Ref yesterday 14:01 - Sep 21 with 7365 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | I’ve been fairly vocal about controlling what you can control and stop moaning when we lose about officials. However, I thought yesterday, he was one of the worst I’ve ever seen, giving fouls that were not free kicks which very much encouraged Cantwell to play his “style” even more. Not sure Hirsts booking was a free kick and that’s not being a 90s kid, it was just a decent tackle wasn’t it? He gave a foul against Matisuwa looking right at it when there was basically no contact. Could not wait to flash the cards. I’m sure we got the odd one for minimal contact on Philogene as well but overall we got the worst of it. Would have to see the Pen again. Greaves was a clear red so not annoyed with that just the general way we went about the game. I give credit for some refs at least trying to allow the game to flow even if they make some errors but this guy was an utter joke. Even though Sheffield United at home was and easy game to referee you could tell that guy had actually played professional football, he was decent. Yesterday not so much.

Ref yesterday on 14:39 - Sep 21 by Dyland | Was that Barnsley game also when the ref pranced ostentatiously into the box to give the oppo a penalty for a non foul that happened outside the box? The disallowed goal was after consulting with the linesman yeh? If that had been at Hillsborough the linesman would've been decapitated. |
The linesman was also a lower league referee and ha told someone some time after that he told the ref it was not offside as the ball was played by a defender, but still disallowed it. I think he must have something against us!

Though I guess the argument then would be that the ref disallowed it for something else... maybe one of our players called him a preening cock.

That Barnsley decision was so, so bad. When he blew I assumed he'd given us a pen as Harness looked like he was being fouled and I was fuming that he hadn't just let play go on and given the goal. When I saw him pointing the other way I genuinely couldn't work out what the fook he had given it for.

No, even when the lino insisted the ball was played by a defender and should only be disallowed if a Town player was standing in front of the keeper, something he could not see from the touch line. They had a long conversation and he even called the lino on to the pitch to talk to him face to face, not over the radio. It was both entertaining and frustrating that the lino stood his ground for quite some time but in the end the ref just told him he was disallowing the goal regardless of what he said. I was in the lower Cobbold with the lino directly in front of where I sat. A guy near me shouted to the lino "at least you tried" and he put his thumb up behind his back in reply.

What a comedically bad ref. Are his tats new? Not that the tats matter per se but he seems to be a bit vain.

I have no idea, but I hope we do not have him again this season.

You can see it much on the highlights, but looks like Furlong is falling over as he gets to their player, who then gets shot by a sniper.

I think it's one of those where the ref doesn't have much option but to give it. Furlong gets nowhere near the ball and makes contact with their player so it's a penalty for me. That said, I'm not sure it happens if the pitch is playable.

I don't think Furlong was even looking to make a challenge, just stepping out to play Cantwell offside and inadvertently clipped his heels. He seemed adamant that Cantwell was offside.

Yeah I saw that he was appealing hard for offside. It was all a bit keystone cops at that point. I can see why the ref gives it though and we'd expect it in our favour. Greaves did terribly for the red card but he cleary slipped when turning which didn't help, so the poor condition of the pitch offers some mitigation for yesterday's errors.

Indeed, was a penalty assuming Cantwell wasn't offside as Furlong claimed. Greaves was a bit unfortunate as he slipped as he looked to get himself back in front of the attacker and dragged him down as a result.

You’re confusing that with the game in League 1 against Wycombe.

Ref yesterday on 21:39 - Sep 21 with 1339 views | darkhorse28 | Clearest red card, penalty and game called off you’ll ever see in your life. Not an easy game to ref, but all the big decisions were 100% correct. The number of people doing anything but critically evaluate US. Especially off the pitch. Wrong type of grass next week? Referee whistle too loud? .., it’s just divisional at this point. Maybe we aren’t all that good? .., or not a £200 million spent good at least? McKenna not elite? Ashton even less so? Nah .., let’s talk about one free kick instead - standard deflection .., poor effort. I

I’ve commented on plenty of threads about our play yesterday, I even started one being critical of our center backs so spare me the BS. It was an observation on a different element of the game and officiating in general, I even said he got the big calls correct, stop trolling and grow up. [Post edited 22 Sep 2:14]

Ref yesterday on 09:09 - Sep 22 with 635 views | ThatMuhrenCross | To be honest, we've had a few shockers in recent years, so would struggle to say he was the worst. What I will say, however, is that he absolutely loved stopping the game at any opportunity and loved brandishing yellow cards even more. It does annoy me when refs are like that. Just let the game flow man!

Ref yesterday on 14:31 - Sep 21 by Dubtractor | We've had him a number of times and he has been crap every time. He was the ref for the disallowed goal at home to Barnsley a couple of years back. One of those refs where it becomes all about him, rather than letting the game flow. That Hirst tackle was forceful, but fair, and to book him fir it was a joke. All first half, if Blackburn appealed for long enough, they got the decision. Red was as clear cut as it gets, so no complaints on that. Still not seen a brilliant view of the penalty tbh, so not sure to what extent Furlong caught him as Furlong himself looked like he slipped and lost balance. |
Forgot all about that Hirst tackle, nothing wrong with it, got the ball cleanly, and I don't remember him really going through the player either. Couldn't believe it was even a foul let alone a yellow.

Ref yesterday on 14:06 - Sep 21 by FrimleyBlue | You can't have games without refs but the FA must seriously look into the standard. From non league to Prem, and even in prem now, the standard of officiating is shocking. |
What do you suggest the FA actually do? The base of the refereeing pyramid has declined hugely & obviously the larger the number, the more likely you are to have good officials at the top. A good number of new recruits join each year, but plenty of those & experienced referees drop put each year, principally as a result of the amount of abuse they get from players. In kids' games, they also get sundry abuse from parents on the touchline. We've been tolerating on field dissent for far too long & this is one of the effects. This board is a good example,of the culture, given that after most Town game, especially a defeat, there are usually sundry posts complaining about how awful the referee was.

Ref yesterday on 10:15 - Sep 22 with 537 views | RIPbobby | I think we will have to put up with this all season. It is human nature to see the unlikely winner do well. We have all the money and all the best players. People are not going to be on our side. People want the mighty to fall and will always follow the plucky triers. Refs included in this.

So how do you explain the officiating we experienced last season when we were the underdogs?

I know what he's getting at. But I think it's different in the Prem - in those cases the refs seem intimidated by the bigger clubs.

Hmm...last season, Town were victim of "big club bias" so many marginal decisions went against us. However, this season there is a "small club bias" so marginal decisions are going against us? Let's just accept that most football fans are biased and want every marginal decision to go in their team's favour. And in football, with so much down to interpretation, there are always plenty of debatable decisions.
