Greaves a calamity defender 18:43 - Sep 20 with 9458 viewsonceablue

Can’t read the game and therefore always making desperate tackles and headers.

What did we pay for him.

Burgess such a better all round player

Right, it’s not under 9s football FFS, no one is actively booing him in the stands are they, they’re commenting on a message board. He needs to step up! Went for huge money had some PL experience and hasn't look assured stepping back down a division, to a level he should be excelling at.

It's backed up by the stats. Had a MOTM performance at Derby and has been the better of the two CBs in most games.

Constructive comment though.

Being the better of the two CB (which itself is arguable but also not exactly a high bar) doesn’t equate to being the most consistently good player in the squad. Of the 4 CB’s we had last season it’s slightly mad to me that the two best ones aren’t here anymore.

He's just turn 25. BH es already better than Burgess but certainly doesn't have the maturity of Burgess yet.

Burgess amhad an absolutely torrid time when he first joined. He was considered a poor buy by just as many fans (at £750k) as Greaves is now. Almost like CBs need a bit of time to form partnerships, mature and find there best form in a team.

He's more than proven at this level. He is a championship team of the year player and was outstanding for Hull.

A quality player in the making if not the complete article yet.

I tell you what night help him.....a bit of support.

As someone said on another thread recently though, there comes a time when we should be sticking with the quality we have spent time & money developing, instead of immediately moving them on and replacing them with another 'to be developed but still raw' player.

If we want promotion again, we need points & players capable of helping us get those points for *now*, not for some hypothetical future position which with this 'business model' (I assume that's the rationale behind it) we might never achieve going along this path.

Again however, Burgess wasn't better when he first came in, he got better

If the red card doesn't happen today, no one would be moaning about greaves, he was solid up until that point.

To many wanting players to fail because they lost a favourite imo, same reason why oshea still gets moaned about despite being one of the leagues best cbs.

I love this kind of comments - "if you just ignore the things he did wrong then he had a really good game”

I’m well in the minority but I thought he was playing ok up until his sending off…O’Shea on the other hand looked his ponderous self…we really haven’t sorted out our play out from the back system yet have we?….nearly always a heart in the mouth sketch when they are fannying around at goal kicks etc….

Greaves should never have been out in that position.

When any defender is left like that rarely do they come out on top, striker got ahead, cuts across, ‘wins’ the foul. It’s easy for them.

Greaves was fine up until that point but let’s slate him shall we? Ffs.

Hyperbole. He is suspect under a long ball but otherwise sound. Why don’t we give him and the coaching team a chance. There headlines are boring.

I don't disagree that he has been playing well but he always seems to have a mad moment in each game that costs us

Is that not perhaps the risk however with what KM is asking of him?

We've seen him at times playing as a defender making his way up to 10 position,

Like Palmer said, there will be things that will look bad, but it's what is asked of us ( something like that)

You play a highline defensively you are risking a long ball over the top, Greaves or Burgess in that position yesturday, I don't see Burgess doing anything different personally.

Greaves got caught the wrong side of his man and was slow to react. No-one's asked to play like that!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It easy to say greaves was caught the wrong side slow to react. But again we are away from home and in that moment our backline are incredibly high up the pitch where one ball over the top causes you issues. That's obviously an instruction. That's fine that's what KM wants. But it comes with risk.

You could argue why pull the guy down, surely better to risk conceding a goal & keep 11 men on the pitch

Assuming his ban stands, I think Greaves will have a job on his hands displacing Kipre once he's back.

Let's let Kipre have a full game before we start proclaiming him the new messiah! But yes, I hope you're right. Greaves has made as many mistakes for me as Muric did before getting a 'rest'.

I'm caught between thinking he's pulled him down because hes lost him. Or he's simply holding onto him because greaves himself was falling. We won't know unless he talks of it really. But hes lost his footing to begin with that didn't help the situation. Is that the pitch. Was it an accidental collision with the strikers tailing foot I'm unsure but imo we shouldn't really put our defenders under pressure in such a way that 1 hoof up the pitch results in that issue. I mean having your defenders facing your own goal just inside your own half that can't be sensible can it?

Surely you aren’t really saying ANY defender will let a forward in on goal and not try and stop him?
If Greaves had of done that then the narrative would have been he should have taken one for the team and he would still have got dogs abuse on here !Can’t win can he?

The real case for me is, if you make 1 mistake don't compound it with getting sent off. If we paid a lot of money for you, you need to show quality by being more canny than that ,it makes you look stupid getting sent off. Let it go the keeper may save or player may have a bad touch.

We conceded 57 goals in the promotion season, had to score 90+ to go up. We were very open at the back - hence all the 4-3/3-2 type games. An urban myth is developing that we had some sort of watertight defence back then.

I dont think he's made a mistake though

when you watch it back, Oshea wins the header but is now out of position himsef, the blackburn player then hoofs it, greaves and the blackburn player both start running the exact same time, the blackburn player runs into the path of greaves who slips/trips and we know the fall out..

I still dont see where the actual mistake is from greaves from a defensive point of view.

This - history rewriting itself for many on here, players generally seem to always get better for not playing.
