nothing wrong with flying the flag per se, obviously. Just need to wonder what the motivation is in a lot of cases. Several have been cable tied up lamp posts in the centre of my village in the last few days, near (but not the actual same place) where we usually have seasonal displays like Remembrance Day, Christmas, Easter, have had ones Olympics and Euros based etc. The 'normal' use of the flag for these displays, well I wouldn't bat an eyelid, but these recent ones? Definitely have to wonder what the underlying motivation is behind it. And that is a sad state of affairs. | | | |

My new aged-footy team mate is Irish and had a bit of a (jokey) problem with passing to our centre forward who was wearing an England shirt in training. The Irishman helped us win only a second game in 3 years on saturday (he was a rock in midfield), so he can stay and the England shirt wearer can do one! priorities innit. |  |
