Passing around the back 20:36 - Sep 12 with 796 viewsHackneyblueboy

My god do our centre halfs and Palmer not look comfortable doing that. Obviously they are being coached to do it but if we wanted to play that way surely Woolfy should have stayed.

Painful, isn’t it? An accident waiting to happen. Palmer looks so casual.

For me it's the pass into Cajuste/Matusiwa who don't seem to have that same ability (or perhaps confidence to turn and break that Morsy did.

Hence we keep playing it between centre backs so much,

It's slow, ponderous and nervy. It's going to cost us many times this season, if we continue to play this way, with the back four and keeper we have.

We look awful defensively.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Woolf far better at it. And Morsy a much better option dropping in for the central lay off.

Not as bad as the commentators ar emaking out though. In control. Safe. Not coming off, but when it does we will have overload through the middle.

Not as if the ball is sticking from long punts.

True. Cajuste does look a step ahead at this level though. Him and Furlong the positives for me. We look disjointed.

I disagree.

I think they are looking better at it as the half is going on, and you can see the thinking.

Every goal kick is worked to O’Shea and Furlong who switch it to the left. They are trying hard to expose Philogene and Davis against the two on their side, and I think it is smart. They are our main attacking threat

Tbh i quite like it.

Can't become good at it without doing it

Burgess wasn't great at it when he came in but he got better as it became part of his job.

Oshea and greaves are fine. Furlong OK. Not really having many options to pass to. Sheff utd man marking of our pivot has been excellent imo.

As the half got on, Cajuste was doing it more often which is good to see.

They do not look comfortable at all.

Hence why a lot of the time we just end up passing it a bit then long ball it.

Definitely feels like something is missing compared to when we were playing this way two seasons ago, think there's more to it than the GK and centre-backs. Does not make for comfortable viewing

Furlong is looking ok. More mobile than the others. Davis putting some good crosses over and playing it simple at the back. Just waiting for the obligatory Greaves faux pas.

Fk me. Wolfs gone. Morsy gone

Holland was good at it. So was gardsoe and magilton and berra.

Davis has been excellent but that's because he can get forward.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

True.

Plus there needs to be some recognition that Sheffield are pushing high centrally to put that pressure on the pivot and it means the full backs are available. Just need to be a bit more consistent at getting it up the wing successfully more.

No options centrally so has to go wide, seems to work on the left but Furlong and Macateer not linking at all.

The only Muff in Town.

I’m not some dinosaur against playing it out from the back but I do question the risk/reward of the way we do it.

Often seems that, even if we get the risky triangles right, we end up back where we started anyway.

I understand the premise of drawing them in and then springing but we don’t seem to do the springing part.

But it hasnt.

And lumping it comes straight back off a sheffield head creating a dangerous transition.

You are right - but that said Palmer is so far off the level we need from a GK.

From the goal kicks?

No I haven’t tbh but I’ll take your word for it. McKenna wouldn’t have us doing it if it didn’t work but I just don’t see it.

2 examples straight after half time. First one Greeves could of taken a bad knock then same for Matusiwa.
